Petraeus Caught Lipsynching by Joe Klein

Apparently Petraeus Cheney really didn't like our pointing out that Petraeus was just lipsynching for Cheney. So right at the start of his "testimony" - after Chairman Ike Skelton refused to swear him in and arrested protester Ray McGovern for demanding it - Petraeus declared:

At the outset I would like to note that this is my testimony. Although I have briefed my assessment and recommendations to my chain of command, I wrote this testimony myself. It has not been cleared by nor shared with anyone in the Pentagon, the White House or the Congress until it was just handed out.

Does anyone in America believe that? Especially when Ed Gillespie talks to Petraeus twice every day? If Petraeus was put on a lie detector would he pass these questions?

  • Did you write every word of your testimony yourself?
  • Did you share any part of your testimony with anyone in the White House or the Pentagon?

Of course not. Does anyone think Petraeus put all the charts and graphs together himself? Gimme a break.

Petraeus may have been caught red-handed by - of all people - Joe Klein (h/t Josh Marshall):

Matthews: Let me ask you Joe, what's your estimate of the statement by Gen. Petraeus yesterday, some people call it honesty, candor, whatever you call it when he was asked is this war and this blood and treasure that we're losing in Iraq making us safer at home, he said "I don't know." I can't imagine Ike having said that at D-Day.

Klein: Well you know what? It was the truth, it's what he really believed. And then a very funny thing happened - I was in the room. They went into recess and clearly someone from the White House called him up and said "Are you kidding me?!" And when he came back he was asked another question by a Senator and he went back to that statement and he corrected himself and said he hadn't thought it through or whatever. I think that both Crocker and Petraeus...

Matthews: Well that's sort of like Charlie McCarthyism isn't it? Are they using this guy as their puppet? They said he's talking independently and the minute he gets off the talking points they fix him.

I think Klein was guessing about the call, but it seems like an informed guess. And if that call did take place, Petraeus lied to Congress when he declared he wrote his own testimony. Will Congress hold him in contempt?

But why would Petraeus lipsynch and lie about it? Does he have a motive? You bet!! According to the UK Independent (h/t Josh Marshall), he told a top Iraqi he planned to run for President in 2012. If so, wouldn't he want the support of Bush, Cheney, and the Bush political machine? Nothing could be more valuable!

To add fuel to the conspiracy fire, someone even registered "Petraeus2012.com"

I wonder why? I registered Petraeus2012.org just in case Petraeus gets the psychotic idea he wants to destroy the U.S. the way he helped destroy Iraq.

Oh, and by the way, the General Who Must Never Be Criticized seems to have a critic - his immediate boss:

In sharp contrast to the lionisation of Gen. David Petraeus by members of the U.S. Congress during his testimony this week, Petraeus's superior, Admiral William Fallon, chief of the Central Command (CENTCOM), derided Petraeus as a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad last March, according to Pentagon sources familiar with reports of the meeting.

Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be "an ass-kissing little chickenshit" and added, "I hate people like that", the sources say. That remark reportedly came after Petraeus began the meeting by making remarks that Fallon interpreted as trying to ingratiate himself with a superior.

That extraordinarily contentious start of Fallon's mission to Baghdad led to more meetings marked by acute tension between the two commanders. Fallon went on develop his own alternative to Petraeus's recommendation for continued high levels of U.S. troops in Iraq during the summer [...]

The policy context of Fallon's extraordinarily abrasive treatment of his subordinate was Petraeus's agreement in February to serve as front man for the George W. Bush administration's effort to sell its policy of increasing U.S. troop strength in Iraq to Congress.

In a highly unusual political role for an officer who had not yet taken command of a war, Petraeus was installed in the office of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, in early February just before the Senate debated Bush's troop increase. According to a report in The Washington Post Feb. 7, senators were then approached on the floor and invited to go McConnell's office to hear Petraeus make the case for the surge policy.

Fallon was strongly opposed to Petraeus's role as pitch man for the surge policy in Iraq adopted by Bush in December as putting his own interests ahead of a sound military posture in the Middle East and Southwest Asia -- the area for which Fallon's CENTCOM is responsible.

OH great...

So, what's the number that we can call to point out Petraeus' bluff? Is anyone prosecuting him for false testimony?

If not, they should be.

Thanks for letting us know- it seems predictable given Petraeus' character, but well, it's illegal.

9-11 & our young peoples lives now being used for political gain

Gen. David Petraeus, when asked if he thought our efforts in Iraq were making us in the US safer; his response was that our efforts there were only good to accomplish our goals in Iraq. Why are we allowing our young people to die in Iraq when it is doing nothing, per the head of our military in Iraq, to make the USA safer.

When asked about Iraq and 9-11 he flat out stated there was no connection between Iraq and 9-11. Why is it that this President and this Vice President refuse to deal with that reality? Amazingly enough the White House Chose 9-11 as the day Petraeus would testify; Once again trying to tie the events of 9-11 to Iraq. Same ole same ole.

How long are we going to allow this cork in the bottle mentality to continue? How long are we going to continue to allow our young people to die only to maintain some order in a place that is in a civil war and our presence there only holds their country together by threads? We can allow our young to die as we have for the past 4 years or we can get them out of there and bring them home where they can contribute to the safety of our nation instead of the safety of a nation that will not hold its self together. The government there takes a vacation while our young are dieing to keep the place from falling apart. George Bush is use to people around him dieing to allow his bad behavior but I sure as hell don’t feel our soldiers should be dieing in Iraq while they do nothing to further the reconciliation of their government.

Reducing our troops to pre-surge levels is ridiculous. That isn’t by GWB’s choice it’s due to necessity. We don’t have the resources to continue this current number of people in Iraq. We, the American citizens are once again being sold a war, being sold on holding out in Iraq with no justification other than spin. Mission accomplished?????

Betrayus is a joke.

Betrayus went to Iraq with 3 stars and came in with his "report" and got a brand new star. Did you see that chest full of medals? Heck, you would bet he fought in Vietnam, Panama, Grenada, Bosnia, Iraq I, Iraq II. Well, he only has one combat tour that I've heard of and it's Iraq II. The position he holds now is his second job there. One as a division commander and now as bu$h's puppet. He's doing a pretty good puppet imitation. It probably won't last because I don't think he's going to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Not if any Democrats have the balls to stop him.

So Gen. Berayus gave his report. And, his recommendations for troop withdrawal. Heck, the conservanazis were jumping up and down proclaiming "bu$h is bringing home the troops". What a bunch of chumps they are? They would believe anything the Air National Guard deserter would tell them. F*cking dummies don't realize bu$h is only bringing home the "surge" troops. he's run out of combat brigades. There will still be more troops in Iraq than were there last year. There is no troop reduction. It's all bu$hit!

BUCK FUSH !!!

Another Bush general lied

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/09/12/mcconnell-lied/

McConnell says he lied.  Not a surprise to many of us liberals. Was this after he was sworn under oath to tell the truth to the American people?  What "respect" does this show for us or the rule of law? Colin Powell lied to us and the world holding up that vial of  powder.  What about those lies about those aluminum tubes and WMD? The hero general who they wanted to run for President? How many other Republican "hero" generals are lying to us? The Bush administration lying (and I'd say plundering for their cronies) their way into war and terrorism yet Congress holds none of them accountable.? No wonder they don't want to be sworn under oath. This is the most irresponsible and twisted group in history to "serve" in public office. The Democratic head of committees (such as Skelton) who don't swear them in are just as guilty for enabling them to lie without punishment. The lead "Bush read my lying lips President II" sets the example for the whole party and climate in this country. Even the  head of the Supreme Court head stole power not his to get this liar into power in 2000.  Will the media be outraged? I doubt it because they do it too (especially FOX).  Do I believe anything our Commander-in-Chief said on the TV yesterday? No. His record of lying is very long since he stole power in 2000.  We don't trust him nor do we think he should remain in power one more day. If Democratic leaders can't take their own power (to get out of Iraq, hold the robbers accountable, protect the treasury, stop the WTO democracy drain, etc.) we gave them in 2006 than they are part of the problem.  They bragged things would change since we cititzens spoke at the ballot box (and in the polls).  Little has. Have they noticed? We certainly have.Give us witnesses\department heads\cabinet in hearings that are at least sworn in under oath. Punish the liars and perjurers or our democracy is going down from corruption and greed (war for profit). As Thomas Jefferson stated, our democracy can only be destroyed from within.  By the way...not by Bin Laden or "Islamic terrorists".  A good book about lying Presidents would be Lying for Empire-How to Commit War Crimes With a Straight Face by David Model. Some one put it in a book.
