WASHINGTON, DC —The Committee on Energy and Commerce will hold a hearing titled, “Energy Efficiency: Complementary Polices for Climate Legislation” on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, in 2322 Rayburn House Office Building. As Congress crafts comprehensive climate and energy legislation, it is critical to understand the vital role of energy efficiency in achieving climate change and energy policy objectives. This hearing will explore energy efficiency policies that could be incorporated into climate and energy legislation.

We who continue to work for peace in Iraq and Afghanistan must make our voices heard against the vicious racism displayed by the New York Post in its recent cartoon. The fight for peace cannot be separated from the fight for justice.

The cartoon printed in Wednesday's New York Post depicts 2 white cops who have just shot a monkey saying "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." On the previous page, there is a picture of President Obama signing the stimulus bill. Given the historic racist imagery depicting black people as monkeys, there is no way to construe this as anything but a revoltingly racist attack on the President.

Twenty-three peace groups (including Northwest Greens) will hold an Afghanistan Withdrawal Peace Event from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, near Senator Arlen Specter's home on West Schoolhouse Lane (at Vaux Street) in East Falls. They want Specter to cut off funding for the U.S. occupation of Iraq and to bring the troops home, now.

On February 15, 1989, the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan after a 10-year occupation with 100,000 soldiers. During their occupation, more than 14,000 Soviet soldiers were killed by the Afghan mujahideen resistance.

Individuals for Justice will gather each Thursday across from the Federal Building at High Noon to demand the arrest, indictment and incarceration of all of the major players in the bush Administration.

This protest is to demand the Obama Administration bring all the war criminals to “Justice.”

FL: Daytona 500 Anti-War Protest This Sunday

Central Florida Veterans for Peace is doing a protest/public-awareness action out at Daytona Beach Speedway during the Daytona 500 this Sunday, February 15th, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM. Sadly, this is already the 4th year that we are doing such an action out at the Speedway to call for the troops being brought home and those in Washington responsible for sending them there to die for a lie in the first place to be fully investigated and prosecuted by the law which the soldiers take an oath to defend.

As part of the 100 Days Campaign, we have been holding a daily vigil from 11am-1pm, Monday thru Friday, at the White House.

On February 12 at 8 a.m, we will gather for a presence at the Lincoln Memorial. Every year since the Memorial was dedicated, dignitaries, diplomats, and citizens have assembled in the chamber to honor Abraham
Lincoln on the day of his birth.

A guest speaker will read the Gettysburg Address. We will maintain a silent and somber presence, with orange jump suits, signs, and leaflets from 8am-9am and then head to our regular vigil at the White House (with a stop along the way for breakfast).
