Murtha Slaps Another Pro-War Republican

During the phony Iraq-war debate in the House of Representatives yesterday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) had the nerve to go after Congressman Jack Murtha (D-PA), a highly-decorated Vietnam Veteran. After saying some nice things about him, Gohmert said of Murtha, "… thank god he was not here and prevailed after the bloodbaths at Normandy and in the Pacific or we would be here speaking Japanese or German."

Murtha took to the floor and challenged him by asking him if he had served in any of those places. An excerpt:

Murtha: Was the gentleman at any of those locations? Either at Normandy or any of those locations?

Gohmert: You want to know which locations?

Murtha: Yeah. Normandy? I say were you there?

Gohmert: No, sir. I wasn't.

Murtha: Were you in Vietnam?

Gohmert: No, sir.

Murtha: Iraq?

Gohmert: No. I have been over there. I haven't been fighting.

Murtha: Boots on the ground?

Gohmert: I do admire the gentleman's compassion and all he has done for our wounded. He has done a great service that would be you, Mr. Murtha.

Priceless. You can see the clip at YouTube .

Interestingly enough, it doesn't appear that Gohmert is your usual GOP Chickenhawk, having served as an officer in the U.S. Army. But once again, we see that those who have served in combat tend to be against war and those who haven't are almost always the most Rambo-like.

Jack Murtha: No Bluffing on Getting the Mission Accomplished

Thank God for Murtha! He knows his stuff and accepts no bluff. Here he is, masterfully calling Cheney's bluff.

But he's really dead on when he criticizes Bush on Iraq. In less than 20 minutes, Jack Murtha explains how our current actions are harming, not helping, the peace initiative - and then he tells what to do to really get the "Mission Accomplished!"

Why do conservative republicans try to compare
WWII to the illegal invasion of Iraq.?

They are about as similar as Horizon airlines to United...

I guess we cant blame them since most ignorant conservative
republicans have never studied either History or the
US Constitution, the same one they try to destroy.

Jason Smith, a columnist for Mamma's Boys News Daily (they wishfully call themselves "Mens News Daily," tsk tsk) uses his forum (singing to the choir of other mamma's boys) to deride a real man - John Murtha. Smith says that Murtha's stand on the war is "reassuring the terrorists" and that Murtha was sorry Al Zaraqawi is dead. What an asshole statement for anyone to make! But coming from a punk like Smith, it's even worse.
Yeah, Smith - we just bet you know all about war. Probably the closest you ever came to a war zone was your bedroom before mommy finally broke down and cleaned it up for you....again. Guys like Smith - who only break a sweat at their over-priced gyms on work out machines - are quick to cheer on soldiers who are slogging through what these little wimpos would never dream of putting themselves through. In between trips to the Mall, football/soccer/basketball games or "way cool" clubs, these spineless little worms are eager to condemn veteran soldiers who have the balls to stand up and take the heat for what is right.
In short, people like Smith make me want to puke.

Hey, let's not act like repukes! Let's deal with the facts and the facts are that in this country you are innocent until proved guilty. Murtha accused the Marines of "cold-blooded murder." I read it, he said it. How can they possibly get a fair trial now? Does anyone here support this kind of jury-tampering? Support the war or not. The Marines never gave up their rights to a fair trial. Murtha seems to be acting like a political opportunist. What will he have to say if they are proved innocent? What if this is a new tactic (the setup) of the terrorist? How will we apologize to these brave Marines?
I am open to comment.

Place a link or a quote in context.

Even without such I would guess that Murtha would not disappoint me as the guy genuinely cares and knows what he is talking about. It is a simple fact that murders occur during war time and that when the US Military is used for missions they are not suited for it may occur too often. That is enough not to be hamstrung in a debate whose outcome threatens the lives of ALL US Marines.

When debating broader subjects one drops the constant “alleged”.

But I do await the link.

Hit and run posts are frowned on.

And you are being Pollyannaish about a “fair trial”.

Are you a Democrat as you allege in your profile?

What do you tell the Marines when you weaken their chances for a well defined Military mission rather than a Police-Iraq-Until-its-Peachy-Thingy?

"What do you tell the Marines when you weaken their chances for a well defined Military mission rather than a Police-Iraq-Until-its-Peachy-Thingy?"

History tells us no Military Mission is well defined. D-Day was a debacle. But you knew that already. I do believe you want to hold the Marines up to an impossible standard that you know no one can attain. Thus you put yourself in a win/win situation. Again, you are a coward.

Why should WE apoligize...to the marines...

certainly they already know what happened. Not only the 'other ranks' but the officer corps as well.

Clinton's guilt or innocence made no difference to the repugnants--White Water, Vince's death, all the other constantly flowing charges against both Clintons. The stories of the Clinton's ripping off the White House was carried in 'banner' headlines in almost every paper in the country...did the Clinton's do it? No, and so far, only two papers have run an apology.

If the Marines were being fired at...and shot everything that moved as a result, then why were so many bodies killed by two head shots? If you can explain that, then perhaps you need to take on the 'magic bullet' that defied the laws of physics and killed JFK.

You forget that we can now forget the rule of law, justice served, and all the rest. They went down in flames with the SCOTUS now permanently divided by 5-4 voting.

Our democracy is gone.

As for the Marines, no doubt the lowest ranking members of that fire team will be found guilty...but not one officer will be so found.

This is one of those peculiar situations where its ok if the Repugs do it...and dead wrong if Dems do it. How do you explain this? How do you explain separate but equal treatment that we are not getting, even though we are no longer part of the establishment.

Grinch,

A Conservative just “learned me” that the Military’s mission to police Iraq until it’s nice, isn’t a stretch for our troops. You know, just like D day was ill defined.

And oh yeah, the murders and rapes that occur during war are not to be berated. Perhaps especially in a ill advised pre-emptive invasion and occupation Police action Nation Building resource draining …….War.

Jim

Jim, I went over to his profile, teeth and claws out...and

found that you had already sent him on his merry(?)way. We all need to be aware of the fact that one does not...repeat NOT, attempt to police a country following invasion with the same number of troops that were used during the action phase. At the least, now, we need at least 500,000 troops in place.

Since none of the elgible Bush family members have volunteered to serve in this 'noble' cause, then the troops should be brought home posthaste.

The cost of this action is $4000.00 per second. Number of casualties on our side now number 18,000. 18,000 is almost two full divisions of soldiers. Simple manning problems have got to be horrendous.

As a spanish citizen in Madrid, I would like to say that this man, is one of the best politizians you have in your great country. We would have to do a stronger opposition against Bush and his crazy ideas as the war in Irak or Guantanamo prison. U.N was created to rule the world with law, and Bush is doing the opposite, making the world a worse place than some years ago when he was only a candidatte.
I don´t agree in all the things with president Zapatero but he has done the best for Spain, coming back our troops.
I´m sure that the next U.S president will be democrat, and I hope he repairs all the mistakes that bush administration have done.

Media Goons Dance at End of Rove's Strings

Last week when the Democrats debated the Republicans on the Iraq war issue, it was made very clear, for anyone who bothered to follow even parts of the debate on C-SPAN, that the Democrats DO have a clear alternative to Bush policy on Iraq. It is called the MURTHA RESOLUTION. And yet the Murtha Resolution was not mentioned by a single major mainstream news outlet. Nor were any of the strong and forceful comments of Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee, Henry Waxman and others who stated an alternative position in no uncertain terms. Waxman’s case was relentlessly compelling. He laid out the clear case – citing findings from the GAO, State Dept., etc., that, even setting all other considerations aside, the US cannot afford, morally or financially, to continue a war that has been riddled with corruption since the start, especially when no one (Halliburton in particular) is being held accountable for said corruption and loss. But all we have heard are snippets from John Murtha - a guy who is certainly heroic, but one who has become the Bushie camp’s best-defined target. So the media is sticking to the "one voice" portrayal because the Limbaughs, Coulters, et al. have their responses all ready and prescripted.

The overwhelming majority of House Democrats resisted the Rove trap - the bogus "support the troops" resolution (I mean, who at this point was stupid enough to fall for that! Yeah right - support our troops by hangin' em out to dry for another 2 or 3 years!). But what do the headlines say? “Republicans Stand Firm on Iraq”; “Democrats Fail in Debate”, etc . ad nauseum. All are headline that were preplanned by the marshallow-faced thug Rove. and executed by his subservient goons in the mainstream media.

But even the supposedly more progressive writers/editors are dancing at the ends of Rove's strings. Like Frank Rich of the NY Times, and the editors at Raw Story (who apparently think that being "more balanced" means printing at least one Rovian piece of propaganda each day- including Rich's piece). Rich's story: "Rove Beats Democrats Again" and his comment that the Democrats have not been able to come up with "a stirring narrative" that defines their stance "is not only misleading, it is downright false - unless, of course, what he means by "beating the Democrats" is that Rove has again succeeded in manipulating the media and insuring that only the Bush "narrative" ever sees the light of day. When you black out the speeches by Waxman, Waters, et al, black out the position statements of the Out of Iraq Caucus (let alone its existence), and black out the Murtha Resolution, it's pretty damn easy to make the claim to the unwitting public that the Democrats have " no narrative" and that Rove has "won again."

The only thing that can be achieved by this systematic twisting and suppression of the truth is the perpetuation of an immoral and pointless war and a failed, dictatorial presidency. This being the case, then one must conclude that these things are also the goals of the editors and "journalists" participating.

Great Job Congressman

Murtha was great on Meet the Press this morning. He spoke with passion and answered every question, not in a canned way, but with the kind of detail that only an intelligent, well thought out analysis of all the facts could put forth. After listening to him no one could question either his facts or his honest understanding of the situation in Iraq.

It is just too bad that we have so few in the democrat party who can and will stand up to the bullies in congress and the White House. When for example is one of them going to stand up and answer " cut and run"? We know that is just a bumper sticker and a lying one at that. If the plan is to ignore them and they will eventually go away, it is a loosing strategy and a cowardly one. We saw what happened in '04 when we didn't fight back, will we ever learn?

We can hear all the blather about what the American public wants, but how can that be valid, when the bulk of the American public doesn't know the real facts on almost any subject? It is time that our leaders stand up and speak out or get out of the way of those who will. If you can't get elected or re-elected by telling the truth then you shouldn't be running for office. Murtha is setting a great example for the rest of them to follow, if they will just ratchet up their courage and do what is right.

Best quote of the week :
" Everyone up here is talking about the "war on terrorism. I'm talking about the War in Iraq."

The trouble is, it's never reported when Dems DO speak out!

Having listened often to C-SPAN, I know that the Democrats have been speaking out increasingly, and with growing force. But then, many spoke out loud and clear before the Iraq war - I still remember the stirring words of warning from members of the Black Caucus. The trouble is, the media blacks most of this out. Unless you listen often enough to C-Span or trawl through blogs, all you have to go on is what the mainstream "journalists" report on. So many times I have listened to a senate or house hearing and heard compelling statements made by Democrats that the public NEEDED to hear. But then when I hear the same hearing reported on NBC, FOX or CNN later, you'd never know it was the same hearing I had listened to. Instead of the compelling statements, the public was presented with a brief sound byte from the feeblest of the Democrats who happened to speak, while the strongest statements of the Repugs were given much more generous play.

The same thing happened with the IRaq debate. Not one news show I saw highlighted Waters, Waxman or other powerful speakers with important statements. So of course, the general public figures that everything unfolds the way the mainstream news presents it and that all Dems are feeble jerks. Of course, some Dems ARE feeble jerks. Some are sell outs. Some are Republicans pretending to be Dems (Lieberman, anyone?). But the public is not being given the chance to judge fairly based on ALL the evidence. If they could they would see that although the party has some dead wood, it is not rotten to the core like the GOP. It just needs a little pruning, watering, and fertilizer.

I have recently spent time with my little brothers in Fallujah. My 59th birthday...I am a construction contractor. The situation on the ground in Iraq, like with all the wars I have witnessed, is frustrating and dangerous. It is made all the worse by the incompetent leadership from the White House...but then again....even that is an old story. But I don't think my little brothers should be considered guilty of anything without a fair hearing of the facts. It is not that we, as Marines, don't make terrible mistakes...pretty unavoidable in war....but until all the facts are in I am really dissappointed in hearing them called "murderers" and would fight to the death to protect their rights in this matter...even if I am an old worn out Marine. In fact, I would fight to the death for any American's right to a fair trial...that's what it means to be a Marine...even an old one.

I don't think anyone anywhere should be considered guilty until they are convicted by a jury of their peers. I also believe that all Americans owe the men and women who have served a debt of gratitute, particularlly since I never served in the military. I find it particularly disturbing that some Republicans want to give amnesty to the people over there that have killed Americans. I personally find that appalling, although I am just speaking for myself. I think personally too, that if the people fighting against our troops over there are given amnesty for their murders, then our troops that may or may not have committed atrocities should be given amnesty too. It is not their fault they were sent in without a plan for the insuing chaos. Just like the girl from Abu grabass. Like she was the one who caused that. Give me a break!!!!
