A neoconservative think tank co-founded by Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz and "Scooter" Libby, that long pushed for regime change in Iraq, is readying to close its doors with a feeling of "mission accomplished," according to today's Washington Post.

PNAC and its supporters dominated the Bush administration's foreign policy apparatus and championed a policy to get rid of Saddam Hussein long before Sept. 11, 2001.
In its famous 1998 letter to President Bill Clinton , PNAC said "removing Saddam Hussein and his regime . . . now needs to become the aim of American foreign policy." Clinton was urged to use all diplomatic, political and military means to topple him.
Despite the happy chatter before the Iraq invasion about cheering crowds and bouquets and cakewalks and how the war was going to pay for itself, the signatories wrote that "we are fully aware of the dangers of implementing this policy."
There had been debate about PNAC's future, but the feeling, a source said, was of "goal accomplished" and it looks to be heading toward closing. Former executive director Gary J. Schmitt , who had been executive director of President Ronald Reagan 's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, left recently for a post at the American Enterprise Institute. (Not a big move. Actually, only five floors up from PNAC.) Still, seems like a short century.

If their mission is truly accomplished, which I doubt they are close to being done, a "heckava job" they have done. Let's take a look at a few of their "accomplishments":

- Congressional corruption at an unprecedented level (see Tom Delay, et al.)
- Despicable torture of detainee suspects
- A president firmly entrenched above the law (See Bush's end-around on the FISA law)
- Emasculation of Congress as a co-equal branch of government (see Bush's 750 signing statements)
- Suppression of civil liberties, invasion of privacy & free speech
- Two stolen elections and massive voter fraud
- The Katrina response debacle
- Finally, the re-birth of fascism, American style!

Fine, fine job! Their next project needs to be entitled,
"How to destroy, divide and bankrupt a nation of money and conscience in five, easy years."

In the liner notes they have essays after each song dealing with topics like the PNAC, US military spending, the anti-war movement, and other topics. I have noticed recently that more and more bloggers and posters are calling the evil entity not just "the NeoCONS" anymore, but are actually taking the extra effort to type out "the Bush/PNAC Cabal". I am thrilled with this trend that is happening because it is revealling that more and more people are putting two and two together. When people use the label "the NeoCONS", it is more of an insider term and not everyone who reads it "gets it". But when the phrase "the Bush/PNAC Cabal" is used instead of "NeoCONS", it demonstrates that the writer knows exactly what is going on (and that it's not a theory, but a REAL conspiracy with a REAL cabal). The phrase "the Bush/PNAC Cabal" also alerts the sheeple to the plain facts in a succinct manner, which is what we all want to do before all the PRIMARIES and ELECTIONS.

The Project for the New American Century (PNAC) was established in 1997 with the goal of promoting "American global leadership". Prior to Bush being elected president, several PNAC members (such as Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz) stated that an invasion of Iraq is part of a larger Middle East policy. In August 2002, the White House created "The White House Iraq Group" (WHIG). WHIG was the marketing arm of the Republican Party whose purpose was to sell the 2003 invasion of Iraq to the public. The agency was set up by Donald Rumsfeld to second-guess CIA information and operated under the patronage of hard-line conservatives in the top rungs of the administration, the Pentagon and at the White House, including Dick Cheney. According to former Officer Karen Kwiatkowski, who worked from May 2002 through February 2003 in the Pentagon, the OSP was created to produce more threatening intelligence reports and to find a link between Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Other intelligence agencies had no or little influence on the reports sent from the OSP to the White House.

Kwiatkowski observed how the OSP manufactured scare stories about Iraq's weapons and ties to terrorists: "It wasn't intelligence‚ -- it was propaganda. They'd take a little bit of intelligence, cherry-pick it, make it sound much more exciting, usually by taking it out of context, often by juxtaposition of two pieces of information that don't belong together." Democratic congressman David Obey, who is investigating OSP, said: "The office was charged with collecting, vetting and disseminating intelligence completely outside of the normal intelligence apparatus. In fact, it appears that information collected by this office was in some instances not even shared with established intelligence agencies and in numerous instances was passed on to the National Security Council and the president without having been vetted with anyone other than political appointees".

Much of the pre-war information came from The Iraqi National Congress. The INC was an umbrella Iraqi opposition group led by Ahmad Chalabi, who enjoyed a cozy political and business relationships with some members of the US government, including some prominent neoconservatives within the Pentagon. An Iraqi informant named "Curveball" was the source of pivotal information concerning WMD. He was described by German intelligence as an individual not living in Iraq and as an "out of control" and crazy alcoholic. The informant's German handlers said they had told U.S. officials that his information was not proven and were shocked when Bush and Colin Powell used it in key prewar speeches. According to the Germans, Bush mischaracterized Curveball's information when he warned before the war that Iraq had at least seven mobile factories brewing biological poisons.
