The crucial battle for single-payer healthcare is in the House Energy & Commerce Committee (E&C). On Monday, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) tried to offer a single-payer amendment but chairman Henry Waxman ended the meeting early to avoid a vote.

On Monday we asked our 600,000 subscribers to call E&C Democrats and below are the results you reported. Keep calling everyone who isn't in the "support" column! Hill staffers tell us your calls are "very helpful." And send our single-payer petition to your own Representatives.

Update 1: In Politico, Weiner writes:

The public option would prompt Americans to ask a basic question of the insurance company that is chasing their business: “What is it that you guys do, exactly?”

Insurance companies don’t really do anything to make people healthier. They need to be efficient gatekeepers on behalf of their shareholders. Profits at 10 of the country’s largest health insurance companies rose 428 percent from 2000 to 2007...

Implicit in the Democratic plan — and the Republican opposition to it — is a tacit recognition that single-payer health plans like Medicare are the best way to go. I want to engage in this debate and will offer a single-payer plan to a vote as my colleagues and I mark up the health care bill

They were disappointed in this system and made a valid point.  These Senators passing law say they are representing their constituents and take only their calls, however when they are passing laws/voting on national issues, these out of state callers should be heard, as the laws effect them also.

Politicians pass policy

And what they pass

Effects me

It's up to US to set US free

Americans, that's who WE be!

We need to petition that any sites paid for by the voters through the representatives for contact, should not be censored to other voters out of state or district. They are voting for national laws and we are the nationals!\

It made sense to me since I've even run into this in our own party with Pelosi and several other Dems.  We told them and they changed their policy on their sites and now relay messages to other representatives on bills and issues effecting ALL voters.

My calls on HR 676

I called each one of these representatives. I asked them to support Single Payer Healthcare, specifically HR 676.

Some asked for my address or state or zip code. I was told by one office that these calls "are non logged into the system" and therefore disrecarded based on district. However, many encouraged my comments and seemed enthusiastic about passing my opinions on.

Please call at least a few of these representatives, no matter what district you live in. I simply cannot believe that if enough of us call, our efforts will be disregarded.

I am also going to check out the Single Payer Petition listed above!

Thanks to everyone for all their help!

Freedom of Speech isn't free either.

Obama's ideas about Healthcare Disappointing

I watched the Presidential Press Conference last night and understand he is promoting an overhaul of the the current system to get rid of the waste, and making insurance affordable for 98-99% of all US citizens. And the emphasis is on preventive health care, like Kaiser and other HMO's.

Unfortunately, it sound's as if the insurance companies will still be involved - too bad I don't trust them as far as I can throw them! The Clintons managed this (convincing the insurance companies to provide affordable health insurance for most Americans) behind the scenes and without all this "hoopla".

I understand he has a lot to do, being left with what he has been left with, and a lot to proove, but I really had hoped for single payer. This compromise, and the crying and whining about what a tough job he's had of it, makes him look weak. Obama is not proving to be what I had hoped for in a President or a Presidential Administration... :-(

Our Dems like Pelosi and Reid, don't want to put it on the table. Judging from their record, they don't put much at all, on the table.

Time to take the table back and put our sh8 on it. I don't know why they aren't on the same page, but I suspect it's because it doesn't effect them. They're families are covered. Maybe WE the People should demand on the ballot this election the Single Payer option in a 50 state strategy like Doctor Dean.
That or either "revoke Congress and the Senate's healthcare by ballot.

If Prop 8 can pass, this most certainly will also.

Let's get it started through the Legislative offices of the mayors and Governors.

I can't say I'm surprised by Obama since I never trusted him. All you had to do was read his books to know he was not a real liberal. But I am surprised that THIS organization is not organizing to send emails to Obama telling him he is a traitor and to stand by a public option. He won't get my vote next time unless the republican is truly horrible and you guys won't get any more of my money unless you start a last minute outcry for a public option. As long as even the public option is off the table, why don't you at least try for a single payer petition!

I support health care reform, because leaving one's health to the care of CEO's, stands between me and my doctors and nurses. The people who are complaining the loudest are those among us who are healthy. To NOT change the current sick system before Congress' vacation in August - is a violation of my rights as an American citizen and tax payer to achieve prosperity, health and happiness which I want to do; but can't live my potential because I am unable to rely on a doctor for help. There IS no more waiting, Democrats have 60% of the vote - take and change the way this monopoly game exists for far too many of us!

Congresswoman Schakowsky

Want to meet our members? Click 'Join' above!

Congresswoman Schakowsky has been a proponent of single payer for years, but in an interview on Real News (search on You tube) at the end of June she backpeddled quite a bit and suggested that the reason was that they "did a poll" and PEOPLE were saying they wanted a choice of insurance and medicare patients didn't want to "lose what they had." (Lose by enhancing and expanding medicare?? and with Obama wanting to take money OUT of medicare to pay for a tiny public option).

I contacted her DC office to find out what poll she was referring to since that's not in any I've seen. They responded and promised to get it to me but it's over week and they haven't identified the poll. To me this was likely an inaccurate interpretation of the polls on public option having a somewhat higher number than those on a government single payer system like medicare. It hurt the cause much more than people saying it's not politically feasible and wasn't an accurate representation of the polls...so I would question where she is at this point. I have encouraged people in her district to call and tell her "Yes, people DO want single payer." I'll be interested on how she votes and wish her number was listed to pressure her.

Addendum: I found her number and called to see if they would say she is supporting Weiner's amendment and they were non-committal. I encouraged her to support it. I also wrote her health person that I've been corresponding with to see what "polls" Jan was talking about when she said "people are telling us they prefer a public option." I still haven't gotten that information but did write to tell them people want real health reform--single payer--not just be coerced into buying insurance and then calling that reform.

Single Payer

  • duffmon's picture
    duffmon
Want to meet our members? Click 'Join' above!

Single-payer is the change Obama promised us and only single-payer will work! Any other option will only play into the hands of the insurance and chem. companies. If Single payer is Socialist, then let’s get rid of the Police, Post office, libraries and fire departments and then let’s talk about Socialist programs.

NO, I thought not! Those are government run programs and no one would want them stopped or do they?

Billions to Wall Street investors, Bankers and Loan sharks just so they don't have to lose any money on the homes they have control of, but not one penny for the working poor losing their homes. And if they did get alittle help; we can be assured there would be lots of restrictions about whom and how the monies could be used. But NOT ONE RESTRICTION FOR THE BANKING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! Or lets just call them by their rightful name THIEVES.

And after Obama's Presidentcy he will go to work for a Insurance Company

President Obama is in the pockets of the Wall Street investors and Bankers and will not fight for us! What Obama is doing is letting others fight his fight and then when it doesn't change to anything other then Multi-payer for profit with a new taxing of uninsured!

“The only thing new in the bill will be; every person in America will have to be insured or fined when they need health care!”

A big win win for the insurance, chem. companies and a TAX (yes TAX) on the backs of the poor and uninsured.

This whole charade is just to pass a bill to force Americans into a mandatory insurance program.

President Obama will act disappointed when the single payer and public option bill fails to be any real CHANGE or help for the real people of America!, but rest assured Obama’s pockets with be a lot fuller after this bill passes with benefits for the Insurance and Chemical Companies!

O-yea, and lets not forget for the most part the greedy Politicians; their pockets and bank accounts will be over flowing.

This is not the fight which will end the health care debacle in the United States of America. The fight will have to be fought again and again until we win real heathcare reform for all.

Then have the media put the question to the public

  • KimJones's picture
    KimJones

Then the public can blog or text A or B for Single Payer Healthcare. The stations to hit are Rachel Maddow's ED, Chris Mathews, Jack Cafferty, and Even Fox. If they don't use the spinny smeary "Obama Care" name, they may get a truthful poll.
The question could be like this:

If the American People could all be covered by healthcare, with a 1-3% health tax, across the board, would you be willing to have Single Payer?
A=yes
B=no

That challenge would perk up the reporters ears to just put the Dems and REporkagins on the spot to see in plain English the Democracy oF the voters.

He's been on the right page all along, but everytime he brings something to the table, The party of NO, and health insurance companies start the media blitz.
We need to call this the Healthcare Campaign for Voters, as this is a battle that WE the people must not lose.

OUR CHILDREN'S lives are at risk, not the rich.
They could care less or give a flying fig about us.
Just listen to them quoting prices, as if it's about the money. Hell they already put us in a debt, since WE are (not them) sacrificing, cutting back and climbing out of the hole they dug, WE might as well, put in some safety mechanisms to live. It will take time and the current system doesn't think about ANYTHING but profit and bonuses.

Put a severe foot up those arses that don't tow the line. New Dem or not. They also went in with our agenda and have been there two year +, some may be on the "kitty" now like Ross, Matheson and Barrows.

The red states they represent get sick too, and they are not doing what is best for them.

Between the hoodwinking lying Reps scamming for the corporate donations they took, and filling their voters with Fox Noise, It's only about 27% and the media whores attacking. But they did that before and look where it got them for two elections. Our children aren't stupid and there are more of US than the them. They, just as always, had the biggest mike and speakers. Illusion has always been their strongest strength, but technology eludes them as they're work is amateurish, and they get caught.
All my reps are on board and the phone is only cell, and my husband has it most of the time at work.

But these intuitive fingers are sprinting, not walking in e-mails and address forwards for the list.
GO TEAM AMERICA, GO!!!

Democrats use real citizens and real stories. Yes they will work, and we need more grassroots commercials that speak to the people also. Stories from their grievances will touch and connect with the classism in healthcare.

Wouldn't it be a better back up, if we also circulated in the neighborhoods of our hometowns, the petition among the citizens in 50 states?

We did petitions in the campaign, and if we submit it also to the Governor, mayors, and government officials, we can have it on the 2010 ballot, and press the candidates before the vote, on whether they support it. If not, history has shown, the people's wrath. When faced with supporting these crooked for profit health Grim Reapers, I think the message should be very very clear, on the vote "this election coming" So lets also have a plan "B"

I am working on a petition gathering historical facts and figures and starting for the next two years, will be going all around gathering physical signatures, to present a case, long overdue and possibly a lawsuit.

I don't know who these dodo's think they are, but it's a new day. The laws will be obeyed in order to make a more perfect union for OUR future. I will circulate the petition in the fall on one of my pages. I just haven't decided which yet. I know one thing, it will entail the whole worlds vote on the subject and so it will be taken worldwide, once the physical signatures are counted.
Don't b e afraid to stand up for what is right and decent with our country. We don't want the old and uninsured, to die. The selfish ME generation, will let them die, as they have stock in the Status Quo Insurance for Profit Industry. They ARE the WRONG ones in charge. I talked to my children and grandchildren, they are even willing to pay a extra 4% in taxes to insure everyone and they are the working poor. WE care about ALL, the ME GENERATION cares only about themselves.

Selfish bastards, after they worked us like dogs for poowages the last thirty years, they stole it all back and put the "illgotten" gains in offshore accounts.
They in so many words told us your on your own, so don't we have the right to decide? Of course WE do. They don't want a part in the democracy of this country, by paying the same taxes, they demand every one else does. They get theirs through the fees and surcharges.

is that the Administration is calling for the money to cover the uninsured to be taken from Medicare and the "public option" to be blended into it. Then this new combo is to have cost/benefit analyses implemented to decide what they will cover, rather than your doctor, yourself, and/or your loved ones making the decision. The millions of retired Baby Boomers who will soon be on fixed incomes with buying power shrinking as inflation soars, will have to basically find the money to continue to maintain extensive private insurance in order to have anything like decent coverage. This is an intentional and cynical move to curb demand for single payer by destroying Medicare as an example of a successful government program. Their thinking is when the "new" Medicare starts rejecting as much or more necessary treatment as the private plans, who's going to think that a government plan for all will be an improvement? This proposed "public option" is a cruel and shameful hoax.

The only conscionable thing to do now is to support single payer as hard as you can. And this is what I'm telling the committee members.

Rep. Capps is a NO.

Just got off w/ a staff member who thinks the Administration's proposed "public option" is the way to go--no consideration of single-payer necessary.
