On 3/13/06, Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) introduced a resolution to censure George Bush for illegally wiretapping American citizens.

Of course we believe Bush deserves far more than censure. Feingold said Bush's illegal wiretapping "is right in the strike zone of the concept of high crimes and misdemeanors" - so impeachment is "an option that we could look at." You go, Russ!

Naturally, Republicans went ballistic. Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) called Feingold "crazy" and tried to strangle his resolution in the crib. But Democrats wouldn't let him, so now the bill will go to the Judiciary Committee for further consideration.

Feingold's gutsy action has forced a debate on a topic that has been taboo in Washington: how to hold George Bush accountable for his innumerable crimes. Obviously this is a debate Republicans are desperate to avoid at all costs. But why are Democrats (other than Feingold) avoiding it too?

Feingold himself is baffled. He told Fox News "I'm amazed at Democrats, cowering with this president's numbers so low. The administration just has to raise the specter of the war and the Democrats run and hide... Too many Democrats are going to do the same thing they did in 2000 and 2004. In the face of this, they'll say we'd better just focus on domestic issues... [Democrats shouldn't] cower to the argument, that whatever you do, if you question the administration, you're helping the terrorists."

We couldn't agree more. The time has come for Senate Democrats to stand up to George Bush and the Republican thugs in Congress and the Media.

Call your Senators at 202-224-3121 or toll-free at 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641 or directly at the # below and deliver a simple message:
"I urge you to support Senator Feingold's bill to censure George Bush."
And for Democratic Senators, add this:
"And stop cowering in fear of Republican thugs!"

This is not a one-day issue. We're going to keep after all 100 Senators until they censure Bush - and ultimately impeach him. Let us know the answers you get when you call by posting below, and we will update our tally below.

A lot of these Democrats are probably waiting for the midterm elections before they support Russ. That doesn't cut it with me. Even though the Repugs will not let the censure pass, our Democratic Senators should be put on notice that we want them to show their support now, or their jobs are in deep jeopardy. They're as bad as the CHICKENHAWKS.

I agree

that our Democratic Senators should be put on notice. Al Gore and Russ Feingold have taken bold steps to lead this party into the revolt we need, and it breaks my heart to see them get no support. I was sad when I believed the other side stole my country from me. It's worse today, knowing my own party is selling me out. I've had no respect for republicans who stood by their party while it took us down the wrong road. I will be the same if I continue to support the Democratic party if it can't stand up and demand something be done to stop this take-over. They let Al Gore be stripped of his office, said wait for midterms, then wait for 2004, then wait for 2006. We can't wait for another election (and what's the point when our votes don't count anyway), because the writing on the wall says there might not be another election. NOW is the time for this party to stand up and do anything necessary to save this country. I'm ready to put every Democratic Senator who did not support the filibuster of Alito, and who did not support Al Gore's call to arms speech, and who does not support Russ Feingold's initiative on notice that we will all cross state lines and campaign against them. Regardless of what state elected them, their decisions (or indecisions and inactions) affect all of our lives.

I agree with every word! We, the people, need to "Take a Stand" if our elected official will not! I have been writing to officials for months now asking them why they refuse to stand up to the bullies in Washington and why they continue to allow this destruction of our Country? I am now beginning to be ashamed to admit that I am a democrat! They are showing no backbone, thus showing no leadership at all! How do they expect to win an election this way? God Bless Al Gore and Russ Feingold, the only true democrats that I see, so far!

You can god bless Al Gore and Russ Feingold all you want but Al Gore represents along with John Kerry YESTERDAY; and as much as I admire Russ Feingold he is not electable for a presidential race.
I am tired of wasting hard earned money on losers.
You need a canadate that is fistey and smart like Barbara Boxer, and clean, clean with no secrets in the closet like John Edwards. Unless Condalisa Rice runs do not even consider a female. And while I am at it get rid of Howard Dean .
Try grooming Mark Warner not a loser and no bagage. Thats a plus for the Democrats.....

As a one-hour member on

As a one-hour member on, you have obviously not taken the time to look around this blog. Mark Warner is a faux, DLC, "Republican-Lite," DINO, and is right up there with Hillary, Evan Bayh, the Nelsons, and Joe Lieberman.

It is too early to pick a presidential candidate, as no one of them has declared their candidacy as yet. We Democrats are focused on regaining Congress, and THEN we will decide who to back as a presidential candidate. One thing is for certain however, it will NOT be a DINO with ties to the DLC.

We need clean candidates because...

the republicans are so clean, right?

Look. Sleazy is the winning ticket.

Opinions expressed on this site are the sole intellectual property of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of other administrators, bloggers, moderators, or members of

jg, care to tell us why Russ is not electable?...

John Edwards--what a joke. So tied to the fundies that he cannot stand alone.

Why get rid of Dean? He is doing the job that his predessors failed to do.

Sorry about Mark Warner...he is a Bilderberger...a globalist...a DLC repugnant lite.

Have you checked out Wes Clark?

Senator Feingold's Motion

Don't you get it, this was simply a political move to give Feingold the edge in the Democratic Primary. He knows that Mainstream America will not go for this move but the Democratic base will eat this up. My assumption is correct in all that I am reading. The Democratic base is fired up by Feingolds move but this won't help him in the general election.

Lets be pragmatic

What then is your Solution?

You criticize Feingold for acting on his conscience, and offer not a single word on what should be done.

Are you telling us that Bush has not violated constitutional law? civil liberties and freedoms? lied against his oath of office as CEO of America?

What are you saving your causes for? What will you have to stand for when the Republicans tell you how you watched while they failed?

What do you stand for? "A man/woman who stands for nothing stands for anything"...Anonymous

We finally have someone in the Senate who is willing to stand up against Bush and his modern day Jesse James gang and the rest of our democratic leadership does not have the balls to back him up. If Russ Feingold was a republican senator and the this was democratic president, you can bet that every republican would be backing him on this. Where is the sense of party loyalty. I am a life long democrat and this is the first time that I have ever considered being an independent. Democratic leadership- WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE. Your voting base is starting to get tired of being kicked around by this bunch of outlaws. Stand up and do something or we will vote new leadership in this fall.

The DLC and the DSCC is the problem. They are the elected officials and leaders who decide what fellow elected officials will say or do.

Remember, Paul Hackett in Ohio running for the Senate against DeWine. The DLC and the DSCC decide to pull the plug on him by financially supporting a candidate they wanted; not Hackett. Then they had the gile to request he run for the House of Representatives against the woman who tried to villify Jack Murtha who called for the end of the Iraq war; that received the same mulls from our leadership in congress.

The problem is our hierarchy from top down. It is a group who secretly applauds Republicans and openly supports them with their inaction against Bush. Your vote is vital to our party and do not let your anger force you into a mistake that will hurt our chance to protect America.

An Open Letter to Howard Dean, all the Elected Democrats

Hi there!
Do you folks even make any pretense of being the party of FDR any more? Will you even consider the opinion of the common man, whose struggle has given you your present position? You owe us that. Do you read Molly Ivins, by chance, or are you keeping those eyes wide shut? You should (see Chamberlain in his role in the history of appeasement…or just ask any Czech—they remember.) Or, better yet, if that’s too heavy for you, check out Ed Helm’s piece on Paul Hackett (the Daily Show, 3/14/06). This captured everything that has made a laughingstock out of us—here you have a guy with credibility, integrity, passion and, most importantly, he’s got justice on his side! He’s right on the issues and not afraid to say so. How refreshing after watching you triangulating ass-clowns sell us down the pike!! And what do you do? You have Chuck (where’s the buck) Schumer pressure him not to run!! Are you in collusion with the Nazis on the other side of the aisle, are you completely beholden to the corporations which finance both of your “political parties,” or are you just that far out of touch with reality? Wake up, smell the manure (it’s all around you), kick Joe (I kissed the president) Lieberman the fuck out of our party and do your jobs!!!
Look, this is about more than short term political gain (your strategies have been working so well!!) this is about saving our democracy. Not since the ill-documented (attempted) fascist putsch in the’30s (see Smedley Butler) have we been this close to the edge. And what do you morons do? You leave Feingold hanging while you calculate your leverage!!! Harry Reid is a dried up, wispy geometry teacher, not a Senate Leader. Joe Biden can’t take his eyes off the nearest mirror—where is the inspiring leadership we need? We need a brave, principled, progressive voice, not another republican party—the one we already have has done enough damage!! Please, please, please…oh yeah, if you even think about nominating “Hillary” I’ll jump, I swear I’ll jump!!

Eureka! Congress is Possessed (by the Echoes of its Doeppelgaenger!!)

Look no further, I've been struck in the head by the brick of insight: whereas all my internet brethren have been flabbergasted by the spinelessness of the alleged "opposition" party in their inscrutable non-reaction to the open perfidy of our pugnacious president and his reptilian cabal, as seen in the unapologetic abandonment of the quixotic Feingold in his recent censure motion, I just realized what's really going on here. Since life in these decidedly anti-Homo Homogenized States has been shown to imitate what passes for Art (The Price is Right?) it is there, in the world of counterfeit reality, that we must look for explications of the inexplicable. Specifically, I would posit John C. Wright as the oracle of this Dumbfounded Age, and not just because I like to read his books, which I certainly do. In the two-book series Mists of Everness and Last Guardian of Everness, Wright reveals, one would hope unintentionally, the fiendish plot concocted by dark agents of the mythic past to take control of the world by first bending the organs of American Democracy to their will. They do this by unleashing the Selkie, seal-like demons of the rancid deep who tend to speak in Pirate-ese, from their "encounters" with sailors over the centuries, on the already compromised, alright, open whores in Congress, who are easy prey due to their obvious lack of principles.

In a really creepy allegory of possession, the congressional sluts are sort of slit up the middle, their rotten entrails disengorged, and the Selkies "climb" in, generally avoiding detection except by those willing to entertain strange thoughts...In the great climactic scene (no, I won't give everything away) where the good guys take back Congress and unseat, literally, the pseudo-president, the deflated skins of the former congresspersons slide off the seal-body things onto the floors of the House and Senate, leaving the revealed Selkies barking and flapping their flippers most repulsively.

This explanation leaped to my mind yesterday as I watched Arlen Specter interrupting the Feingold-Hero like the crooked small town mayor in innumerable B-Horror movies--I could have sworn I saw his skin slip, sagging in a strange and unnatural way (I know the man's gravely ill, but if he's going to act like a demon-possessed agent of the Dark Side screw him, he's fair game.) Another interesting parallel between Wright's allegory and the "real" world is the significance cast on the necessity of those who've sworn to uphold the Constitution being made to defile it with bodily fluids or vile imprecations before they can participate in the sinister conspiracy--it makes you wonder what the Lizards made their accomplices do in all those acronymically known organizations (you know, CIA-FBI-NSA-FAA-NORAD, etc) before they could launch Operation Prison Planet...The only questions left are:

a.) who's going to save us?

b.) how do we unzip the Selkies in the Hall of Mirrors?

c.) how did Wright figure all this out, or was he doing it in the time-honored tradition of Samuel Coleridge, by ingesting laudanum before sitting down to write?

These Democrats in Name Only - DINOs - may think they can wait until after midterms to support Russ, but PUT THEM ON NOTICE THAT IF THEY DON'T DO THE RIGHT THING NOW, THEY WON'T HAVE YOUR SUPPORT LATER. They are *YOUR* senators, and the time is NOW! To do otherwise is to support Bush's wrongdoing and that is not acceptable.

Senator Feingold has made a clear cut case, and he's doing the right thing to demand accountability from Bush. Call your senators and tell them to support the Censure resolution, and call the White House and tell them you support it. There are petitions you can sign, too.

And there's another petition, too:

I also read about a "banana republic" boycott. If you senator says he/she won't join in the censure, send 'em a banana, because you're living in a banana republic, not a republic with democratic traditions.

Come on guys. What are you afraid of? Are you afraid of looking like you actually found the nerve that you thought that you had lost or perhaps didn't know that you had? Are you afraid of having to get another job or losing your health insurance when you have a chronic illness? Are you afraid that your parents will be disappointed or that you will let your spouse or children down because you took a stand and aided those "all seeing, all knowing, omnipresent terrorists"? Do you really think that it is too terrible to attack our fearless leader who is after all working tirelessly for our safety????? Do you really think that it is more forgiveable to lead us into the "long war" against a country that didn't attack us and to bankrupt us along the way than it was to jump a willing intern? Do you like seeing New Orleans drown with dead people trapped in their attics? Do you want to see us build superhighways over IED's and kill all of the animals in Alaska by destroying their habitat so that Japan can buy oil from us? Do you like how Walmart treats its employees? If you answer yes to any, some, most or all of these questions, don't do anything. Just remember that you by your own inanition wiped out the American dream. Does that make you feel happy? I'll bet that it makes Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, George Washington, Franklin Roosevelt, and John Kennedy roll over in their graves. Do the right thing! Take a stand!!! You owe our dead children something. They lost their lives because you sent them to Iraq. Bush lied and many people died and are still dying.

I have been wondering for a long time why the dems are so quiet. I am thankful that a few have begun to question the mighty king who is currently running our country into the ground! Be quiet no longer!!

The Dems are making me sick

The Democrats need to be organized in their opposition. Without any type of organization they look like they do not stand for anything. And how are they going to present themselves to the public when they appear not to stand for anything? The country is going down the drain and the Democrats, the opposition party, are not doing anything to stop it.

Like George Clooney said, Democrats are afraid to appear unpatriotic and censure Bush and this illegal Administration. We will not get the majority in the next election unless they stand united.

Thank you Russ Feingold and John Conyers. May the rest of the Democratics wake up and realize that their precious political careers are meaningless to The People as long as they cower, cop out, and enable the neo-con agenda.

As far as I'm concerned, "Democratic Leadership" is an oxymoron. Please, oh please, grow a collective spine and work for the people who gave you your jobs.

Why should Dems get a majority in the next election unless they are willing to stand united against law breaking? They ARE unpatriotic now to see wrong and sit quietly, and they don't deserve to be where they are, serving in the people's house, the halls of congress.

This is an opportunity to put Bush on notice that he is accountable to the people. Isn't he?

Aren't ALL our reps supposed to be? IMO one of the problems is many elected representatives are not listening to the people.
They go through the motions, but when it comes down to it, their own agendas come before their constituents.
They are responsible/accountable to the people who elected them but many do not act like it.
A loud and pointed reminder may be necessary.

Throughout his presidency, George W. Bush has repeatedly shown disdain, if not utter contempt, for congress, the constitution, and the rule of law. It's about time someone stepped forward to demand accountability from this president. I fully support Senator Feingold’s resolution. Censure is a still a long way from impeachment, but it's a step in the right direction.

Please stand behind Senator Feingold's resolution. It is vital that this president be held accountable for his illegal activities (warrentless wire-tapping is just the tip of the ice berg), or we are in jeopardy of losing our democracy forever. If the president of the United States can break the law, without any penalty whatsoever, then what are we teaching our children, not to mention people elsewhere in the world struggling to build their own democracies? Letting him get away with it is not helping our credibility, either here at home or anywhere else in the world. With the administration’s polling points at an all time low, NOW is the time to take a stand.

Building Democracies? We have the same type of democracy that Germany had under Hitler, Iraq had under Saddam, etc. One person controls ALL government - isn't it great?

"They want the federal government controlling Social Security

like it's some kind of federal program."

But how many here actually believe the fascist George Allen, Jr. (son of that nasty man that was a mean coach of the Redskins - and I'm a fan!) will actually be moved by reason and logic? None.

Who knows whether John Warner will come to his senses.

At least I tried. And I didn't use invectives, either!

I emailed my Senators, Durbin and Obama. Got Durbin's form letter back. Shows concern for the issue, but no commitment to any specific action.

Thank you for your message regarding the disclosure that the National Security Agency (NSA) has been conducting electronic surveillance of American citizens in the United States without obtaining a warrant. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

Protecting both the security and the freedom of the American people is among my greatest concerns. I share an obligation with my fellow Senators to ensure that the federal government protects and defends the people of the United States while preserving the civil liberties that have helped to make the United States the greatest and most enduring democracy in the world.

President Bush has stated that he authorized the NSA to conduct warrantless wiretapping of communications made by American citizens living within the United States. Current federal law provides that electronic surveillance and interception of domestic oral, wire and electronic
communications may be conducted only according to the procedures laid out in the federal criminal wiretap statute and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Under FISA, the government must seek a warrant from a special court in order to conduct electronic surveillance of communications between American citizens and persons outside of the
country. FISA requires that these court proceedings be conducted as expeditiously as possible, and FISA permits the government in emergency situations to begin conducting surveillance immediately and obtain a warrant up to 72 hours later. FISA also places safeguards on the ways in which the intercepted information can be used and disseminated.

When the President and the Administration order actions such as the surveillance of American citizens, these actions must be conducted in a manner consistent with the rule of law and the Constitution's commitment to civil liberties. Even President Bush himself has apparently recognized that it is improper to subject Americans in the United States to
wiretapping without court approval. In a speech on April 20, 2004, the President said:
"Now, by the way, any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires - a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so."

I will continue to urge Congress to carefully scrutinize this program, and I will work to ensure that any government surveillance of American citizens is conducted in a manner consistent with our civil liberties and the rule of law as well as our security needs.

Thank you again for sharing your views on this issue with me.

Dear Senator,

Wisconsin Senator Feingold is showing a lot of courage in attempting to censure President Bush. It is, simply put, the right thing to do.

The questions is, do you have the courage to stand by his side?

Up until Monday, when Sen. Feingold put forth his resolution to censure the president, I had thought that through our democratic process there was still the glimmer of hope that we could rally enough of our representatives, not just to censure but to impeach this man who has disgraced our country with his lies and created more enemies around the world than even Adolph Hitler was capable of doing. The reaction to Sen. Feingold's resolution from the spineless cowards within his own party has completely destroyed all hope to bring this American nightmare to an end.
The recent comments and threats made by senators Frist and Roberts to block any investigation into the questionable activities practiced by our President, and now obviously condoned by our representatives on both sides of the aisle, has demonstrated their guilt in their disdain for the laws of our Constitution, which they swore under oath to uphold and protect as a requirement of their office. This behavior, and that of our President, has left me no alternative but to concede the fact that we are in the advanced throes of a drive towards dictatorship, which has been the thinly veiled desire of this administration since taking office.
Let me be clear on this. Any collusion by "any member" of the Senate or Congress to attempt to block, prevent or ignore a legitimate investigation of a President who is clearly in violation of our nation's laws, should be held in contempt and charged with the crimes of obstruction of justice, dereliction of duty to protect the citizens of the United States under the laws of the Constitution and/or treason. Any representative of the people who refuses to fully cooperate at this critical juncture, is more than likely to be culpable of conspiracy than gross negligence and should also be held to account for their actions. I can see no greater example of the despotism our founders warned us of than that which we have witnessed from George W. Bush and there has been no greater cause for the impeachment of a sitting president in the history of our nation.

Our nation once dissolved into civil war, and a regression into a dictatorship will certainly throw our country into chaos and anarchy and will once again pit brother against brother and father against son. Is this the scenario you would prefer, just to appease the swing voters in this mid-term election year? Just what makes you think we'll even have an election?
