Bush's NAFTA Super Highway

How can we enjoy any conspiracy theories, when bush keeps coming up with horror stories that exceed our wildest dreams?

Quietly but systematically, the Bush Administration is advancing the plan to build a huge NAFTA Super Highway, four football-fields-wide, through the heart of the U.S. along Interstate 35, from the Mexican border at Laredo, Tex., to the Canadian border north of Duluth, Minn.

Once complete, the new road will allow containers from the Far East to enter the United States through the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas, bypassing the Longshoreman’s Union in the process. The Mexican trucks, without the involvement of the Teamsters Union, will drive on what will be the nation’s most modern highway straight into the heart of America. The Mexican trucks will cross border in FAST lanes, checked only electronically by the new “SENTRI” system. The first customs stop will be a Mexican customs office in Kansas City, their new Smart Port complex, a facility being built for Mexico at a cost of $3 million to the U.S. taxpayers in Kansas City.

As incredible as this plan may seem to some readers, the first Trans-Texas Corridor segment of the NAFTA Super Highway is ready to begin construction next year. Various U.S. government agencies, dozens of state agencies, and scores of private NGOs (non-governmental organizations) have been working behind the scenes to create the NAFTA Super Highway, despite the lack of comment on the plan by President Bush. The American public is largely asleep to this key piece of the coming “North American Union” that government planners in the new trilateral region of United States, Canada and Mexico are about to drive into reality.

Just examine the following websites to get a feel for the magnitude of NAFTA Super Highway planning that has been going on without any new congressional legislation directly authorizing the construction of the planned international corridor through the center of the country.

North American Union to Replace USA?

Thanks, dinamic, for a good find. Here's a related piece. Remember to ask: who profits?

North American Union to Replace USA?

"President Bush is pursuing a globalist agenda to create a North American Union, effectively erasing our borders with both Mexico and Canada. This was the hidden agenda behind the Bush administration's true open borders policy.

Secretly, the Bush administration is pursuing a policy to expand NAFTA politically, setting the stage for a North American Union designed to encompass the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. What the Bush administration truly wants is the free, unimpeded movement of people across open borders with Mexico and Canada.

President Bush intends to abrogate U.S. sovereignty to the North American Union, a new economic and political entity which the President is quietly forming, much as the European Union has formed.

The blueprint President Bush is following was laid out in a 2005 report entitled "Building a North American Community" published by the left-of-center Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). The CFR report connects the dots between the Bush administration's actual policy on illegal immigration and the drive to create the North American Union:"

Another interesting article Chip thanks. I just wish we could have other sources. This guy is one of the worst of the worst.

I Didn't Like the Source, Either

Hi Dinamic, No, I didn't like the source, either. But, my personal opinion (I'm avoiding that uproarious phrase, "I think") is that I would be very short-sighted to limit sources to only politically agreeable sites. I do scrutinize the content for validity, keeping in mind Reagan's maxim to "trust and verify."

Bush's record of stealth initiatives combined with the absence of congressional oversight, doesn't bode well for this initiative. Also notable is the the mix of private-public funding here. Is public funding being used when private interests will reap revenue from usage fees? Who are the private interests? There's a lot to mine here.

OK I will post a bunch more

OK I will post a bunch more for those who don't

NASCO, the North America SuperCorridor Coalition Inc., is a “non-profit organization dedicated to developing the world’s first international, integrated and secure, multi-modal transportation system along the International Mid-Continent Trade and Transportation Corridor to improve both the trade competitiveness and quality of life in North America.” Where does that sentence say anything about the USA? Still, NASCO has received $2.5 million in earmarks from the U.S. Department of Transportation to plan the NAFTA Super Highway as a 10-lane limited-access road (five lanes in each direction) plus passenger and freight rail lines running alongside pipelines laid for oil and natural gas. One glance at the map of the NAFTA Super Highway on the front page of the NASCO website will make clear that the design is to connect Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. into one transportation system.

Kansas City SmartPort Inc. is an “investor based organization supported by the public and private sector” to create the key hub on the NAFTA Super Highway. At the Kansas City SmartPort, the containers from the Far East can be transferred to trucks going east and west, dramatically reducing the ground transportation time dropping the containers off in Los Angeles or Long Beach involves for most of the country. A brochure on the SmartPort website describes the plan in glowing terms: “For those who live in Kansas City, the idea of receiving containers nonstop from the Far East by way of Mexico may sound unlikely, but later this month that seemingly far-fetched notion will become a reality.”

The U.S. government has housed within the Department of Commerce (DOC) an “SPP office” that is dedicated to organizing the many working groups laboring within the executive branches of the U.S., Mexico and Canada to create the regulatory reality for the Security and Prosperity Partnership. The SPP agreement was signed by Bush, President Vicente Fox, and then-Prime Minister Paul Martin in Waco, Tex., on March 23, 2005. According to the DOC website, a U.S.-Mexico Joint Working Committee on Transportation Planning has finalized a plan such that “(m)ethods for detecting bottlenecks on the U.S.-Mexico border will be developed and low cost/high impact projects identified in bottleneck studies will be constructed or implemented.” The report notes that new SENTRI travel lanes on the Mexican border will be constructed this year. The border at Laredo should be reduced to an electronic speed bump for the Mexican trucks containing goods from the Far East to enter the U.S. on their way to the Kansas City SmartPort.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is overseeing the Trans-Texas Corridor (TTC) as the first leg of the NAFTA Super Highway. A 4,000-page environmental impact statement has already been completed and public hearings are scheduled for five weeks, beginning next month, in July 2006. The billions involved will be provided by a foreign company, Cintra Concessions de Infraestructuras de Transporte, S.A. of Spain. As a consequence, the TTC will be privately operated, leased to the Cintra consortium to be operated as a toll-road.
The details of the NAFTA Super Highway are hidden in plan view. Still, Bush has not given speeches to bring the NAFTA Super Highway plans to the full attention of the American public. Missing in the move toward creating a North American Union is the robust public debate that preceded the decision to form the European Union. All this may be for calculated political reasons on the part of the Bush Administration.

A good reason Bush does not want to secure the border with Mexico may be that the administration is trying to create express lanes for Mexican trucks to bring containers with cheap Far East goods into the heart of the U.S., all without the involvement of any U.S. union workers on the docks or in the trucks.

Our Canadian neighbors aren't too thrilled by this initiative, and for very sound reasons. "The real threat is that Canada is being integrated with the USA. As time goes by in the new millenium, Canadians are showing more and more willingness to DIS-ASSOCIATE ourselves from the USA. We do not share their values of torture, global wars, invading soveriegn nations without an invitation, and other foriegn policy crimes.

So, we certainly don't want to become more integrated with them. Not now, and not until they demonstrate a conncetion to their stated values and their actual performance. Canada believes in democracy, and America has lost its democratic charachter under the Bush administration. We cannot risk closer association with them or we will lose ours also."

Lou Dobbs took up the topic, too. Look for "Christine Romans has the report" about 1/4 down the page. The target date is 2010. Robert Pastor, who was on the Task Force on North America said: "The best way to secure the United States today is not at our two borders with Mexico and Canada, but at the borders of North America as a whole."

Bear in mind that the Task Forces' mission is to plan for implementation of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP).

Here's a comprehensive list of the specific changes being pursued.

According to World Net Daily, there are no congressional committees involved in oversight of this initiative and both Canada and Mexico have governmental offices similar to the US' for coordination and implementation.

Good for Canada

BUT we will probably buy them and corporatize them, just the way that it has happened here.

Oh my gawd!!!!!

Lou Dobbs just reported that Dubai still owns 22 U.S. ports! I thought we won that one.

Now the congress wants to allow our airlines to be bought by any foreign company or government with the money to pay for them!

Why don't we PRIVATIZE the congress? Oh wait that goes to the guys with the most money already, never mind.

Airlines

Submarine   USS Wahoo  ss238

That is my department Lady Di!!!

Currently there is no foreign ownership of any US Flag
carriers, although there is a chance that Richard Branson
owner of Virgin Airways is trying to launch a no-frills
type airline within the US....Northwest does own a little
part of dutch KLM and they partner throughout the world.

Security at most airports is still a joke, and not enough
TSA agents to man all of the stations causing huge lines,
which in turn hurts the likes of Southwest airlines, where
people dont want to wait in long lines to fly a short hop.

I wonder if any major railroad will benefit from this
super highway, or who it will actually benefit, certainly
not the people of the US

Di , this is so wrong on so many levels!

It's a major blow to US jobs and labor unions.

Homeland Security? What friggin Homeland Security?
The containers will be checked electronically by the "SENTRI"
system as the trucks speed by in the fast lane?!?
This is a smugglers dream highway.

How many acres of wilderness will be destroyed to make room for
a highway "four football-fields-wide" ?

and last but not least the planning of this monstrosity

that has been going on without any new congressional legislation directly authorizing the construction of the planned international corridor through the center of the country.

You hit it right on the head

I think we can add to your list taking people's homes against their will. I can't imagine a highway 4 foot ball fields wide. Will cars use it too? And what about the toll, how much will it be? Will only the elite be able to afford it? How much will it cost the hard working American people? If states own portions of it what will that mean?

The whole thing being run by those who are pushing it is terrifying for anyone who wants to keep what is left of our sovereignty. This is just the next move toward the corporatization of the planet. America first, then everyone else, in time according to their natural resources.

A close look at how the U.S. government is presently run reveals a veritable plutocracy in which corporations enjoy the same rights as citizens. Only the former has much greater buying power thus undue influence on government policies and decision-making. Paraphrase of a quote by Doreen Miller

These days

one could spend their entire day, every day, running down bush's "new laws" and those of his judges and other minions and still not scratch the surface. It is all just stunning.

“That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” the Bush aide told the journalist. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality – judiciously, as you will – we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors … and you, all of you, will be left to study what we do.” From Ron Suskind's article about faith and President George W. Bush that appeared

Edwards would Fight NAFTA superhighway!!

Look at this release from John Edwards:

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards today criticized the Bush administration's open-highways initiative that would allow Mexican trucks to travel freely within the United States. The initiative is expected to go into effect this week, unless it is blocked on Wednesday by the Department of Transportation's Inspector General.

Edwards released the following statement:

"Our trade policies should put workers and families first. Opening America's highways to Mexico's long-haul diesel trucks puts American jobs and safety at risk. The Department of Transportation has the power to block the program. I urge them to use it.

"Multinational corporations and their Washington lobbyists greased the way to extend NAFTA onto American highways and streets, without regard for the impact on the environment or on the safety of America’s workers and families. Last month, an audit found that the database used to monitor Mexican drivers with license convictions - known as the '52nd State System' - has failed to record thousands of convictions. Mexican diesel trucks will not be required to meet the stricter emissions standards of states like California."

Under the NAFTA-related open-highways initiative, two Mexican trucking companies are initially expected to participate, with 22 more Mexican trucking companies rolling on American roads within a month. Congress passed a law in May requiring that the Bush administration certify that safety and other reporting systems have been implemented before the borders are opened under the new initiative.

http://www.johnedwards.com/news/press-releases/20070903-open-highways/

I appears that an Edwards administration would ensure that this plan never came to fruition!!

Mexican Truckers Hit the American Highways this Thursday, 9/6/07

This is another assault on the American worker by flooding the transportation system with lower-cost drivers.

And just think how it will aid the smuggling of illegal immigrants and drugs. Mexican truckers will be able to transport them all the way north to Canada.

It might be too late.

It might be too late. The trucks were set to start this week. It is very seldom that once such a change in this case in NAFTA is rolled back by another congress or another presidential administration.

I first posted this last June in the hope that people would read it and get active about it. Once the word was out several sites published stories insisting that it was an urban myth. Now we have to deal with it and it is REAL.

Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:20_amero_fantasy_coin.JPG

I remember you posting this, Di.

I wish more people had taken this seriously.

It is very real and threatening.

I remembered

This node and writing my Congressman and Senators who basically laughed at me. You were ahead on this, and deserve to be commended. When I saw Edwards statement on his site today it reminded me of this node. I tracked it down. Maybe we can get something done on it after 08, I sure hope so!!

Too late?

Not for a national strike.

That's what union members do Teamsters when opposed by government. It's back sometime in history but it did happen.

Good for him!

I've already expressed my views on it.

This Superhighway is a Super Bad Idea.

It hurts American workers, our environment AND
it lets anyone, posing as a Mexican trucker drive
across our borders freely.

Big Thumbs Down.

This sucks so bad!!!

I am so disgusted by this....as well as all my democrat and republican friends. Why would the government push for this when the people don't agree. this is going to ruin our country!!!!

quoted from kwahlf:

It hurts American workers, our environment AND
it lets anyone, posing as a Mexican trucker drive
across our borders freely.

Yes...i know American workers hurt by this influx from Mexico, and also so many people cannot tell the difference between an Arab and a Mexican that we could have Al Queda truckers posing as mexicans and nobody would even bother to check. Our nation is at risk because of this and for the other reasons that kwahlf has mentioned.

I live in minnesota and that d*****n superhighway will go right up I 35 through my city (Minneapolis) to Duluth and I don't want it!!!

What about that bridge?

What made it fall? Did they find out who the construction company was repairing it?  The same as those who fixed the LA bridge explosion and investigators?

The new bridge will accomodate more traffic and just happened to fall in time for NAFTA. Isn't that "special".

Americans can't tell the difference between Middle East people...even some Italian men look similar with their dark skin, etc. When they ID terrorists how do they know exactly what country they are from?  Military don't speak the language. Isreal? Britain? US? S. America?

The death squads in Iraq may be the same as S. America. Ever think about that? Or who did 911 and walked in front of those cameras, etc.?  Even the FBI admitted the terrorists were not who Ashcroft said they were (should have been jailed for lying to the world) and issuing false "terrorist alerts" (scaring old people and children to death)

One young man called Air America today trying to say Americans don't want Mexican truckers here because they hate dark skinned people.  He heard\hears them ( what a big liar).  Randi put him right. No she said, you are trying to make color an issue.

Have the propagandists not thought about the fact that most Americans don't worry about the color but about the jobs, laws, and our safety.  They blame us and try to make us feel quilty about it.  We aren't stupid you Neo Cons. We know you are trying to divide us so you can get your Americas Fascist Union.  One united elite group for profit and power.

Behind every headline and message from the White House propaganda (our tax dollars pay for it) machine we now see  them for what they are. Against us and our democracy.

Homeland Security isn't worried but I am.

Republicans must be very worried about losing the next elections for Congress.  Tonight Representative Dana Roharabacker (R-CA) was angry about the "globalists" (I now hear my word used on the floor of Congress) and the patent law bill HR 1908.  It is to give away patents more easily.  He's worried about the "invasion from Mexico".  Gee I agree with Republicans about something!

Call and oppose HR1908 regarding patent laws and changing them to "meet the needs of the world business community" (meaning corporate plunder of our technology and research).  It is being pushed through by this Friday.

Invasion approved by our government

It is not in our best interest but the few elite.  Truckers and long shoremen should strike.

Strike in war time is illlegal but we haven't declared war nor have they proven it was "Islamic terrorists" who did it.

Mexican Truckers Get More Hwy Access

Once again the Supremes go against the American worker in favor of the Bush administration and those who operate policy.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- California truckers and state Attorney General Bill Lockyer said Monday they were disappointed with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow Mexican truckers more access to U.S. highways.

The high court rejected appeals from labor and environmental groups that argued Mexican trucks pollute and are unsafe, ruling unanimously that the Bush administration can open U.S. roadways to Mexican trucks as soon as it wishes.

Teamsters: Rep. Kucinich Denounces Opening of NAFTA Superhighway

Rep. Kucinich Denounces Opening of NAFTA Superhighway

Dennis Kucinich, Ohio Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate, recently issued the following statement about the Bush administration's plans to give Mexican trucks unlimited access to U.S. highways.

If my colleagues in the Congress had had the common sense to see what a disaster NAFTA was going to be for American workers and citizens in general, we wouldn't be in this position right now. That's why I am the only Democratic candidate for the Presidency who has called for the outright repeal of NAFTA, rather than the kind of near-sighted, half-hearted "tinkering" that the other Democratic candidates have proposed.

I support the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the Sierra Club, and Public Citizen in their legal challenge opposing this latest travesty in a "free trade" policy that has wiped out millions of American jobs and now poses an even further threat to Americans' safety and security.

That's why I am also opposed to the NAFTA Superhighway that the Bush Administration and its allies are pushing privately, and even secretly.

The time to make the right decision is before the decision is made. Since that wasn't done, all of us have to use every resource at our disposal to stop the wrong decisions from hitting the highways.

Edwards Denounces Superhighway, also.

'Edwards Statement On Bush's Open Highways Initiative'

http://johnedwards.com/news/press-releases/20070903-open-highways/

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards today criticized the Bush administration's open-highways initiative that would allow Mexican trucks to travel freely within the United States. That's all CA needs, more pollution and traffic!

Not to mention our entire nation, inundated with trucks
that have crossed freely over our borders.

And it's already started, today.

This is one insane idea.

How the Minnesota bridge fell

Dove, just wanted to let you know how the bridge fell in Minnesota. Pigeon poop. They said they never kept it washed off underneath the bridge. It must be very acidic and been there for years. There was huge build up of it under there and weakened the structure. That's what we heard on our local radio station, KGO.

Pigon Poop?

Now that is rediculous.  Bridges all over the world have pigon poop on them.  Does the bird poop squad go and wash the bridges? Is this a secret weapon our Defence Department might be investigating?

I'd say poor support and repair by the construction company might be more the problem. FEMA doesn't save but destroys and prevents evidence (like WTC, OK bombing, and Katrina).  Previous inspection of the bridge by the MN state engineers, said the bridge was pretty solid and would not come down like that.  It was sabatoge don't you think? Like the LA bridge explosion?

We drove over that bridge on a visit to MN.  It is huge.  No way would it come down like that in such a short period of time. Crack yes...but not fall.  There are other supports to prevent that. It's like the WTC collaspe...hard to believe if you have any scienticfic training at all. Or are a thinking person. Our structural engineers are know better than to build bad supports. They have many years of experience and education.

Is it a "poor draw" that disasters are always in a very liberal cities\areas?  No bridges or roads falling in the south or Red States\cities. Not that I wish that on any area of the country.

We are being attacked from within for Neo Con rule and profit.  "You are either against us or for us"...is an attack on Democratic areas of the country.  50,000 homes in upstate NY are in foreclosure.  A business partner of my husband's from subruban Detroit says his street has many homes in foreclosure. Their car industry jobs gone to Mexico and Canada. Now is that good family values Republicans and globalist Democrats?

We're in a war but  nothing like WWI or II.  We are being robbered and destroyed using it and terrorism little by little...well over six years for Empire.  The DC gang are globalists and don't give a bit about America and its citizens or future.

Cheney and Bush with their gang have to be impeached, removed and jailed before more die and suffer. Try them under RICO or at the Hague.

Signed: Doubter of everything "Bush".

Bridges, like the Space Shuttle, are always built by the...

low bidder. The company presently doing the repair on that bridge was also the low bidder.

Added to the pigeon poop problem, don't forget the automatic salt sprayers that prevented ice buildups on the bridge. Salt and steel do not go well together.

An alternative addition to the problem may have been the placement of repair materials being stacked on a particularly weak section of the bridge. Tons and tons of machinery and material.

Low bidder

Are bridges around the world falling from "pigon poop" by the lowest bidder? Just curious. What was the name of the contractor who piled their repair materials so thoughtlessly?

The Space shuttle Columbia had some interesting passengers on it when it blew up too.  I'm not buying any of that "pigon poop".

Dove, three factors probably figured in the collapse of...

the Minneapolis bridge: highly-corrosive 40 year build-ups of pigeon poop, the annual salt spray to prevent ice build-up on the bridge every winter, and don't forget to figure in the contraction and expansion caused by extreme temperature change over a period of years. Couple all that with deferred maintenance over the same time period and a very real problem exists.

Another factor might be the shortcuts taken by the original low bidder during the construction of the bridge.

Forty years in the life of a bridge, without proper maintenance, could have been the one single factor that brought this bridge down.

A mind once expanded can never return to its original dimensions.

No oversight in this administration

Yes, Kwahlf, this IS an insane idea. We heard they start it today. I hope this can be blocked. Thanks for posting that John Edwards press release. I've been hoping there are people against this issue.

Yesterday I read about how the military accidently flew nuclear weapons across the U.S. just last Thursday. Now today is the first day Mexican truck drivers can come in and drive our roads free and clear. At the same time our own American truck drivers feel it is too dangerous to drive their trucks into Mexico. Then this morning on CNBC I heard Allan Hubbard say to the hosts of the business channel that it is all Congress's fault nothing is getting done. He said they just don't get much off the ground. Then he said the bills they do get done are not good enough for the President. He didn't mention how the President vetoes everything they put through and the Republican Senators filibustor so much that nothing gets done. What a pack of lies he was saying!

I just don't know how this country will survive this administration for several hundred more days! There is absolutely NO oversight. We need Bush and Cheney to either resign or become impeached.

I couldn't agree more with you, PatriotMom.

Our " Homeland Security" is unraveling as we speak.

Yes, it's hard getting anything done when Georgie vetoes
everything the Democrats are trying to get through.

He is not about compromise, never has been, never will be.

Everyday is a scarier

Everyday is a scarier situation than the previous one it seems.

This Is Nothing More Than Unionbusting

Ever since the Taft-Hartley Act, unionbusting has

reached a feverish pitch. This is why there is an

epidemic of bed-bugs throughout the United States.

The Republicans have put our manufacturing sector on

a big railway called NAFTA, and the GATT.

Yes, Dan

The repugs have always hated unions and railed against "big government". The Bush plan was/is to finish off the unions and to privatize everything except the military industrial welfare whores. They believe that government's only job should be to make war and public services should be left to the churches and charities. The little guy gets to use the boot strap method of getting by and the corporations get the government jobs and no bid contracts on our backs. If we can't fight the big boys, oh well.

It is not just a moral quandary it just doesn't work for any nation, but the neocons and "conservatives" just won't let go of the idea of trickle-down economics or supply side economics. They are stuck on an idea that first came to them in 1974. Interestingly, Chaney was a big player in the birth of that grand notion. The union busting started much earlier in the late 20s early 30s. Now if they can add unitary governance to the WH they will pretty much have the elitist empire that they have aimed at since the industrial age began.
