Ted Kennedy, R.I.P.
It's a day to be sad.
Sad for the Kennedy family, which lost its "rock." Sad for the Senate, which lost its best legislator. Sad for the Democratic Party, which lost its most principled leader.
But most importantly, sad for America, which lost one of its most intelligent, kind and generous men.
Sen. Harry Reid said it beautifully: "The liberal lion's mighty roar may now fall silent, but his dream shall never die."
Ted Kennedy, we miss you already.
Watch Sen. Kennedy speak from the heart about health reform:
Statement from President Obama:
Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.
For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.
I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.
An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time.
And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad.
Our hearts and prayers go out to them today--to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family.

Rest in peace, Senator Kennedy.
You came from an affluent, famous family yet
chose to fight for the common man, equality
and healthcare for all.
You are already missed.
My condolences to the entire Kennedy clan.
Our Lion is gone.
What Ted Meant to A Different Baby Jessica
She was called "the littlest refusenik," one of the many Soviet Jews denied permission to leave the Soviet Union because her father had been exposed to government secrets.
But the case of Jessica Katz was special because she was a baby born with a nutritional deficiency that stopped her from growing. She was a tiny baby dying in a Moscow hospital, getting weaker by the day.
It was U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy who, her parents say, eventually saved her life. Read more.
The Value of a Great Leader
Millions of people have grown up with the Kennedy family. Being from the tv generation, I have grown up watching the Kennedy brothers advocate for the common American citizen. They have led me down a path wanting the same thing for our country. I have watched the turmoil of the sixties and now the turmoil of the first decade of the 21st century. All three Kennedy brothers gave huge value to our country and American citizens by advocating the next step as to how to make our country better and healthier, whether it was with civil liberties, healthcare, or education. Ted Kennedy will be missed with all our heart. The value he gave to our country was priceless.
Health Care and Senator Kennedy
Fellow Democrats,
I am beyond angry this night with the Democrats in Washington. From the Junior congressman all the way to the President. With the passing of a great American and dedicated Democrat, Ted Kennedy, you Democrats should all be ashamed of yourselves for not taking care of health care for all while he was still alive. You, the Democrats, control all of the offices of government now. You told us if we worked hard and got you control of the House, the Senate, and the Whitehouse we would get all of those progressive items on our agenda. First the excuse was that the republicans controlled everything and they would push through their conservative agendas because they controlled Washington. So we, the people, worked hard to win the House, the Whitehouse, and the “majority” in the Senate. Then the excuse was that you could not push through the progressive agenda without sixty votes to break a republican Senate filibuster. Although if you had a civics class in high school you knew that this was not true and that the rule is majority rules. So, we the people worked hard yet again and now you have this imaginary filibuster breaking sixty votes and you still stick your tails between your legs when in the presence of republicans. Now, with one of the most important issues facing this country in many years lying in your laps, you are failing by playing games with the republicans. You should all be ashamed of yourselves! If you can’t do it for your constituents, if you can’t do it for the country, if you can’t do it for any other reason, do it in memory of Senator Kennedy. Do it now with the “public option”, hell do it now with single payer, period. Again I must remind you, YOU, the Democrats control Washington. Take charge, show leadership, and show us some backbone! We have your backs and will again work hard for you in the next election, if you work hard for us. Make history and get health care for all. As Senator Kennedy said, “That we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American, North, South, East, West, young, old will have decent quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege.”
John Grubbs
Eloquently said Mr. Grubbs!
Eloquently said Mr. Grubbs! There never has been a time when Americans came together to fight for the Democrat Party as we have in the past several years. I do not want to see our efforts go to waste! As I mentioned somewhere else on this site, leave the Republicans to the side and push on with this effort. There can't be any excuses at all. We've fought hard and long for what we want for this country.
I see people arguing against the healthcare reform with their pitiful reasons "why we should not"... It is said, when the social security bill was being thought about, similar people had similar arguments saying it would promote socialism/communism, etc. Did those people decline Social Security payments later in life after it was passed? Did they decline Medicare? I doubt it. When healthcare reform is passed they will rely on this reform if they lose their job, become suddenly very ill, when they get dropped from their own insurance, when they lose their job after 50 years old, etc. I don't think they will argue about it then, they will accept it and be glad it is there for them.
Many people do not buy health insurance if they ARE working with their own small business. It is TOO expensive. They earn money and make a good living but don't want to use their money for what seems like an extraordinary expense when you are in good health and don't use it much. So you are stuck when a traumatic medical problem arises in your life.
Senator Ted Kennedy knew there are many reasons why Americans need this safety net. Once the healthcare reform is made, we need to make more changes in order to comfortably afford it. I like the idea of naming the Healthcare reform bill after him. Congressional Democrats, please don't goof this up! Take charge and get this done!
The Dems are simmering on the stove right now, waiting to see what happens next. If this reform is not made, the trust will not be there again. We have nothing but faith and trust and hope to rely on now that Senator Kennedy is not with us. We all know what he would have wanted and that he wanted to be alive to see it.
The Lion
it's time for progressives to take the mantle of the Lion and collectively keep the roar alive.
The Lion is the perfect mascot for Progressives.
and distinctly different from the blue dog
Fed Up With Right-Wing Propaganda
I am mourning the loss of Senator Kennedy and also very angry at the Democrats for succumbing to Rethuglican tactics and propaganda. We need HEALTH CARE FOR ALL and if we let a bunch of UNEDUCATED, GUN-TOTING, ILL-MANNERED, JUVENILE, ALL-FOR-THEMSELVES, SO-CALLED CHRISTIAN BARBARIANS allow us to lose this chance for health care then we are no better than they are!
