How much impact did all those email smears insisting Obama is a Muslim have? The Herald-Leader/WKYT Kentucky Poll gives us a remarkable snapshot of one Bible-belt state (h/t Faiz):

28% of Republicans flat-out believe the email lies. Another 26% of Republicans have strong enough doubts about Obama's religion that they don't think he's a Christian.

Independents aren't much better: 11% think he's a Muslim, 32% more don't know he's a Christian.

Even some Democrats are confused: 4% think he's a Muslim, 21% more don't know he's a Christian.

This poll is just one Bible-belt state, but it would be fascinating to see data like this in the other 49 states.

It would also be fascinating to see how these perceptions correlate with voting: does it matter to voters whether they know he's a Christian or not? It's statistically possible (if unlikely) that Obama is doing better with voters who don't think he's a Christian than with voters who do.

But given the impact of this smear campaign, it's even more astonishing that Obama is heading towards victory - perhaps even a landslide.
