Hampton Roads Rally for Clean Energy

For years, John McCain and the Republicans have funneled billions of our tax dollars to oil companies via tax breaks and subsidies—often at the expense of clean energy projects and green job development. John McCain's new tax plan includes almost $4 billion in tax cuts for Big Oil. This commitment t...(more)o oil company profits over clean energy progress has hurt us at the pump, and it's hurting our local economies.

***Check back regularly as more details become available.***

No War, No Warming – No Mas, No More - Stop the RNC!

Come to the Twin Cities, Minnesota To Take Action at the Republican National Convention

Sept. 1-4, 2008. Come Early!

With the occupation of and war in Iraq continuing and escalating—with more Iraqis and US soldiers dying—with the suicide rate of vets hitting record numbers—and with the costs of war spiraling out of control with hundreds of millions being spent in Iraq every day that is badly needed here at home for housing, jobs, schools, health care and clean energy--we must resist!

We are also experiencing climate disruption on a major scale as carbon emissions keep going up and up. People all over the world, especially low-income people and people of color, are feeling the global warming impacts in the form of super-destructive tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes and drought. Our climate is spiraling out of control because of the power of the oil, coal and automobile companies who have put their profits before human lives and our threatened ecosystem.

The US drive toward empire and global domination of all people in order to control and exploit the earth’s resources is being led by the violent neoconservatives who dominate the Republican Party.

This drive toward death must stop! We must let the country know that large numbers of us reject their plans to keep wrecking our ecosystem, wage wars for oil and make a mockery of democracy. We must rise up and put our bodies in their way.

No War, No Warming is calling for people to join in nonviolent direct action to disrupt the opening proceedings of the RNC.

We will be working in coordination with Twin Cities activists and progressive groups who are organizing RNC actions to successfully implement a diverse action strategy. No War, No Warming’s plan is to establish public assembly sites to help facilitate mass participation in marches to the Xcel convention center where the RNC is meeting in order to reclaim strategic areas around it. Our intention is to occupy that space—to swarm, sieze and stay--using creative acts of direct action and nonviolent civil disobedience.

This is an open cluster and we encourage people to start organizing affinity groups now. We will be participating in spokescouncil meetings in the days before the convention and hold cluster meetings and trainings as well!

There are many action camps this summer and NWNW will be hosting one in Washington DC July 20-25. The camp –an Urban Action Training – will focus on mobile tactics including marches, blockades, swarms and more!

We urge support of the actions at the RNC. We must stop the RNC’s drive for permanent war and deeper and deeper climate disruption!

For information contact: info@nowarnowarming.org, or go to www.nowarnowarming.org.

DC: Demonstrate Against the Mortgage Bankers Association-Annual Policy Conference

Start: 04/16/2008 - 3:00pm

4/16/08-Demonstrate-Washington, D.C.
Stop the Foreclosures and Evictions Now!

Demonstrate Against the Mortgage Bankers Association-Annual Policy Conference on Wednesday, April 16th, 2008.

DEMAND a MORATORIUM on FORECLOSURES & EVICTIONS NOW!

The Ad Hoc National Network to Stop Foreclosures & Evictions
A fast growing network of activists organizing in every region of the country.

http://www.stopforeclosuresandevictions.com/

When the Mortgage Bankers Association meets in Washington, D.C., on April 16-17 at the swanky Washington Court Hotel, their gathering will draw protesters. The MBA is a national lobbying group that represents the interests of the banks, including lending firms that are directly responsible for the evictions of tens of thousands of people, including both buyers and renters, from their foreclosed homes.

The MBA plans to hold its sessions behind closed doors in order to map out policies of protecting the banks’ profits and their predatory lending policies. They also plan to reach out to members of Congress.

An Ad Hoc Committee to Stop Foreclosures and Evictions has called an emergency demonstration at the MBA meeting to demand a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions to take place immediately. The main slogan of this committee is, “Bail out people before bankers!”

Part of the call to action by the Ad Hoc Committee states: “Whether it’s rising gas and food prices; the lack of health care; losing our jobs; having our wages cut; sinking further into credit card, student loan or medical debt; or budget cuts; or the destruction of public housing; or ending this war that is costing lives and almost a half a billion dollars a day—surviving hard times is going to require that we stick together and organize.”

The organizers say the main goal of this demonstration is to help spark a united national fightback movement of those of all ages, nationalities and social backgrounds, who are directly and indirectly impacted by this growing economic crisis.

Why the time has come for a national fightback

The subprime loan scandal that began to rock the housing market last year continues to further weaken an already shaky capitalist economy to its very core. All of the sugar coated, fancy terms of the bourgeois economists and “experts” cannot hide the undeniable fact that the larger part of the worldwide economy—with its epicenter in Wall Street—is in a full-blown recession with no foreseeable end in sight.

There isn’t a day that goes by when there aren’t major articles on the front pages of papers, large and small, on how the collapsing housing market is catalyst for ever deeper suffering and hardships in individual neighborhoods, cities, rural areas and states.

Subprime lenders are nothing more than profit-hungry conglomerations that prey on those who have little to no credit—particularly struggling single mothers who are Black or Latin@. These companies offer mortgages that look like a good deal on the surface but which turn out to be rife with excessive fees, high penalties for refinancing and other hidden costs. What was once considered a hallmark of “the American dream”—“owning” a home—has been transformed into “an American nightmare.”

Just how widespread is this housing crisis? According to the Center for Responsible Lending, a nonprofit organization, 7.2 million families live in homes with a subprime mortgage. Families with a subprime loan approved in 1998 through 2006 who have lost or will lose their home to foreclosure in the next few years amount to an estimated 2.2 million.

The dollar amount of subprime loans outstanding in 2007 was $1.3 trillion compared to $332 billion in 2003. The amount of increase over these four years alone has been 292 percent. One out of five of these subprime loans made in 2005-2006 is expected to default. (www.responsiblelending.org) And these figures are just the tip of the iceberg.

Some newspapers have reported that a small but nonetheless growing number of those who are being threatened with foreclosure have taken desperate measures such as carrying out arson in hopes of collecting insurance.

“The FBI reports grew 4 percent in suburbs and 2.2 percent in cities from 2005 to 2006. ... In California, a state hit particularly hard by foreclosures, insurance companies must tell the state within 60 days if they suspect a fire is ‘questionable.’ Last year, more than 120 reports were filed, and in 14, foreclosure was named a possible factor.

“The previous year, just 70 reports were filed, with seven citing foreclosure, says the state insurance commissioner’s office. ... Arrest warrants for arson in Detroit rose 89 percent between 2005 and 2007. ‘We are up to our eyeballs in arsons,’ says Steve Varnas, of the Detroit Fire Department. ‘We’re not only dealing with hardened criminals. We’re dealing with desperate people.’” (Los Angeles Times, Jan. 28, 2008)

Go to www.StopForeclosuresandEvictions.org to endorse, volunteer or donate to this important demonstration.

MN, Eden Prairie: Protest Bush & Sen. Norm Coleman

Start: 08/21/2007 - 11:00am

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

Bush/Coleman Minneapolis event protest 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 21st

Bryant Lake Regional Park Protest Picnic

In the late afternoon of this coming Tuesday, August 21, George W Bush will be the honored guest at a fundraising reception for Senator Norm Coleman at the home of William and Tani Austin at 6641 Beach Road, on the west shore of Bryant Lake, in Eden Prairie, MN.

Have you received your invitation? Perhaps not and perhaps just as well. It costs $1,000 per person to get in the door. If you want a photo-op with W, it will cost you $10,000 per couple at the co-host level, or you can go for the host level at $14,000 per couple. This party is not being organized for ordinary citizens such as you and me. The press is not invited, either. As W once said to a similarly ritzy dinner gathering, "This is an impressive crowd - the haves and the have-mores. Some people call you the elites; I call you my base."

WEEP NOT! WE, THE PEOPLE, CAN HAVE A VERY IMPOSING PRESENCE AT THIS PARTY. WE ARE PLANNING A BRING-YOUR-OWN-LUNCH PICNIC within sight and hearing of W's party. Relative to Bush's party, we will be on the other side of a very small stretch of water at the north end of the puddle of water called Bryant Lake. We will be at Bryant Lake Regional Park. This park has a public beach, a public boat launch, a picnic area, and a concession where rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats can be rented out. It is a small park, so there will probably be no problem finding each other. We will probably gather at the dock near the public launch. From there, it is only a few hundred yards across open water to the $3,000,000 Austin mansion. BRING LARGE SIGNS and BANNERS, and what other media devices you have to get your messages to Bush and Coleman. If you want to fly an anti war kite, I will have a few on hand to lend out for the occasion.

The official invitation for W's elite base says:
Doors open at 2:30 PM
Doors close at 3:15 PM
Photo opportunity at 3:45 PM
Reception begins at 4:15 PM

THE PEOPLE - THAT'S US - SHOULD GET TO BRYANT LAKE REGIONAL PARK AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

Experience has taught us that traffic gets blocked and snarled at the time of the event for a miles wide area near the site. It is helpful to get situated BEFORE the security people get set up. I would say, try to get there by 1 PM. Then you can just hang out and party for a while before the real fun begins. I will be there at least by noon, maybe even 11AM.

Directions: From Minneapolis go west on hywy 394 or hywy 7 or whatever to 494. 494 runs north and south through the western suburbs. Find the junction of 494 and Crosstown hywy #62. Go east on 62 to Shady Oak Road. (Or, a shorter way from south Minneapolis is to just take crosstown 62 west to Shady Oak Road.) Then go south on Shady Oak Road to Old Shady Oak Road. Go West on Old Shady Oak Road to Cherokee Trail West. Take a right on Cherokee Trail West to Rowland Road. Somewhere along Rowland Road near this intersection you will see a sign leading to the west for Bryant Lake Regional Park.

During the afternoon of Aug 21, only, I will have my cell phone turned on. The number is 612-805-9077. If last minute problems turn up with our plan we can talk. Another number you could call is 202-321-0877. This is Leah Olm's cell phone. Leah is with an organization called Iraq Summer. She and her group plan to be at Bryant Lake Regional Park to protest, also. Her group is coordinating their plans with us. Leah can also be reached at 612-419-2570. Her email address is minnesota5@iraq summer.org. At this point, we do not have a coherent back-up plan. If you have questions or ideas regarding this event call or write to:

Roger Cuthbertson 952-474-2476, rojo@visi.com Pass the word. Wage peace.

Impeach For Peace

more party plans

THIS TUESDAY, AT THE PARTY, GO FLY A KITE! (KITES FURNISHED!) PICTURE AT LEAST 9 COLORFUL MESSAGE KITES IN THE SKY above the heads of W and Norm.

As some friends of mine know, I have taken quite an interest in kite flying, lately. I have collected 9 large kites, with string, that lend themselves to being painted with short messages of large letters. Four of these kites are already painted and ready to go. The messages for these are:

STOP THE WAR!

IMPEACH BUSH!

BRIDGES NOT BOMBS!

PU,DU!

The other 5 kites are not yet painted with any message. I have the paint. I have some of the string. All we need are people to volunteer to fly the kites and to help with designing and painting the messages. We definitely need some messages pertaining to Norm Coleman. Any ideas for messages?

Call me or email me if you would be willing to fly one of the kites.

Most of us will probably fly the kites from shore. But some people might be able to fly their kites from water-craft.

CALL IF YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER TO FLY ONE OF THE KITES. LET ME KNOW WHICH KITE YOU WANT OR IF YOU WANT TO PAINT YOUR OWN. ALSO, CALL IF YOU HAVE IDEAS FOR SHORT MESSAGES.

Of course, signs and other means of messaging are fine, too. Don’t miss the party. A backup plan is beginning to emerge, just in case the park is made unavailable to us.

My phone number is 952-474-2476. My email address is rojo@visi.com. Wage peace. Roger Cuthbertson

MI, Dearborn: GONZO MUST GO Rally

Start: 05/08/2007 - 11:30am

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

Controversial Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will be appearing Tues. May 8, in Dearborn, Michigan, to discuss "Enhancing & Securing Civil Liberties of all Americans." Join fellow citizens in a wide coalition of groups and individuals protesting Gonzales and his trampling of Civil Liberties in America.

Citizens are stepping up as an answer to Gonzales horrible human rights record, and immoral interpretation of the Constitution.

Under his leadership the Justice Department and the FBI have been accused of improperly and illegally using the USA PATRIOT Act to uncover personal information about U.S. citizens.

His role in the dismissal of eight U.S. attorneys has led members of Congress to investigate his actions.

He is the architect for the US dismissing parts of the Geneva Conventions to allow torture and is directly involved in the decision to allow foreign combatants in U.S. custody to be deported to nations that allow torture.

The event is sponsored by the Detroit Economic Club.
