Should the United Arab Emirates Operate U.S. Ports?

George Bush wants to let Dubai World Ports - a company owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates - take control of 6 of the largest ports in the U.S.: New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia.

Shipping ports are already the most vulnerable part of our Homeland Security, since 95% of imported goods come by ship. Yet only 5% of cargo containers - which could easily hide WMD's - are physically inspected.

And the United Arab Emirates has some of the most dangerous ties to terrorism, according to seven U.S. Senators:

- The UAE was one of three countries in the world to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.

- The UAE has been a key transfer point for illegal shipments of nuclear components to Iran, North Korea and Lybia.

- According to the FBI, money was transferred to the 9/11 hijackers through the UAE banking system.

- Two of the 9/11 hijackers were from the UAE (Fayez Banihammad and Marwan al-Shehhi)

- After 9/11, the Treasury Department reported that the UAE was not cooperating in efforts to track down Osama Bin Laden’s bank accounts.

The $6.8 billion deal was approved by Alberto Gonzales, Condi Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, John Snow, and Michael Chertoff.

Rice said there had been a "thorough review" of the sale. "It's the considered opinion of the U.S. government that this can go forward," she said.

Do you trust the government of the United Arab Emirates to operate six of America's largest ports?

Remember over this last

Remember over this last decade and a half when Conservatives would repeat over and over again the “Liberal” name? Something like: “Liberals are doing it again.”

Well since Conservatives have taken over all the past bullshit has been made clear to voters: Conservatives stand for enormous Government interference in personal lives EXCEPT when it comes to making life better for the vast majority.

I hope we can all be disciplined enough to simply repeat the Conservative name over and over again:

The Conservatives are doing it again: Profits over security.

Profits over everything...Government over everyone.

Take some time to read about the UAE

I'm a citizen of Dubai, the UAE, and I think the majority of people posting on this page should take the time to read a bit more about the UAE, other than these random bullet points listing acknowledgement of the Taliban, two 9/11 hijackers, and the use of bank accounts in the country for terrorism funding.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding what DP World's acquisition of P&O means. It doesn't mean it will own the ports. It means it will manage P&O's terminals at some ports. P&O was previously British-owned. There are several other major ports in the USA with terminals operated by Singapore, Denmark, Japan, Hong Kong as well as some other countries. No one protested the fact that those companies are foreign, and yet the protest when they find out an Arab company is taking over.

In any case, the majority of employees of DP World in the U.S. are Americans. They are the same employees that worked for British P&O. No one is going to inject terrorists into containers. The government of the UAE is very anti-terrorist. Dubai has considerable experience in dealing with security issues. It has managed to build itself up into a very modern and tolerant city with people from more than 200 nationalities living peacefully in it, and has never had any act of terrorism despite the large foreign population and the open availability of bars, nightclubs and foreign companies on its own soil.

I wonder if PSA of Singapore had won the P&O takeover deal, if the same concerns would have been raised. Would you allow Singapore to manage ports in your country? Do they have a better security record? What about the security record of London, where P&O were previously based? They've had bombings and all sorts of things going on which shows their security is less than capable of handling these things. Dubai has an excellent record up until now. You should also know that the local government of Dubai is in charge of DP World. It is different from the federal government of the UAE as a whole (and those two hijackers were not from Dubai!). Also, it's ridiculous to think that the nationality of some criminals is related to the government in any way.

I'm not much of a Bush supporter, but he's actually right in this occasion. Most maritime analysts from the U.S., Europe and Asia have called this political uproar shamefully racist in nature, and totally baseless.

Our phones are tapped

and you're in here whining because we don't want the same government that trusts us so little that they wiretap our phones, to make the decision that UAE needs to control our ports?

Suck it up.

He does not allow the US

He does not allow the US political landscape into conversation ---ever.

Either he is oblivious to it, rejects it as a Monarch would, or agrees with it as a Republican/Monarch would.

The US has a right

to defend itself. If we have the right to bomb Iraq because of something the POTUS imagined, we have a right to keep the UAE from controlling our ports because of something 'imagined.'

The UAE should just suck it up. We're not telling them how to tend to their national security needs so maybe they should just butt out.

Are we sure he's working for us?

Let's think about this for a minute. Mohammed Atta was identified how many times by Able Danger? And all the other hijackers? Colleen Rowley was told to stand down, Sibil Edmonds was fired, the Bin Ladens were rushed out of the US without being interrogated. We attacked a completely non-threatening sovereign state for bogus reasons. Now we are going to have a foreign company from an area strongly associated with terrorism guard our ports while most of our military is over seas, the Gulf has been destroyed, the elections are rigged and most of the liberals live on either coast. Anybody else feeling a little paranoid? How does the Arab States of America grab ya.

Or, is that what we're supposed to think so we won't object when they start rounding up Muslims for those shiny new KBR detention centers?

I don't trust these people at all.

I truely think Bush lost it.

I truely think Bush lost it. In a time of war (if that is what you want to call it), having an arabic company come 100 feet of our ports is asking for a death wish and more 9-11's. I'm appaulled that he would put Americans at risk. We don't have a little bomb shelter to hide in if there was an attack. Bush does not care about the American people and neither does Dick Cheney. It's time to impeach these fools and do it quick before we end up getting nuked!

Remove the STD's from the

Remove the STD's from the WhiteHouse = Bush and Dick (Cheney).

WASHINGTON - Homeland

WASHINGTON - Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff on Sunday defended the government's security review of an Arab company given permission to take over operations at six major U.S. ports.

"We make sure there are assurances in place, in general, sufficient to satisfy us that the deal is appropriate from a national security standpoint," Chertoff said on ABC's "This Week."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060219/ap_on_go_pr_wh/port_security

Yeah, let's listen to the guy who couldn't even get accurate information about the levees around New Orleans. And maybe when a radioactive shipment comes in, Chertoff will do nothing just like during Katrina. Guess I shouldn't have said Chertoff did nothing, he did what the Bush administration told him to do - shift blame - it's the only thing the administration can do!

Who else has the money to buy them? China, Japan, South Korea

maybe Russia. Only 3-5% of the containers get checked 4 years after 911, how would the UAE do any worse? If the UAE has the financial ties to the major international terrorist networks, it makes it less likely that the ports will be blown-up since the UAE would lose money, unless they had really generous insurance--maybe from the US Treasury.

It's all part of Bush's plan to privatize everything from the American people.

They KNOW the UAE supports bin Laden

They ALL know, including Bush. Anyone who supports this also supports terrorism.

From the 9/11 Commission Report:

The Desert Camp, February 1999.

During the winter of 1998-99, intelligence reported that Bin Ladin frequently visited a camp in the desert, adjacent to a larger hunting camp in Helmand Province of Afghanistan, used by visitors from a Gulf state. Public sources have stated that these visitors were from the United Arab Emirates. At the beginning of February, Bin Ladin was reportedly located there, and apparently remained for more than a week. This was not in an urban area, so the risk of collateral damage was minimal. Intelligence provided a detailed description of the camps. National technical intelligence confirmed the description of the larger camp, and showed the nearby presence of an official aircraft of the UAE. The CIA received reports that Bin Ladin regularly went from his adjacent camp to the larger camp where he visited with Emiratis. The location of this larger camp was confirmed by February 9, but the location of Bin Ladin's quarters could not be pinned down so precisely.

Wasn't it an UAE prince

Wasn't it an UAE prince visiting Osama when we KNEW his exact position but we couldn't destroy him because of fear of killing the UAE prince?

Veto

Bush has just announced that he will veto any bill that blocks his UAE deal on the ports. Also, the deal involves that the UAE will control two ports in charge of sending 40% of our military supplies overseas.

Conservatives = Profits over

Conservatives = Profits over everything + Government over everyone

Sorry, just practicing my chant ;)

Veto Dubya

Bush has just announced that he will veto any bill that blocks his UAE deal on the ports.

All the more reason to veto his sorry ass - and the crooked hoss he rode in on.

IMPEACH BUSH

RDB/ENDIT
------------
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."

Considering the reaction of the Republicans

like Frist and Hastert, I'd say we need to look more closely at who Bush is working for. If they are saying they knew nothing about this and trying to stop it, we have to wonder who came up with this "brilliant" idea. My huess is they live in Saudi Arabia, but often use the surname "Bush."

(_)_)lllD Cheney

I am sick of Bush and Dick trying to destroy this country. If they are so into the 'war' in Iraqmire, perhaps they should go rule over there and we could get someone decent to clean up this mess that they have caused. Three more years of this is going to put us at great risk and danger. Bush must have fell off the wagon by the decisions he's been making. As far as 'dick' Cheney, all he cares about is getting richer and richer. Those two can care less about the American people while they are spending billions in foreign countries. Something is definately wrong with this picture.

DUI

Actually Cheney has more DUIs than Bush. I wonder if the 18 hours Cheney waited to report shooting his friend had anything to do with lowering his blood alcohol count.

Cheney has more DUI's?

I had not heard this but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Do you have a link?

Don't remember where I found

Don't remember where I found it (probably smokinggun.com) but I have a copy Cheney's DUI tickets. I have to give my Right Wing family actual photographic proof before they will even consider it.

- George W. Bush in a debate in St. Charles, Mo., Nov. 2, 2000

Bernie Ward, KGO San Francisco, last night...

on his show had gotten hold of a copy of a secret service report that claimed that Cheney speech was slurred and his actions erratic up to and including the time of the shooting.

That Cheney immediately went for drinks following the shooting incident, could have been as much for raising his blood alcohol level about the norm as giving him a morale boost.

This would certainly be consistant with the delay in getting local law enforcement in to question Cheney.

It is, to say the least, suspicious given Cheney's background with booze.

I do know that when the good 'ol boys' up here in the Orygun mts go hunting/fishing, they take plenty of 6 packs and bottles of booze with them for a weekend in the woods.
