Corporate Personhood Cannot Withstand Organized Persons

There are many schemes now for undoing the doctrines under which corporations claim constitutional rights and bribery is deemed constitutionally protected "speech." Every single one of these schemes depends on a massive movement of public pressure all across the homeland formerly known as the United States of America. With such a movement, few of the schemes can fail. Without it, we're just building castles in the air. Nonetheless, the best scheme can best facilitate the organizing of the movement.

24 Items Not to Hoard

1. Toilet Paper. Instead of hoarding toilet paper for the coming disaster and anarchy that should never be out of your mind if you want to remain easily manipulable by cynical demagogues, invest in providing clean and accessible bathrooms for the homeless. This will radically improve the lives of millions of Americans and, as a happy side effect, make it much easier for us to engage in long-term demonstrations and nonviolent resistance actions in public places.

2. Paper Towels. Rather than quietly stocking up on paper towels before the riff raff figure out your secrets and buy out the entire endangered national supply of this critical survival tool, bring all of your paper towels and all of your friends to a community clean-up of every scrubable surface surrounding a nearby fossil fuel burning facility. As a bonus, you'll get to meet some people and together you'll feel less terrified.

I stopped by a corporate chain bookstore this week and checked out the "Current Affairs" section. I was a little surprised to discover that according to a dozen or more books dominating the display we are all under a vicious life-and-death assault from a raving, drooling mob of communist devils led by that well-known pinko guerrilla Barack Obama.

Protest Life-Imprisonment Without Charge or Trial: Thursday, December 15, Noon, Robert Hurt's Charlottesville Office

The National Defense Authorization Act, if it becomes law, will allow the U.S. president and military to lock you or anyone else up indefinitely without charge or trial. President Obama had threatened to veto, because he wanted even more power than that. He wanted the power to imprison or murder anyone with or without the military. The conference committee has modified the bill to accomodate him. Now the bill goes to a final vote in the House and Senate, and then to the President for a signature, a veto, or -- as long as we're trashing the Constitution anyway -- a possible law-altering signing statement.

This bill is a direct assault on the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth amendments. That's the majority of our Bill of Rights. Thursday, December 15th is Bill of Rights Day. Here's how we can celebrate:

Be at Congressman Hurt's office at noon to demand that he vote "No" (or to protest if he has already voted "Yes" by then).

This is part of a national effort and there is more information available at http://bordc.org/ndaa

Open flyer: PDF.

Another year, another war criminal book-touring at the Miller Center.  This time, on Wednesday, November 16th, it’ll be Dick Cheney, who . . .

  • lied to the public and Congress to launch a war on Iraq;
  • pressured the CIA to assist in fraud;
  • threatened and worked to promote war on Iran;
  • lied to the public and Congress in an effort to launch war on Iran;
  • led a campaign of retribution against a whistleblower;
  • refused a Congressional subpoena;
  • obstructed DOJ investigations;
  • profited from his own war making;
  • led the creation of programs of warrantless spying, lawless imprisonment, and torture;
  • created a secret energy task force that violated open-government laws;
  • mishandled classified information and destroyed visitors logs;
  • suppressed evidence in the California energy crisis;
  • continues to make false claims and to openly brag about his offenses.

The Miller Center is making people contact dcforum@virginia.edu for permission to attend, and appears to be screening out those who oppose the policies listed above.

But the Miller Center cannot prevent us protesting outside.
Bring posters.
