Mad at Congress? Take the Iraq Vote Pledge

Why did Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi surrender to Bush on the Iraq War Supplemental? Not because they wanted to - both Reid and Pelosi are passionately opposed to the war. Unfortunately, there are simply not enough Democrats and Republicans in Congress who are willing to join them in standing up to Bush.

What are the numbers? We know them exactly because the Senate and the House just voted on setting a deadline for bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq.

  • In the Senate, the Feingold-Reid Amendment was defeated 67-29, with all Republicans voting no along with 20 "Bush Democrats," while 29 progressive Democrats voted yes.
  • In the House, the McGovern Amendment was defeated 255-171, with all but two Republicans voting no along with 59 "Bush Democrats," while 169 progressive Democrats voted yes.

More importantly, what can we do to change those numbers? How can we get pro-war Democrats and Republicans to change and vote against the war?

We thought we sent Congress a loud-and-clear message in 2006 when we swept pro-war Republicans out and swept anti-war Democrats in. Unfortunately a majority in Congress didn't get the message, so we have to do it again in 2008.

And the time to start is now. Every pro-war member of Congress knows (s)he will face an angry anti-war majority of voters next November, but the sooner they feel the heat, the greater the odds they will see the light and change their position.

If we start now, we can recruit outstanding candidates and organize ourselves to support those candidates. We can put bumper stickers on our cars, signs on our lawns, spread the word to our neighbors and friends, and help raise the money our candidates need to run effective campaigns.

Of course all of us at Democrats.com will work to defeat pro-war Republicans. But this time we will also have to challenge pro-war "Bush Democrats." That means we have to recruit aggressive progressive Democrats to challenge these "Bush Democrats" in primaries.

And we can test our strength right away because there are two special elections this summer, both in solid Democratic seats: CA-37, following the death of Juanita Millender MacDonald (June 26), and  MA-05, following the retirement of Marty Meehan (Sept. 24).

If you want to help us sweep anti-war Republicans and Democrats out of Congress, we have a simple request: sign our Iraq Vote Pledge and forward it to a couple of friends. Our strength is measured by our numbers, so it would be tremendous to get 100,000 voters to sign our pledge.

In the coming days, we will put more "meat" on the bones of our strategy - so sign up now and we'll keep you posted!

Mad at Congress?

Pelosi and Reid did have a choice. Don't fund the war. There's the choice. Put bush on the defensive. If they're going to keep caving into bush, then stop wasting time with this nonsense. If they think they're showing bush to be the bad guy, they're wrong. It's backfiring. People like me are fed up with them.

"Choices" in any legislative

"Choices" in any legislative body depend upon the number of votes a sponsor introducing a bill can count on. The House and the Senate are no different from a City Council in that respect.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid can not end the war on Iraq by themselves, as some people seem to think. If we don't do our part, and convince ALL Democrats, along with the required number of Republicans, to vote their hearts, and NOT their purses, neither body can override a presidential veto. That single "vote" by Dubya, and the tie-breaker vote by Cheney, are more powerful than all of the non-DLC Democratic votes combined.

Don't place all of the blame on Reid and Pelosi, rather place most of it where it belongs -- on the DLC "centrist" neocon-enablers, and the puppet Republicans. This fight did NOT stop with the November, 2006 elections, and we still have much work to do.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid can not end the war on Iraq by themselves>>>>>

Didn't say they could; however, the democrats can keep sending the same bill back to bush until he signs it, or no $$$. No $$$, no war.

Mad at congress

The democratic party is dead. They can't stand up to Bush with a majority in both houses. The only people in this nation who still like George are his parents and I'm not so sure about one of them. And Bush still gets his blood money. With the cave in to Bush on spending for more killing, it is obvious that none of the legislation that is needed to put this country back on the right track has a snow balls chance in hell of passing. I think it is time for progressive democrats to look for a new party. One that will truly protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, not just give it lip service.

Bernie Ward of KGO has been on a rant for the first hour...

on this vote for the spending bill. He has really exploded. His show runs another 2 hours. http://www.kgo.com He has called for phone calls, emails, and most importantly, FAXES, to both Pelosi and Reid. The answering machines for both are full at this time. For those of you with FAX capability, find the numbers for both Washington and their local offices. Not only does this bill continue the funding for the war, it allows the increase in troop strength to 200,000 military plus the 100,000+ in mercenary strength. This spending bill is the result of the DLC DEMS and their meddling with the recent vote of the people. You can get Bernie live on the site. This is why Hoyer was named whip instead of Murtha. The one thing Nancy could have done is not to send the bill back to Bush. She did vote against this bill...but that isn't much help. If you can FAX, do so. You might want to email or call your own Reps/Senators and let them understand your anger. The increase in troop strength to over 300,000 including the mercenary thugs looks at this point like something we don't want to see coming at us. This bill needs to be held and NOT sent forward to the Senate. Bernie also asked where was MoveOn...so their absence has been noted. Ray Taliaferro follows Bernie at 1am pdt. Hopefully he will continue with the same theme.

The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.

It has been reported, by callers(kgo)that Joe Lieberman...

has brought pressure to bear on this bill...by stating or threatening to join the Repugnants if the bill was voted down in the House. Sounds like a duck and probably is. Surely sounds like Joe. Hope CT voters are happy with his efforts. Maryland voters must be happy with Steny. A pox on both states.

Your attack on the

Your attack on the entire Democratic Party is typical of an "Independent" who contributes nothing but criticism.

For your information, the Democratic Party is NOT just the elected representatives in Washington, but includes the millions of Liberal American Democrats who are fighting for the return of American values to this country. The neoconservative corporate shills from both sides of the political aisle have had over a decade to implement their corporate (read fascist) agenda, and a return to a Constitutional America will not happen overnight.

For those of your group who believe that just because the Democrats won a very slim majority in the November, 2006 elections, you are entitled to some sort of "instant gratification," you are showing your lack of willingness to dig in for the long haul. I suppose that is why you choose to call yourselves "Independents." It must make it easier to blame everyone but yourselves.

Form a "new" Party? The Greenies and the Libertarians tried that, and where are they today? They have become little more than annoying spoilers, but at least they are committed to something, unlike aimless and unrepresented "Independents" (unless you count Lieberman). We Democrats are working very hard to get rid of the DINO "centrists" in our Party, and quite frankly, if you are not a part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem.

The Democratic Party is far from dead. It is in the process of renewal and recovery after being hijacked and held hostage by neoconservative "centrists."

stand up to Bush with a

stand up to Bush with a majority in both houses.>>>>>

Come on! Do you really believe people are stupid enough to fall for that silliness? Bush has the veto. Democrats do NOT have a large enough majority to override his veto's. The CONS are sticking with george, & it's the CONS who are stopping the end of this war. You want the war to end? Then contact the dumb a**es in the states that voted CONS into Congress, and get them to pressure their representatives.

Just feels like total capitulation, not necessary compromise...

The attached article explains the details of the bill...

I don't fully understand why the democrats did not dramatically play the stand off up till the last minute to put pressure on Bush ... make it his fault the troops don't get funded.. what, -- waiting would have interfered with summer vacation?? Can't Pelosi call sessions as needed?

I would have preferred the bill contain only the absolute minimum terms to keep the military functioning on a per month basis, not a big sum to be used up ad hoc...

They should have put the draft on the table for pulling the time table out. How can endless war be perpetrated with a dwindling volunteer army? Democrats had an argument that would have pushed the draft issue, which would make people take to the streets.

Read an interesting article today that blogging and online petitions are not protest... so we need to physically coalesce to provide meaningful opposition to democratic capitulation. Ordinary middle-class people will only do that if their kids are drafted....

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/05/23/1387/

This bipartisan approach is baloney. The Bush cabal does not subscribe to it, laughs at it, and it gets lost in the media... so why play that role...

Last comment.. read an article today likening progressives to the radical right wing... since when is upholding the constitution a radical position.

Yours truly,

One thing about it is they don't play poker well

Remember when they were expecting a big outpour in the elections and we put it across the internet and mailed in our votes.
They had a streak of yellow coming off them in anticipation. The balloons make sense and they are cheap with a great message. Ever try to catch one, kinda tough huh? That's the reason the FATCATS can't run. They would trip all over their triple chins.
They are so lazy they send others to do what they should do themselves.
Balloon anyone? Blue or Red will show unity even when there isn't.
Imagine over 500 balloons per person or organization.
Flood the world with Impeach the Dictator!
