The Law Is What The King Says It Is...

After spending a good part of the day Tuesday studying the U.S. attorneys response to the motion for a new trial filed in federal court by former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman and HealthSouth founder Richard Scrushy, I re-watched The Other Boleyn Girl film on Encore last night. As many long-time readers will remember, we spent a good bit of time and space back during the Bush years showing parallels between American democracy then and European monarchy in the days of Henry VIII as well as King George III. So what’s the lesson for today? Read the full column to find out...

Coal Power Petition

7287 of 40000 people have signed this petition.
Background

Coal-fired power plants are the largest source of global warming pollution in the United States--yet right now, our country is poised to build many new dirty coal plants.

Virtually all of these proposed, new coal plants lack carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which aims to capture a plant's carbon emissions and store it underground. Building more plants without CCS would lock us into decades of rising carbon emissions at a time when we must rein in global warming pollution.

We already have renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies readily available that can meet our country's near-term energy needs. Please urge Congress to oppose the construction of new coal-fired power plants unless they feature CCS technology.

Stop Global Warming

365 of 10000 people have signed this petition.
Background

Global warming is one of the most serious challenges facing us today. To protect the health and economic well-being of current and future generations, we must reduce our emissions of global warming pollution by using the technology, know-how, and practical solutions already at our disposal.

We can curb climate change, break our dependence on oil, and put Americans back to work--but we need all of our lawmakers on board to do it. In late June, the House of Representatives took an historic vote to pass comprehensive climate and energy legislation.

Now we need the Senate to strengthen and pass the House bill. Please urge President Obama to play an active role in ensuring that Congress passes a strong, comprehensive climate and energy policy this fall.
