Obama Must Appoint a Progressive to Replace David Souter

Justice David Souter's retirement gives President Obama the opportunity to replace him with a true progressive - the mirror opposite of Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito.

Sure rightwingers will scream, Republicans will threaten a filibuster, Democratic Corporatists like Ben Nelson will threaten to join them, and The Washington Pundits will insist they are Absolutely Right. But who cares? We elected President Obama, not them. And the majority of Americans support our populist agenda, not their corporatist one.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the only progressive now on the Court. As progressives, we must not settle for more Corporatists like Stephen Breyer.

Based upon his picks for other appointments...

Obama's pick for SCOTUS ought to be:

1. A woman

2. A minority(covered by choice#1)

3. A Black

His choice is probably not even included in the KOS pics.

How about an apolitical

How about an apolitical pragmatist? Now that would be progressive.

Well Bill...this is all guesswork on our part...

the latest clear statement out of Foggy Bottom is that Obama will be searching for a strong Centrist.

Who might fit that classification and how is a centrist going to pass through the firewall of the senate?

This one particular nominee may well give us a real indication of where we are headed.

If we all agree with the nominee, then how do we assure his/her approval?

Grinch, if the pick is a

Grinch, if the pick is a "centrist" from the DLC mold, then we're screwed.

My opinion of Souter is that, unlike recent appointees, he interprets the Constitution from within the document, and not from any particular political ideology. If Justice is truly blind, Souter at least needs glasses and he will be difficult to replace.

Yeah, Souter will be hard to replace...

He has been an overall excellent justice.

With 3 possible openings on the court coming up, the GOP will fight any nominee that is to the immediate left of Attila The Hun.

Since history seems to be "repeating itself" and considering the 'across the aisle' cooperation shown so far by Obama, I am afraid of what might be done on the court.

In the house and senate, we have so many supposedly Dems who are worse than the Blue Dogs we have already gotten rid of.

The GOP will not let any but their preferred candidate pass the nominating bar.

Our far left folks are patting themselves on the back for Specter's change of life. The Trojan Horse will vote the way he always has--no surprises there.

With Obama apparently giving way on choice(supposedly settled law)for 'moral and ethical' grounds...we are in for trouble.
