This Is Our Last Time

Last night the Democratic Party made history by nominating the first major-party African-American candidate for President, Barack Obama.
Tonight, Barack Obama will accept our nomination. It is fitting that a 20,000 seat arena isn't remotely large enough to mark this moment. Even a 75,000 seat stadium will be too small and many will be turned away.
Rightwingers will mock the white columns. Everyone else in America and the world will marvel at the black man who stands before them.
Incredibly, it was the first viable feminist candidate, Hillary Clinton, who put him over the top. In that single act, the parallel lines of the civil rights and feminist movements met to transform American history.
And we did it through the oldest and largest political party in the world - the party that once fought civil rights - our party, the Democratic Party.
Barack Obama will stand firmly on the ground, but really he stands on the shoulders of giants. Traveling back in time we must recognize those who made his candidacy possible: presidential candidates Rev. Jesse Jackson and Shirley Chisholm, who broke the race and sex barriers to the presidency; presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, who put powerful blacks and women in their cabinets; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose vivid dream (45 years ago today, also in front of Greek columns) we are finally trying to realize;
Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Marion Anderson (who sang in front of Greek columns); presidents Lyndon Johnson (born 100 years ago today), John Kennedy, Harry Truman, and Franklin Roosevelt, who dismantled American apartheid; Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who struggled for 72 years so women could vote; Harriett Tubman (quoted by Hillary Clinton) and Frederick Douglass, who were born into slavery and freed America's slaves; and James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, who gave us the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution with the Bill of Rights, the Democratic Party, and lots of beautiful Greek columns.
Of course none of those giants stood alone. Each rose to fame and power with popular movements, who fought in the streets and the battlefields, the voter registration offices and the voting booths for their controversial causes.
And to elect Barack Obama as our first African-American President, we who are alive today must do the same.
We Democrats were never really divided. But the Corporate Media wanted to make us look divided, and they had the power to project their Bie Lie into every American home. America's shared "reality" is nothing more than the image projected by the Wizards of Oz, the scheming profiteers at who hide behind their corporate curtains with the logos of FOX, NBC, and CNN.
Our truth-sniffing Toto's work in progressive media and blogs. They can pull back the curtains to expose the fraudulent Wizards, but it takes Dorothy's with brains, heart, and courage to find our way home. That means us - all of us.
So Barack Obama is our nominee, but this is our campaign. And we must understand the opposition we face.
We are up against the Republican Party, their corporate allies, and the Bush-Cheney-Rove White House, who will stop at nothing to keep progressive Democrats out of power, and hold them accountable for the crimes they committed over the past 8 years, including war crimes.
And we are up against the enduring emotional power of racism, which will stop at nothing to keep an African-American family out of the Master Bedroom in the All-White House.
Like the suffragists and civil rights leaders, we must lock arms and march forward, and urge our fellow citizens to support us and even join us in our historic cause. They will be inundated with lies, but we must clearly repeat the truth.
The Republican plan is more disastrous war with Iran or Russia; less health care, education, justice and jobs; and environmental catastrophe. The Democratic plan is the opposite: ending war, more health care, education, justice and jobs; and saving the planet before it is too late. That is our choice, and it leaves us no choice.
In Berlin Barack Obama declared, "This is the moment when we must come together to save this planet. Let us resolve that we will not leave our children a world where the oceans rise and famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands. Let us resolve that all nations - including my own - will act with the same seriousness of purpose as has your nation, and reduce the carbon we send into our atmosphere. This is the moment to give our children back their future. This is the moment to stand as one."
He concluded, "People of the world, this is our moment. This is our time."
But in reality, it may be our last time. So from now until the last vote is counted and re-counted by hand if need be, we must keep our eyes on the prize and do everything we can to win.

It's always our time, we have to take it
I believe we always have the power to change minds by taking advantage of our persuasive gifts. Media divisive isn't new. Religious, tribal and racial prejudice is ancient though constantly in flux. But we progressives Americans are struggling to overcome it. Yes, sometimes violently, although mostly through persuasion, negotiation and noblesse oblige. Remember William Randolph Hearst single handedly created the War on Drugs in the last century. No one stopped him. No one spoke the truth about hemp. Today we have Wars on Everything and Everyone. The truth is we're fighting corporate and government created paranoia on many levels reinforced daily by many organized forces. Fear is rampant, it's the cause of racism and health problems. Many Americans believe politics and prescription drugs are the solutions. Today and in the months to come, Obama is both a modern, rational non-military man and a contemporary living symbol of overcoming fear. He's our peace seeking soul and our creative, caring minds combined. He will help rid us of our insidious fears. We must help others to this realization. Only then can we be fear-free and ready to move forward creating a new non-militarist America.
Great post, Bob!
It is our time and the stakes are very high.
We are up against the Rovian BushCo empire that has welcomed
John McCain into their camp after he pulled a 180 on his personality,
values and goals. John Kerry mentioned the two McCains last night.
THAT'S the change in McCain I've been referring to for some time now.
Dear God, what an awful price to pay to keep the neocons smiling.
:-(
We have more people, energy and watchful eyes on the election process than
ever before.
Joe Biden nailed it- we need him! His speech left no doubt that we will fight
the "smears and fears" the Repugs pull out everytime.
Both Hillary and Bill Clinton are firmly committed to Barack's campaign.
Bill's speech last night was great! I was so glad to see our former president
back in full fighting form for us. He was our last, legally elected president.
And yes, the pundits told him that he too was " too young and inexperienced" to be president.
He did become president for eight years of peace and prosperity in the US.
Hmm---wrong, again!
I highly recommend CSPAN 1 for viewing the Convention.
If you're sick of the media guys finding problems where non exist,
this is your station.
No commentary,
No spin
No BS.
Just the Convention all the time until closing at 11PM, EST.
It's great!
:-)
a little typo in your text, I think...
"And we did it through the oldest and largest political party in the world - the party that once fought civil rights - our party, the Democratic Party."
I think you meant fought FOR civil rights!
ANyway, I hope we all get organized and unified and make Barack Obama our next president. What a breath of fresh air, and a great new start that will be. Not only will we as Americans benefit from his leadership, but our global image will be lifted up significantly.
a little typo in your text, I think...
Jane is young, probably less than 50. As much as we might not like to hear it, the history of the Democratic Party, like history of the United States, is not sparklingly clean. There was indeed a time when Democrats fought civil rights. Read about Strom Thurmond; he wasn't always a Republican. There was a time, as a Democrat, he and others like him, fought civil rights every step of the way. That's why, when Condoleezza Rice talks about her father being a Republican because in those days that was the only place for a black man to go, she's right. What she doesn't seem to get that is that if her father were alive today, he'd be a Democrat.
...and yet...
...and yet it will all come to nought if the Dems don't do a better job than they have so far to see that fair voting machines are used throughout the country. They can't be trusted, full stop. At the very least the Dems must insist on a paper trail - and even then, as I understand, the machines can be programmed to return skewed results.
This must become a major effort in the time left. Or it may just be the same old, same old. And haven't we had enough of that, just.
Great post!
We did what we could to affect the choice of ground, but now the battle is joined, and it is where it is, and what remains is to throw ourselves into it and win. The alternative is too awful to contemplate.
For those who still haven't found in themselves the stomach to commit to an Obama victory and throw themselves into the effort, go find Kucinich's 6-minute speech to the Convention at www.afterdowningstreet.org, listen to it (or listen again!) and get yourself fired up! If you can't abide the Obama organization, sign up with Moveon.org or maybe through your union! And then there is clean election work, which may well be critical!
Then get out there and do something, and put your heart into it! And fire up the people around you, and build networks for the long road ahead!
This is our time, and as Bob so chillingly put it, it could be our last!
When the text says that the
When the text says that the Democrats fought civil rights, it is not a typo, but an accurate statement based upon our history.
The Democrats were once the party of the south. Until relatively recently, they did fight AGAINST civil rights and progress of the black community because so many of their individual members did so.
There was a massive shift when the civil rights legislation was finally passed into law, circa 1968-1972. Southern Democrats became Republicans within a single election cycle! Republicans were happy to get them into their camp since they were a minority up to that point. This greatly swelled their ranks.
Re: A Democracy Win
Don't say it may be the last chance for democracy and the Democrats to win. Even if not every progressive Democratic challenger comes out on top, the Obama candidacy may have changed the face of the voting populace forever.
The Second American Revolution
The nomination of Barack Obama last
night was the shot heard round the world, Lexington and Concord, The
Emancipation Proclamation, this was
truely the fruit of our labors to
smash the American Caste System once and for all!!!!!!!
Are we all AMERICAN
Iam sorry but I like to see our candiate descript himself as an American, not a Black or Afro American. We are all American, no matter the color of skin, or nationality. All our forefather's came from somewhere else, be it Irish, Africa, Itay, Engalnd Russia, China , Japan or Mexico, we are still AMERICAN. \\
I am a retired miltiary person(27 years) and still hate the term Balck or Afro American, Latino or any other name before AMERICAN. Please think about this.
Also Senate Reid was right on Joh Mclain, I was on the recieving end while he was in Navy. He belittle everyone around him, because we could not serve his needs.Even when we were right!!!!
Thank you
If only ALL Americans viewed
If only ALL Americans viewed the race, religious, and ethnicity issues as you, and most of the members of Democrats.com, do.
Unfortunately, this is an historic occasion not because Obama is the best qualified candidate, but because he is mixed-race. ALL former presidents have been white males.
As evidenced by current events, the time is rapidly approaching when more true Americans will focus on things we have in common, rather than our strength-building differences.
America is nowhere angry enough
I was hoping the Democratic convention would be an indictment of this administration, not just for their policies and performance, but for trampling over the constitution, an indictment in its literal meaning, for violating the law, for treason, for ousting an active CIA agent, for contempt of congress, and the rest of Dennis Kucinich laundry list. This Democratic Congress has not done its job. Its members are sworn to uphold the constitution and the law, and, by not impeaching the criminals we have in the White House for treason, for plundering the country, lying to the country, and manipulating the international community. The Democratic Congress failed to perform its basic duty, which is why they are politely timid at a four-day convention with lukewarm indictments. By doing nothing, the Democratic Congress is allowing the Republican Party to run as a legitimate party. Congress is sworn to uphold the law, and not impeaching this administration is a betrayal of its duties, and a betrayal of the public trust. The only reason the Republicans are even in the running is because House Speaker Pelosi, refused to do her job.
Wakeupamerica, I heard several condemnations
of warrantless wiretapping, the use of torture, and YES the trampling of our laws,
stated in our Constitution.
Speakers from John Kerry,Ted Kennedy to Al Gore brought this up.
They were there.
wakeupamerica use your brain.
Read Robt. Wexler's "Fire Breathing Liberal' and you will see why the Democrats are able to do so little to oppose the Republican's corrupt, anti-democratic manipulation of our government. You can't make change happen when the Republicans control all the committees, won't allow legislation to be brought to the floor for a vote, and their president vetos any efforts to bring about change to their corrupt administration of our government. Obama's Legacy to the Women's and Civil Right's Movement
Some of us may not know that Fredrick Douglas helped open the doors at the Seneca Falls Women's Suffage Meeting back in the 19th century. We all stand on the shoulders of those who have struggle to make a more perfect union. It is important to know our history, not repeat errors of the past and honor those who have come before us, who have sacrificed to push us to where we are now.
Ummm...thats Frederick Douglass by the way...
and as for all the crimes committed by this present administration, an early Obama speech assured us all that he would look into those matters and IF crimes were committed, he would prosecute the guilty.
Ummm...he hasn't mentioned this since.
