DC: Slavery by Another Name with Douglas Blackmon

Book Event: Slavery by Another Name with Douglas Blackmon
Come join us at Busboys & Poets for a night with Wall Street Journal writer Douglas Blackmon.

Douglas Blackmon, the author of Slavery by Another Name, will share his book and speak with us about neo-slavery, race, poverty, and politics. It will be great night with good food and great company!

Slavery by Another Name uses a vast record of original documents and personal narratives to unearth the lost stories of slaves and their descendants, who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude.

It also reveals the stories of those who fought unsuccessfully against the re-emergence of human labor trafficking, the modern companies that profited most from neo-slavery, and the system’s final demise in the 1940s, partly due to fears of enemy propaganda about American racial abuse at the beginning of World War II.

NY, NYC: Lynne Stewart: An American Story - Rough Cut of a New Film

Lynne Stewart: An American Story
The rough cut of a new film by Francis van den Heuvel.

The cliché after the September 11th attacks was that "the world had changed forever." And in some ways this is true. But more than the Twin Towers may have been destroyed - since that day centuries of judicial protections and procedures have been under attack. In the name of a "War on Terror" there has been a war on justice - and there may be no better example than the prosecution and conviction of one of New York's best known defence attorneys, Lynne Stewart. Her case forms the backbone of this film.

PA, Philadelphia: Rep. John Conyers Speaks on HR 676

I have just received confirmation that Congressman John Conyers (MI) has accepted the invitation from the PNHP Philadelphia Metropolitan Chapter (Physicians for a National Health Plan) and HCAP to speak on HR 676 and what all of us need to do to muster massive support.

Please make plans to attend this program. They have not yet discussed the Agenda as they received the confirmation from Conyers' office yesterday.

We will need much publicity for the program as we need to fill the 200 + seats. We (HCAP & PNHP members) are looking for all to help (each of you) with publicity.

Although the program is free and open, we will encounter travel charges for Conyers and perhaps an assistant Wash DC to Philly to Detroit. Therefore we will be passing the hat there to pay for the trip.

Thanks again and please mark your calendars and get the word out.

MA, Medford: New Strategies for the Obama Era

The Obama Administration and Congress will deliver some of changes that we and the world need, but powerful grassroots pressure on the new Administration and Congress will be required if our hopes for change are to be realized.

To provide clear and profound visions, campaigns, and movements for change, the American Friends Service Committee, Tufts University's Peace and Justice Studies Program, and a growing number of co-sponsoring organizations have organized "New Strategies for the Obama Era: Are You Ready?"

This New England-wide, multi-generational movement conference will be held the weekend of March 27-29. "New Strategies" will provide strategies, information, analysis, campaigns, resources and networking essential to build the movements needed to impact and lead Washington. As the slogan has it, When the people lead, the leaders will follow.
