OccupyWallStreet is a Profoundly Moral - not Political - Movement

I visited OccupyWallStreet yesterday to see what it's really like - as opposed to uninformed criticism from the left and right.

As a starting point for analysis, today's NYT article by Nicholas Kulish is useful in describing global alienation towards political elites, parties, and "elections."

The 2008 financial crash and subsequent bank bailout proved global capitalist system is rigged by and for the bankers. First they created the crash through their deregulated gambling, then used their power to get all their money back from taxpayers - and bonuses too! And now they're demanding repeal of the few new regulations adopted to prevent another, even larger taxpayer bailout.

As Senator Dick Durbin, a decent progressive, famously said of the U.S. Senate: "the banks own the place."

This alienation is especially acute for young adults who see no good way into the disappearing middle class. But it's also acute for middle-aged unemployed workers who are plunging into poverty, or those who are marginally employed and hanging on for dear life.

Occupywallstreet is perfectly symptomatic of this alienation. But their response is neither passive nor nihilistic like the recent British riots.

These activists, both younger and older, are putting their lives aside to creatively confront Wall Street (a.k.a. the global capitalist system) with an alternative system based on genuine Democracy in the specific form of a General Assembly.

This effort can't be analyzed in the same terms as mainstream political activists are used to, where an event is organized to advance a (more or less specific) demand.

Genuine Democracy is a time-consuming process. But that's exactly what the participants want it to be, so everyone can genuinely participate on an equal basis.

So rather than a political movement, it really has to be seen as a moral movement - one that challenges the profoundly amoral "heart" of the global capitalist system.

It poses this fundamental question: Is ruthless global capitalism the only way for humanity to organize itself?

As an alternative, if we sat in a circle and reasoned together, would we create a different system?

That's obviously hugely complicated and I don't know the answer - but it's a fascinating question!

Not Covetous, but Conscious.

Wonderful way of letting them know that WE the people see what they have done and WE're mad as he// and not gonna take it anymore or leave it there for our children.

THE CROOKS MUST GO, AND GO THEY SHALL THIS ELECTION.

I'm surprised the crooks don't have body guards as they enter the gaming den and rob the 401k's entrusted in their care.  They have the inside dope on what's going down and bet against the US for global profit.

Time to kick them out for good so we can balance our books when we start the jobs act.

They've been busted, disgusted and can't be trusted with US worker retirement or especially safety net savings.  What a nightmare that would turn out to be.

National Democratic Leadership

The past several years has brought to life, "REAL PROBLEMS" for our Political Party's Base Belief's.

Most important, from here on main street America, We need Jobs, STILL, We need to keep our homes, STILL, We need "AFFORDABLE" healthcare, STILL, We need Government to "STOP" spending our taxdollars on non-essential issues. ( Non-essential issues that does not help the American People FIRST!)

We democrats were given the opportunity to help make the much needed changes for our Country and the American People, yet, We where burdened with more burdens, the highest debt in this Country's HISTORY! Our elected Government Officials have "IGNORED" the Pleas from the American People, turned against the People and "REWARDED" those individuals who have reaked pure havoc on the People of America thru their quest for more "GREEDY" policies that only reward their own selfish agendas.

And NOW, the National Democratic Leadership is asking us to once again, to simply re-elect these culprets of misguided goverence, while they support "MORE OF THE SAME" mentality and re-election efforts of those who are fully responsible for the deploriable state we now have to face everyday. It appears that "COMMON SENSE" doesn't exist in our Democratic Leadership.

Mr Obama has not earned the trust and respect of the people, he must not get 4 more years. We democrats and the rest of the People, "SIMPLY" cannot "AFFORD" his thrist for spending our tax dollars foolishly.

Please answer me a sensible few questions that have been riding me like a banshee because I don't understand all the glory of voting for people to sink the economy, credit ratings, not to mention embarrass this country before the world, by shouting for them to die in a American hospital?

Am i wrong here?  All this bulldoggery for the nastiest side of human behavior?  I'm paying taxes to these fools doing this, for what?  More robbing from the old, poor and children's education for the future, to fund what?  More tax cuts via the "Corporate Party and their SCROTUMS Judges?

Really?

Oh, really?

The question is will you ask them "WHERE'S THE BEEF on jobs?  They ran on them you know, even after the Republicans from 2000 haven't put one jobs bill forth, just tax cuts.  Are they that one sided to only bring tax cuts for the rich to the floor, when  so many solutions to the economy are needed NOW by the people?

Could you just ask your candidates, where's the beef?  Where are the jobs?

How can that bill add to jobs?  How can we get manufacturing back on line for the US demand?

Can you just ask them about jobs?

My God, why are you tea party voters letting them ream you in the electoral butt again.  They used you like a cheap ho in 2010, and now they are using your voters who want  solutions to the trade bills and every deregulated people's protection for the last 30 years.

Now granny, children, Gay people, blacks, latinos, working poor and middle class are all on the chopping sacrificial alter, to give the rich cronies of the right, MORE, MORE MORE.

A pig, never gets full, they just eat til they bust, if not stopped.

AMERICA, WE NEED TO STOP THE PIGS ON WALL STREET, AGAIN.

Now they are paying the NYPD, to assault and frighten our kids protesting, and discourage them from seeing what the world admires about Real American Patriots, not mouth pieces for the rich.,

Show me what DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE, THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!

Time to back our kids, who are just as pissed off about JOBS AS WE ARE.  THEY'VE OUTSOURCED THEIR LAST AMERICAN JOB ON OUR TAX BREAKS!!

BUCK EM!! BOYCOTTS, AND BUCK THEIR FAKE ARZE SANTA DAY!!/

Interesting distinction

My definition of politics is more expansive than your's, so I believe that it is also a political movement.

With that said, when you couch it in the way that you do, it's a helpful way to explaining what the movement is and isn't.
