Filibuster Bush's Torture Bill!

Final update: Torture is now legal and Bush is now a Dictator, thanks to a 65-34 vote in the Senate. Here are the Senators who crossed party lines:

Democrats in favor (12) - Carper (Del.), Johnson (S.D.), Landrieu (La.), Lautenberg (N.J.), Lieberman (Conn.), Menendez (N.J), Pryor (Ark.), Rockefeller (W. Va.), Salazar (Co.), Stabenow (Mich.), Nelson (Fla.), Nelson (Neb.)

Republicans against (1) - Chafee (R.I.)

Original post:

Torture is anathema to everything America stands for. The Republican "compromise" led by John McCain was a cynical charade to let McCain pretend to oppose torture while selling out to the Busheviks as he always does. The "compromise" will:

  • Abandon the rule of law and give the President the freedom to interpret the Geneva Conventions any way he sees fit.
  • Provide immunity to those responsible for past human rights abuses
  • Exempt from prosecution those who authorize treatment traditionally considered torture.
  • Strip detainees of access to US courts.

The bill cannot be defeated by only 44 Democrats (Christy is blogging Thursday's debate). This horrendous bill (S. 3930) must be stopped by a filibuster which requires 41 votes against "cloture" (the motion to end debate and hold an up-or-down vote).

Call the Senators below at 1-800-AMNESTY (800-266-3789). Ask the question clearly: will Senator X support a filibuster of Bush's Torture Bill, or will (s)he oppose a filibuster? We need a firm yes or no - be polite but persistent. Post the results of your calls in the comments below. We will keep a tally below, relying on you to report back on your calls.

  • Crossed out names support the filibuster - don't call them
  • Underlined names will be absent - which is good but keep calling them
  • Bold names will probably vote against Bush's Torture Bill, but oppose the filibuster
  • Regular names will probably vote against Bush's Torture Bill, but have not declared their position on a filibuster
  • Italic names will vote for Bush's Torture Bill and against the filibuster

Traitorous Democrats

Menendez and Lautenberg leading a pack of traitors. Menendez thinks this is gonna help him in November?

Jay Rockefeller? With the news that Dr. K is advising the war criminal in the White House I'm not surprised to see someone from the family that helped him get a foot in the door during the 1940s would support methods that right-wing dictators in South America used.

Goodbye Democrats.

Goodbye America.

Time to move before they get the camps fully up and running.

What a disgrace!

steve Otto

Haven't we had enough torture scandles already?

There won't be any more.

There is nothing scandalous about a legal act.

"I love God, but his fan club is freekin meshuggeneh!."

I blame the American people for this, they been so busy kissing ass at home they forgot about our Dictator Government kicking our asses! And, I don't see any help coming in Nov! TRUTHFULLY!

Beetles tune comes to mind....

Goes something like this: "You say you want a revo....."

"I love God, but his fan club is freekin meshuggeneh!."
