May 1st (May Day) is shaping up to be quite a day of resistance, with strikes by the ILWU, the Teamsters, Postal Workers, plus immigrant rights rallies, and peace and impeachment activities. (More info here.)

It's Mission Accomplished Day, Downing Street Minutes Day, and May Day - the original Labor Day, which is celebrated everywhere except the country of its birth, the USA.

AfterDowningStreet.org proposed protests outside the local offices of all 435 Members of Congress at noon, and the response was enthusiastic. (It doesn't have to be noon if another time like 9am or 5pm is better for your local group.) Would you like to get involved?

Check for a MayDay Protest already being planned in your district: To do this, you must be registered and logged in. Then go to http://democrats.com/local and look for a MayDay announcement below the "Congressional District" heading. If you see one, open it and post a comment below it offering to help, or contact the organizers in whatever way they have suggested (they may have posted a phone number or email address).

Clarence Thomas, National Co-Chair of the Million Worker March Movement and Executive Board member of International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 10, spoke on April 24th, 2008, at the Iraq Town Hall meeting, in the Grand Lake Theater, Oakland, CA. The ILWU has committed to blocking ports on May 1st in opposition to the occupation of Iraq.

This Thursday, May 1st, at noon, there will be anti-war demonstrations across the country. It's Mission Accomplished Day (5 years) and it's the original Labor Day (122 years). Concerned citizens will be leaving work to rally in front of their congressional members' offices. Here in Richmond, we will gather in front of Senator Webb's office to demand that he stop funding the occupation of Iraq. Although he says he opposes the war, he continues to vote for funding. Anyone interested in visiting Congressman Gerold Nadler on May 1st at noon, and possibly staying in his office at 21 Varick Street, New York City, NY, please let me know.

We will bring the impeachment petition, Yoo's torture memo, and all the other war crimes information to prompt the Chairman of the sub-committee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties to do the right thing!

To use the tools offered by this website, you must be registered and logged in. (Be sure to include a valid street address in your Congressional District - if not your own, then use some other building.)

Connect with others to start planning an MayDay Protest:

Go to http://democrats.com/local and find the "Congressional District" heading near the bottom. Just to the right you'll see [Post]. Click on [Post]. A blank form will open. Fill it in as follows:

In the "Subject" line write the words "MayDay Protest Volunteer".

In the box listing numerous "Topics" click on "MayDay Protests" and leave that line highlighted.

In the "Body" space, identify yourself and write what you're willing to do, and what you need help to do. Write your ideas for a possible MayDay Protest. If you want to hold a small meeting to plan the event, post a time and place (for example a convenient coffee shop or library). Or just let people know how they should contact you to get involved in the planning process.

At the very bottom, click "Submit".

Post an announcement of an MayDay Protest:
