So, they're giving Bob Ney 30 months. This guy is a criminal in more ways than one. For years he was the leader in Congress at pushing a bill that would throw out all state-level protections against predatory lending. Having worked for the banks and the credit card companies and helped bankrupt so many families, Ney will now be locked up and then released debt-free with his Congressional pension still b

Bush Announces Sen. Martinez Next RNC Chairman
Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), a close WH ally and a Cuban American, will take the job of general chairman of the RNC, Bush announced to reporters at the WH this afternoon. The appointment comes in the wake of an election that yielded shrinking GOP support from Hispanic voters. Martinez, a first-term senator, will remain in office and serve as the party's chief spokesman and fundraiser heading into the 2008 elections. Mike Duncan, the RNC's current general counsel and a former party treasurer, will manage day-to-day operations and be elected chairman in January, Bush said. The current co-chair, Jo Ann Davidson, will continue in that post... (more)

Christy surveys the ever-expanding list of GOP scandals and shakes her head in disbelief. We have truly gone through the Looking Glass.

We Democrats look at these scandals and assume the normal results will follow. For the individual politician, that means humiliation, resignation, and exile to oblivion. Then his closest colleagues are exposed and follow the same trajectory: humiliation, resignation, and exile. Then the party hangs its head in shame, removes all bad apples, and returns to the path of God.

Republican = Corruption

From USA Today:

Rep. Ney to temporarily cede panel chair WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Bob Ney, an Ohio Republican implicated in a lobbying corruption investigation, said Sunday he will step aside temporarily as chairman of the House Administration Committee. "Unfortunately it has become clear to me in recent days that the false allegations made against me have become a distraction to the important work of the House Republican Conference and the important work that remains ahead for the House Administration Committee," Ney said in a written statement.

Seeking to top the criminal cruelty of the bankruptcy bill and the corruption scandals already swirling around Rep. Bob Ney, while simultaneously outdoing the White House in the way of grabbing power from states and cities, Ney and his fellow conspirators on the Hill are pushing a Federal Loan Shark Protection Act to shred all state and local laws against predatory lending. This has been in the works for years -- but so was the bankruptcy bill. They can pass this thing. Get Info and take action here: http://www.responsiblelending.org/

From CREW:

Washington, DC – Earlier today [Aug. 11], lobbyist Jack Abramoff was indicted for bank fraud in connection with his 2000 purchase of the SunCruz gambling ships from Greek millionaire Gus Boulis. To finance the purchase, Abramoff and his partner Adam Kidan were required by Foothill Capitol to put up $23 million in cash to secure the loan. Abramoff and Kidan signed sworn documents, provided to Foothill Capitol at closing, attesting that they had paid Boulis the $23 million. In fact, Abramoff and Kidan never paid Boulis and by October 2000, Boulis was threatening to sue. In January 2001, Boulis did file suit, but in February 2001, he was murdered in an unsolved gang-land style homicide.
