Bombing Iran: Rove's Plan to Wag the Elephant

Republicans all know that Bush is going down - but they really don't care since Bush is a lame duck. The question Republicans really care about is whether he will destroy the Republican Party along with himself. That's why GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio said, "These numbers are scary. We've lost every advantage we've ever had."

Bush's polls are sinking because Iraq is a disaster. No matter how many times Bush declares "victory" (or a "plan for victory"), Americans will wake up the next day to more reports of bombings and murder. Even Ambassador Khalilzad warned Friday that "polarization along sectarian lines" was intensifying and "a sectarian war in Iraq" could draw in neighboring countries, "affecting the entire region."

So what will Karl Rove do to prevent Iraq from destroying the GOP? According to an important new article in the New Yorker by Seymour Hersh, Rove is planning war with Iran.

There is a growing conviction among members of the United States military, and in the international community, that President Bush’s ultimate goal in the nuclear confrontation with Iran is regime change. Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has challenged the reality of the Holocaust and said that Israel must be “wiped off the map.” Bush and others in the White House view him as a potential Adolf Hitler, a former senior intelligence official said. “That’s the name they’re using. They say, ‘Will Iran get a strategic weapon and threaten another world war?’ ”

Obviously bombing Iran is utter insanity. Iran has three times as many people as Iraq, and a much more powerful military since it was not defeated by the US and then kept under sanctions for a decade like Iraq. Iran's democracy sucks (just like ours!), but Iranians do support their government and will fight the U.S. with every weapon they have, both in Iran and around the world.

But the negative consequences of war don't matter to Karl Rove, as long as he gets to control the TV coverage and the narrative. So now we know what it will be: "Bush v. Hitler."

We must stop this insanity. Call your Senators and Representatives and say "Absolutely No War With Iran!"
