Draft Gore Petition: Please Sign

He was the first political figure to oppose the war; the first one to call for the repeal of the Patriot Act; the first one concerned with the future of our planet and determined to save it; the most outspoken opponent of the current regime and the voice of passion and reason during these dark years. And of course, the rightfully-elected President in 2000.

Please sign this petition by Draft Gore urging Al Gore to run for president.

And please ask all your friends and fellow activists to do the same. Thank you.

Before signing another doomed to perdition petition...

you might make the attempt to compare what Wes Clark has been doing and saying over the past couple of years...whilst Gore has been bouncing around the world with his one-issue program.

We need fighters, not mumblers. Wes Clark.

I have signed for Al Gore> bring him on in 2008 !

Passed it along on my email and activist lists too! :o)

Gore has already stated that

Gore has already stated that he will not run. I don't want a candidate that has to be "coaxed" into running, or plays coy with the Party.

Besides, a candidate for the Oval Office is very low on the priority list right now. All of our focus should be on the 2006 mid-terms. After winning back Congress, we can afford to wait for bonafide candidates to emerge.

How long ago did he say that Bill?

Please provide link... would like to know if it's been a while or more recently...thanks for info.

I noticed the Democrats.com poll is largely for Al Gore.
Maybe he'll change his mind if he sees the support is overwhelming and he can win fair and square this time :o)

PS Yeah, 2006 is the focus, but we can never drop the ball on 2008... never!

Here you go...

June 3, 2006 — In an exclusive appearance on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" airing in full on ABC Sunday, former Vice President Al Gore said, "I can't imagine any circumstances in which case I would become a candidate again," declaring, "I've found other ways to serve [and] I'm enjoying them."

[Snip]

"I have no plans to be a candidate for president again," Gore told ABC News' chief Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos. "I don't expect to ever be a candidate for president again. I haven't made a so-called Sherman statement, because it just seems unnecessary."

To address your PS: we are not carrying the ball right now, as no candidate has won the support of the rank-and-file, and at present there are only wannabes. Until that happens, everything regarding 2008 is speculation. 2006 is a reality, and viable candidates are running very hard. Support them now, and 2008 will take care of itself.

Unless we can regain control of Congress, it makes little difference who sits in the Oval Office. We can not re-build the Democratic Party from the top down, but only from the bottom up. That is Gov. Dean's message, and it is a valid one.

Bill...I wholeheartedly agree...

First things first, and that means we focus on 2006 now.

For all we know, some of the names floating around as possible candidates in '08 may not even be alive in '08! Or may not be in good health! Unless someone has a really, really good oieji board, we don't know who may or may not be available in '08, so debate now is meaningless, and a waste of time that could be spent on this election.

Terry

True, 2006 is a viable year for us, so we focus on here & now

but we cannot groom a viable candidate for 2008 by procrastination...
"the early bird catcheth the worm" ;o)

I think

We are going have good candidates in 08. That will fall into place, and mobilizing in 06 can only help it. But, as several have said, 06 does come first.

Unfortunately, the

Unfortunately, the rank-and-file are not very involved in the process of "grooming" a candidate. The sad truth is, that function is performed by other politicians, and movers-and-shakers with political/financial influence. If we could return to an honest Primary Election process (see the DLC's Super Tuesday), we could have more input.

When a viable candidate declares his/her intentions of running for office and has "won" the Primary, we can only support them through donations and volunteer work, or withhold our support.

I signed

Mainly because I believe we need as many good candidates as possible in our primary. I can't say I would definately take Gore of a few of the others, but it sure as hell can't hurt to have as strong a field as possible. He did win in 2000, so nobody can say he can't be elected.
