REUTERS -- By the end of the year, up to four U.S. aircraft carriers are expected to be within striking distance of Iraq, and their deployment could signal the earliest opportunity for a strike on Iraq.

Navy officials said two Nimitz-class carrier battle groups, the George Washington and the Abraham Lincoln, are already in the region, reports Reuters.

The Nimitz-class Harry Truman and the Kitty Hawk-class Constellation carrier groups are to relieve them in November and December, respectively.

Assuming the Washington and Lincoln stay in the Persian Gulf beyond their six-month deployments, the four carrier groups will combine nearly 250 combat planes, 2,000 Tomahawk cruise missiles and several warships.
