Countdown To Withdrawl

The Peace Coalition Of Brevard

April 8, 2009

For Immediate Release
Local Contact: Vicki Impoco 321-720-3520
Peace Coalition Of Brevard
Florida State Coordinator AFSC - EYES WIDE OPEN and COST OF WAR Exhibits

Will the Iraq War end in 1,000 Days?
The Peace Coalition Of Brevard Joins National Quaker Group - Picks 6th Anniversary of Baghdad’s Fall to Launch CountdownToWithdrawal.Org

Melbourne Florida - The Peace Coalition Of Brevard joins The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) to observe the sixth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad this week by participating in the launching of a national campaign to hold President Obama to his pledge to remove all combat troops from Iraq by August 2010.

On Thursday, April 9, the AFSC will launch CountdownToWithdrawal.Org, which also can be reached via the AFSC’s website, www.afsc.org, to track the troop departure from Iraq, counting down the next 1,000 days to the end of the occupation.

“While we applaud President Obama’s desire to end the war, we believe all troops should come home as soon as possible,” says Mary Zerkel, national coordinator for the AFSC’s Cost of War Program.”By tracking the actual withdrawals on a weekly basis, we will both hold the President to his promise and help him do it.”

Each day, the latest figures on casualties, troop levels and resources in Iraq will be tracked at CountdownToWithdrawal.org. Supporters also will be asked to contact members of Congress with a message about Obama’s plan, based on the following:

· Stop It. Troop withdrawal is good, but almost three years is too long. Each day the conflict continues, U.S. troops and Iraqis die, and our government spends $720 million a day on the occupation of Iraq.

· Fix It. The U.S. has both responsibilities and obligations in the aftermath of conflict. We support an Iraqi-led reconstruction.

· Don’t Repeat It. We must learn from the tragedy of Iraq: No more wars based on lies and political expediency. Wars only result in massive suffering.

The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace and humanitarian service. Its work is based on the belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.

The Peace Coalition Of Brevard is a local organization that shares the values and mission of the AFSC.

Oil drilling off Florida/s coast

We need to take action against oil drilling before too late

Reply to: see below
Date: 2008-06-21, 6:18PM EDT

Folks, We need every Floridians voice to stop this.

I just sent the email below to the Governor of our great state. I'm extremely concerned that political expediency is clouding the debate over an issue that is so important to Florida - keeping oil rigs off our shores. The bottom line is that no amount of drilling will reduce gas prices, and politicians shouldn't be giving people this false hope.

Please read my email and help me get the truth out about drilling by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper today.

Governor Crist,

You and I have worked together on many, many issues. While we don't always agree, I have always respected you for your willingness to engage an honest debate and avoid the rank partisanship that has defined our state for too long.

So it is in that spirit that I urge you to reconsider your support of Senator McCain and President Bush's position to lift the moratorium on drilling off the shores of Florida. Although I am confident that we will disagree on who to support for President, we both should be able to agree that Florida's pristine coastline should not become just another chit in presidential politics.

What is most distressing has been the argument that we should lift the ban because of the high cost of gasoline. It is simply not fair or accurate to suggest that allowing oil drilling off the Florida coast will do anything to alleviate the currently oppressive cost of fuel. In fact, the Bush administration issued a report saying exactly that just last year, and John McCain himself admitted as recently as three weeks ago that this would not help consumers at the pump.

I think your initial instincts on this were right and I urge you to retreat to your original position that protects our pristine coastlines.

You and I agree that we should not gamble with our state's economic future. So let's protect our coastlines by maintaining the moratorium on drilling off Florida's beaches.

Your friend,
Dan Gelber

I feel very strongly about this issue, as I'm sure you do. I want lower gas prices like everybody else, but misinformation and dangerous policies won't do anything to bring them down.

With our help, Barack Obama will be the next President of the United States, and he understands that if we're going to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, we're going to have to get serious about investing in clean, renewable sources of energy - not destroying our beaches for a relatively minute amount of oil.

Don't let your friends and neighbors be fooled by this political ploy. Drilling won't reduce gas prices, and we ought not to even consider risking Florida's tourism-based economy.

Click here to use the Party's Letter-to-the-Editor tool to set the record straight today.

I'll let you know if I hear back from the Governor.

Sincerely,

Dan Gelber
Democratic Leader, Florida House of Representatives

On Saturday Night, June 28th, the Moroccan Congress of USA held their “Unite Tonight” for Obama event at Shiraz Grill in Orlando. The event was spearheaded by Jamila “Mimi” Chami, who is the director of the Moroccan Congress in Florida.

There was great Iranian food, live music, and of course, sheesha. The Moroccan Congress event at Shiraz was a great time to talk to the community about their political interests and get them to sign the National Declaration.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the Moroccan Congress, click here to visit their website. Or, send me an e-mail and I’ll get you hooked up with the right people (after recruiting you as a volunteer of course :)).

And, for those of you who are SO sad that you missed this event, don’t worry… I’ll be having a meet and greet event on July 19th. Details to come soon! Yalla VOTE!!

P.S…. Let’s hear from the REPUBLICAN side of the aisle soon, ok? If you’re a Republican organizing in Florida, I’d love to hear from you and help you get out the vote!

Circling the Wagons and shooting at ourselves

Are we as Democrats really this stupid??? Why are we circling the wagons in order to shoot at ourselves??? Come on, in one of the most important elections, where Democrats actually have a chance to take back the White House, the DNC is ignoring one of the biggest states in the nation. Not only that, they are disenfranchising the democratic voters, basically ignoring the fights we have put up for years. All of this because of the Republicans of the state of Florida moved the primary up a week. Give me a break. Why are we doing everything in our power to make Democrats look stupid, and trying to lose another election? In addition to not counting the votes of a Januray 29 primary, they made the candidates sign a pledge to not visit the state, and not run ads. This is f***ing insanity. We cannot afford 4 more years of Republican rule. We need to elect a democrat to the oval office. However, if we keep acting like this, the rest of America will think that if the Democrats cannot get along with themselves, how are they going to rebuild a nation? The DNC needs to get off their high horse of not allowing states to vote before Feb 5, understand it was the Republicans of the state that put this in place, and try for once to actually win an election without shooting ourselves in the foot. Please, stop being idiots!!!!!
