President Sarah Palin?
As we recently noted, John McCain's age is no joke - no matter how many times he goes on late-night TV to joke about it.
And since McCain's father (70) and grandfather (61) both died suddenly of heart attacks, the idea of a Vice President being "one heartbeat away from the Presidency" isn't just a slogan.
If John McCain and Sarah Palin win in November, the odds of "President Sarah Palin" are very high - 1 in 3, according to actuarial tables. Isn't that a terrifying thought?
Thanks to George Bush and Dick Cheney, America is facing profound problems on every front: two hot wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and two cold wars with Russia and Iran; mortgage and dollar meltdowns; and an energy/environmental crisis.
Amidst these and many other crises, why did McCain choose Sarah Palin? For one reason: she opposes abortion in all cases, even for rape and incest or to save the life of the woman.
She has no other qualifications. Until two years ago, she was the mayor of a small town and left behind a budget disaster. As governor, she fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan because he wouldn't fire her ex-brother-in-law, and she has lied about it ever since.
Palin's adamant opposition to abortion made her "fully qualified" to be President in the eyes of the "Taliban wing" of the Republican Party, led by James Dobson and Rush Limbaugh. And that was good enough for John McCain.
In 2000, John McCain famously denounced Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell as "agents of intolerance." But the religious right got even by smearing him in South Carolina and making George Bush the Republican nominee. So now he's on his hands and knees begging for their forgiveness and support.
Everyone who has not been brainwashed by the Religious Right should be horrified by McCain's choice - and do everything in their power to elect Barack Obama.
Update 1: When McCain introduced her to the nation, she lied about opposing the infamous "bridge to nowhere." She ran for Governor in 2006 as a supporter of the bridge, and still supported it when Congress cancelled it.
Update 2: McCain calls Palin his "partner and soulmate" even though he only met her once before choosing her.
Update 3: Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert were in comedy heaven.
Update 4: Is Palin more in synch with Cindy Sheehan than with John McCain?
“I’m a mom, and my son is going to get deployed in September, and we better have a real clear plan for this war. And it better not have to do with oil and dependence on foreign energy.”
Update 5: Palin's presumed appeal to evangelicals might not be so strong after all because they believe God ordained woman's place to the home, not the workplace - let alone the White House:
The home, the family, the raising of children--it is the zenith of human accomplishment. It's a full-time job, requiring full-time attention if it's to encompass all God intended. [...]
The message is "women can have it all"...and it is a lie, because they can't.
The message is "men and women should have equal access to the same roles". The reality is, that's not how God created HIS universe to run. He created them male and female, and yes, by their very biological design, nature screams at our dull senses "YOU ARE DIFFERENT"! Created for different purposes, created to compliment one another in their life work.
Update 6: On the other side of the mommy wars, working moms view Palin's selection as an insult:
I found Palin's selection, and her calculated shout-out to unhappy Clinton supporters, insulting. In that sense, Palin's selection seems less like Quayle and more like Clarence Thomas for the Supeme Court. "She's exactly who I need," McCain said -- but the notion that Palin, like Thomas, is the best-qualified for the job is ludicrous.
Clinton's candidacy was attractive to me because it was not premised on gender. "I am very proud to be making history running as a woman for president of the United States, but I'm not running because I am a woman," she said. "I'm running because I think I am the most qualified and experienced person to hit the ground running in January 2009."
Update 7: JedReport caught McCain staring at Palin's bod and fingering his ring while his face twitched. Was I right when I said McCain chose his third wife?

Sarah Palin, Lemming Hunter
Maybe it’s genetic, but Sarah Palin sure is good with a gun. It seems that daddy loved bringing down those nasty Alaskan brown bears in a town where little Sarah first learned to alarm the local moose community. But trust me, I’m not knocking moose stew; it might be a really good meal.
Palin grew up in Alaska, where people hunt and fish. So be it. This is not going to be a dissertation on animal rights or a moral critique on her spare time activities. Moose and salmon and wild birds are fair game for hunters in her neck of the woods, and Sarah hunts and fishes with the best of them. Good for her.
But in her new role as the GOP veep candidate Sarah Palin has crossed a line, even for a hunter. This time she has set her sights on a new and unfamiliar target. This time she is not aiming at a herd, or a bevy or a flock. This time she is going after a large group of intelligent, thinking Americans known as women voters. .
And this time, as she hunts in uncharted territory, Sarah Palin has made a strategic error. For some distorted reason, Palin thinks she is hunting lemmings.

RegAv, you make several good points.
Even though I personally do not consider hunting, as a "hobby" a sport,
I understand what you are saying here.
But Palin carries her love for guns and shooting big game much further.
She's for removing other intelligent mammals from protection, i.e. the Endangered Species List. Polar Bears are number one on that list.
Polar Bears?- Really?
Don't they have enough to deal with considering their habitat has shrunk 70 percent?
Now she wants to make them "fair game" ?
She also supports aerial hunting of wolves, something I've opposed for some time.
Flying in helicopters with high powered rifles, shooting entire families of wolves,
one of the most intelligent and socially evolved mammals on this planet---
is not my idea of a sport- it's slaughter, plain and simple.
Do we really need Ted Nugent in a dress just a heartbeat away from the Oval Office?
I think not!
btw,
My family immigrated to the US from Sweden, also in the far northern regions of the planet.
The Lapps, indigenous people living the the northern section intersecting the Arctic Circle
hunt and fish for food.
However, like all indigenous people, they revere the land and wildlife,
utilizing ever bit of a downed animal for food, clothing, tools, etc.
Hunting for sport doesn't exist in their vocabulary.
Perhaps we should listen to them.
LMAO!!!
That music is brilliant!! It's 2:51 AM and I laughed out loud (almost waking my wife) when the music combined with the clip of McCain's facial expression of satisfaction with what he was seeing finally hit me...LOL
"As a Christian, I believe that Separation of Church and State is Vital, not only for the People's Protection from an overzealous Theocratic Regime, but also for the protection of Religion from suppression."
pathetic
This isn't a daring move but a purely defensive, tactical, and short sighted one.
experience
on the other hand, Palin will have more experience than Hillary (as a grandmother).
Quack, quack.
Hey, is anyone watching this duck Palin? She got lots of excess garbage in her life. Now, she's saying her oldest kid is 5 months pregnant.
I thought these were "family values" conservanazi christian gun-shootin' republikants?
Their family is more disfunctional than the Beverly Hillbillies!
Some investigative reporter will have fun with this sick bunch.
Now is the time for the Democrats to let the dogs loose on this bitch.
BUCK FUSH !!!
"When Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag carrying a cross." Sinclair Lewis
Palin: Pro Rape? Well kind of.
I get the anti Choice arguments but:
That's E-X-T-R-E-M-E.
I guess if she can demand this of women she'll also be able to tell us which is the correct religion. Are all you heathen Catholics, Jews, Atheists, etc. ready???
After all, these high brow matters are best left to the wisdom of Terrorists and Republicans.
So too, science.
Jim
Will Palin get the Pro Incest Vote?
because
A Creepy Mom
I've been curious as to whether Palin was actually in support of that bridge or not. After all, who can believe all her bs now. Bob Fertik seems to have answered my question on that point.
Another point I'd like to make is Palin has subjected her pregnant daughter into this whole mess just to be able to be a VP of the U.S. I think it's disgraceful to subject her whole family to this public debacle with her selfish ambitions. I would say the same thing if she were a man. My husband said he would never do that to his daughter no matter what anyone offered him as a job.
A pregnant 17 year old girl has enough to worry about in her life without her mom making her life even more miserable by taking it out to the public for everyone to see. I say that as a former retired high school employee who has seen and talked to girls with this happening in their life.
I actually can't watch this woman when I see her on t.v. This story is getting more creepy as time goes on. And to top it all off, she's sending her son off to Iraq! With all her tough talk, maybe this is her way of strengthening her kids. But to publicly humiliate her daughter by purposely putting herself in this VP position is beyond belief in my opinion.
PatriotMom, I feel sorry for Bristol Palin.
I get the feeling she is being used as a political pawn
to appease the Fundies-
"Look- she's having the baby!"
That may have been her personal decision,
however-
did the girl have any choice?- I don't think so.
It's hard enough dealing with her pregnancy,
now she's a major focal point for the Fundies,
her private life on display for all to see.
I really do feel for her.
Obama is right-
Kids are off limits!
Bristol is a political pawn
Kwahlf, that's what I mean. I think so too, she's a (political pawn). She (may or may not) had a choice whether to have the baby or not. No choice about her mom's decision to put the family in the public eye.
Very sad situation. Yes, Obama is certainly right about not letting this go too far with anyone's kids.
