The Rev. Walter E. Fauntroy served as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s personal representative to the presidents of the United States, the leadership of the US House and Senate, and the cabinet level officials that were involved in the struggle in the US for justice and human dignity. He played a pivotal role in organizing the now historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Rev. Fauntroy lobbied the Congress and President Johnson for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He was the chief organizer of the historic Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March that won the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
After the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968, Rev. Fauntroy served for two decades as a member of the US House of Representatives. He was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, a member of the House Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs Committee, and launched the Free South Africa Movement in America with his arrest at the South African Embassy in Washington, DC. He launched the Free Dafur/ Sudan movement with his arrest at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, DC.
