DC and Nationwide by Phone: NCNR Action Day to Impeach Bush-Cheney

Start: 11/10/2008 - 12:00am

End: 11/10/2008 - 11:59pm

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

Dear Friends,

Join us in calling for the indictment of Bush and Cheney for war crimes.

Obama has won the election, and now more than ever we need to continue our work calling for peace and justice. We must continue to demand that the new president ends the occupation of Iraq and does not escalate military action in Afghanistan. We also must call for justice and demand that Bush and others in his administration are held accountable for the murders of millions of innocent people from Iraq, from Afghanistan, and almost 4200 US soldiers.

Our work is far from over. I will be flying to Washington, DC to join other activists from around the country in an action on November 10 at the Department of Justice. This action is being organized by the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance (NCNR) www.iraqpledge.org following the principles of nonviolence that we have learned from Gandhi, King, Day and others.

In September organizers from NCNR sent a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey (See letter below). In the letter we called for the indictment of Bush and Cheney for war crimes. We asked for a meeting to discuss this matter. We have not heard back from AG Mukasey, so on November 10 we will go to the Department of Justice in Washington, DC and demand a meeting, demand that Bush, Cheney and others are held accountable. If we are not granted a meeting, some of us will be led by our conscience to take action in the spirit of nonviolence where we may be risking arrest. We take this action knowing that we are doing what we are called to do, knowing that we are doing the only thing we can do as our leaders have continued to disobey the laws of the United States and to trample on and shred the U.S. Constitution for the last 8 years.

If possible, please join us in DC on November 10 for this action. If you are not able to make it to DC, we ask citizens all around the country to join us in solidarity through local actions on November 10 and beyond as we call for the restoration of justice.

First, call the attorney general’s office on November 10 to encourage him to meet with the citizenry outside who want to discuss the indictment of Bush and Cheney: Department of Justice Main Switchboard – 202-514-2000 and Office of the Attorney General – 202-353-1555.

Second, hold a solidarity demonstration at your local federal building or local Attorney General office on November 10. During the demonstration, you would have a copy of the NCNR letter (see below) requesting a meeting. You would emphasize that the AG must meet with these concerned citizens and must consider an indictment.

Third, ask your Congressperson to support H. Resolution 1509, introduced by Tammy Baldwin. This resolution expresses “the sense of the House of Representatives that the next president should immediately work to reverse damaging and illegal actions taken by the Bush/Cheney Administration”. The resolution states the need to fully investigate the administration for alleged crimes and hold them accountable for any illegal acts.

Fourth, insist that the new Congress, in January 2009, uphold the subpoenas that they have issued to investigate crimes of the Bush administration. The subpoenas have been mocked and ignored by the current administration. The new Congress must reissue these subpoenas and have them supported by the new administration so that justice can prevail across the land.

It is time, no matter who becomes our next president, to bring the criminals of the Bush regime to justice. Please, wherever you are, do your part and join us in this call for justice and truth.

We, the people, have the power and we can restore justice.

For more information or to join this action, please contact:

Max mobuszewski@verizon.net or Joy jsfirst@tds.net

In hope for a more peaceful tomorrow,

Joy First

Madison, WI

608 222-7581 jsfirst@tds.net

LETTER TO ATTORNEY GENERAL MUKASEY:

National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance

325 East 25th Street

Baltimore, MD 21218

September 24, 2008

Attorney General Michael Mukasey

United States Department of Justice

950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

Washington, D.C. 20530

Dear Hon. Mukasey:

I am writing on behalf of the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance. We are concerned citizens who tried to prevent the illegal invasion of Iraq. While we were unsuccessful, we have been devoting much time and energy to convince Congress to end the occupation. Over time we discovered that the Bush-Cheney administration may have engaged in illegal behavior leading up to the war and afterwards.

NCNR members would like to meet with you to discuss the indictment of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney. We are quite flexible and would arrange our schedules to meet with a DOJ representative at a selected date and time. Our group would be small, and it would include someone who was directly affected by the illegal invasion of Iraq. Note there is an urgency to this matter.

At the meeting we would hope to discuss several examples of what we perceive to be illegal behavior on the part of the Bush administration. For example, the administration made false claims about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein in order to build a public case for war. This manipulation of pre-war intelligence included a claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction which could threaten the United States. Intelligence was also manufactured to claim a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda.

It is our understanding, though, that on October 1, 2002, the CIA provided Bush with its National Intelligence Estimate, a consensus opinion of all sixteen US intelligence agencies. On page 8, it clearly states Hussein was not an imminent threat to the security of this country.

After the invasion of Iraq, the resulting calamity has left more than 4,000 members of the U.S. military dead, thousands more wounded, hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis and the wholesale destruction of a country. It can be argued that the architects of this war had a criminal state of mind.

Moreover, the invasion seems to have violated numerous U.S. and international laws, including but not limited to USC 2441 (War Crimes Act of 1996), the Geneva Conventions, the Nuremberg Tribunal Charter, the U.N. Charter and Resolutions, the Laws and Customs of War on Land. We also believe U.S. law was violated through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of U.S. citizens without a warrant. The violations continued with the authorization to torture thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and to hide prisoners in order to deny them due process.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, appointed by President Truman to be the Chief Prosecutor at the Nuremberg Tribunals following World War II, stated, "...let me make clear that while this law is first applied against German aggressors, the law includes, and if it is to serve a useful purpose it must condemn aggression by any other nations, including those which sit here now in judgment." Thus we have a Nuremberg obligation to try to hold our government officials accountable.

Also there is a well-established law in our jurisprudence which places an affirmative duty on all of us to expose any treasonous or criminal act which comes to our attention. Failure to do so is defined as "misprision." As good citizens, we are writing to you out of duty, knowing that if felonies have been committed we are to inform a magistrate. Silently to observe the commission of a felony, without using any endeavors to apprehend the offender, is a misprision.

We look forward to your response and the scheduling of a meeting. In this country, there is the belief no person is above the law. So Bush and Cheney should be indicted, accused of the serious violations of the law which we enumerated above.

In peace,

Max Obuszewski

VA, Charlottesville: MEET BUGLIOSI IN PERSON ON THE LOCK-UP-BUSH TOUR

Start: 10/16/2008 - 7:00pm

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

Vincent Bugliosi prosecuted Charles Manson. He is the author of bestsellers including "Helter Skelter" and his latest: "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder." In his new book, Bugliosi makes a devastating, well documented case that President George W. Bush is guilty of the murder of U.S. soldiers as a result of the lies he told to justify the invasion of Iraq, and can be prosecuted by any state attorney general or county prosecutor.

As a Los Angeles prosecutor, Bugliosi represented the state in 106 major cases and won 105, including each of his 21 murder cases. Since his first book, "Helter Skelter," he's been one of the top true crime writers with three number one best sellers and numerous awards. In his best known case, Bugliosi convicted Charles Manson of murder even though Manson was not present at two of the crime scenes when the victims were murdered.

Bugliosi's argument is simple. Bush wanted a war with Iraq. He had to show that a preemptive invasion of Iraq was justified. To do this Iraq had to be an imminent threat to the United States. There were two major problems. Bush couldn't prove any connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11. More importantly, Bush's own 2002 classified intelligence estimate found that Saddam was not an imminent threat to the United States. Bush simply reversed the findings of the National Intelligence Estimate of 2002, and sent men and women off to fight a fraudulent and unnecessary war, knowing full well that some of them would come home in boxes.

WI, Milwaukee: “Take Back America – Impeachment is Imperative NOW” Town Meeting

Start: 07/29/2008 - 7:30pm

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

In Milwaukee the “Take Back America – Impeachment is Imperative NOW” town meeting will be held Tuesday, July 29th starting at 7:30 PM at the Friends Meeting House, 3224 N. Gordon Place, Milwaukee, WI near Capitol Dr. and Humboldt Ave. In Milwaukee Dr. Bowman will speak.

Both town meetings, in Madison (on 7/28) and Milwaukee, are part of Dr. Bowman’s national speaking tour advocating impeachment and change. Bowman stated, “We must take back America from the corporate interests. Our immediate goals are to prevent a war on Iran, end the occupation of Iraq, and start impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Cheney.” In 2000 Bowman ran for president in the primary for the Reform Party nomination, which Pat Buchanan won. In 2006 in Florida Bowman ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the U.S. House against an incumbent Republican representative.

Bowman, a Vietnam veteran, was Director of Advanced Space Programs Development during the Carter presidency. President Reagan took this program and turned it into his offensive “Star Wars” program. Bowman then retired from the military and became an early and open critic of Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). On the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour he called SDI “...the ultimate military lunacy, easily overwhelmed and vulnerable.”

Directions: Start on Humboldt Avenue between Locust & Capitol, find Auer Avenue, go east 2 blocks to the dead end.

Both town meetings are free and will include discussion periods.

Start: 07/25/2008 - 12:00am

End: 07/25/2008 - 4:00pm

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

9 a.m. "Choose the Constitution" Press Conference & Rally

Rayburn Building, Independence Avenue

10 a.m. Hearing on the Imperial Presidency of George W. Bush

House Judiciary Committee, Rayburn Bldg, Rm. 2141

For information about the rally and hearing, as well as possible camping or housing arrangements (subject to occupancy) in D.C., check here: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/hearingday

CSPAN will be covering the hearings.

The Office of the Judiciary is expected to post a video of the hearing on their website: http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/calendar.html

PLEASE take as many of these five actions as possible to:

ensure that Judiciary Committee members attend the July 25 hearing

urge the members to vote to hold impeachment hearings based on the evidence presented July 25

insist on media coverage of the hearing

Huge thanks to Pat Thomas, Melbourne, Florida, for the following action list:

If you feel that patriotism and concern for the world-at-large requires your vigilance and active participation as an American, join me in working every single day for the near future on the impeachment debate. This IS a small, small window open right now...Remember that power yields nothing without our demanding it!

   1. Contact every member of the Judiciary and insist that they attend the hearing! The hearing is on a Friday and they usually don’t work on Fridays. http://judiciary.house.gov/about/members.html

Faxing is absolutely worth a try. If you wish to email them in one fell swoop, do so here: http://judiciary.house.gov/about/contact.html

If you wish to leave a comment on voicemail, the Democrats' House Judiciary Office is Phone: 202-225-3951 and the Republicans' is 202-225-6504. Don't omit the Republicans, even if you contact them last. NINE House Republicans (contrary to the minority leadership's strategy) voted to send Kucinich's latest impeachment proposal, H.Res.1345--which stated that Bush had lied to Congress to get authorization for his invasion of Iraq--to the Judiciary Committee:

Brady (TX)

Gilchrest (MD)

Walter Jones (NC)

Manzullo (IL)

Tim Murphy (PA)

Ron Paul (TX)

Reichert (WA)

Christopher Shays (CT)

Mike Turner (OH)!

   2. Call your Representative (congressional switchboard: 1-800-828-0498) to urge him/her to call for FORMAL hearings in the Judiciary to follow the "preliminary" hearing of July 25 (preferably to begin prior to the commencement of the August recess 2 weeks after July 25). Ask him/her to sign Kucinich's resolutions to impeach Bush (H.Res.1258 and H.Res.1345). (Thus far, Wexler [FL-19], Woolsey [CA-6], Barbara Lee [CA-9], Hinchey [NY-22], Baldwin [WI-02], Farr [CA-17], and Towns [NY-10] have co-sponsored H.Res.1258 and Wexler [FL-19] and Barbara Lee [CA-9] have co-sponsored H.Res.1345.)

   3. Send an "official" email to your Representative via Rep. Dennis Kucinich's impeachment petition:

http://impeachment.kucinich.us/petition/

   4. Contact the mainstream media and demand that they start NOW to report on the impeachment issue and that they cover the July 25th hearing! Write a letter to your local newspaper. Email / call national media outlets. Here's one list for contact info: http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=111%20

   5. SPREAD THE WORD as much as you're willing and humanly able to do... Make sure that at least your fellow Americans have heard about the July 25th hearing to discuss the actions of President George W. Bush; perhaps they'll be interested in contacting their Congress person, etc. Talk with friends and neighbors. Email people you know. Share your opinion on internet blogs and websites that allow comments.

10:00 a.m. Room 2141, Rayburn Building, Washington DC

DC: Impeachment for Peace Picnic and Body Spell "IMPEACH"

Start: 07/27/2008 - 2:00pm

End: 07/27/2008 - 5:00pm

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

Please join the Washington Peace Center, CodePINK DC, and the pro-peace and justice community for our 3rd Impeach For Peace Picnic on this Sunday, 7/27/2008 from 2 - 5 PM at the Grassy Knoll by the Washington Monument, on the National Mall between 14th and 15th Streets.

We'll have rock music and fiery rhetoric, as well as drinks and PBJ sandwich fixins. Please bring signs, banners, blankets. There will even be a photographer on top of the Washington Monument to capture all the action as we spell a giant IMPEACH with our bodies and blankets! We will be joined by DC indy rock legend Phil Duarte (aka Philvis) for sounds of rock, rage and justice.

For those who believe that the Constitution still matters, and that the ringleaders of this criminal administration must be held to account, the last weeks have brought some very good news. First, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi modified her opposition to impeachment. Then the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by John Conyers, decided to hold a preliminary hearing on impeachment on Friday, July 25.

See you there! More info: marxjay@gmail.com
