21 American Ports Scheduled for Transfer to UAE Monarchy This Wednesday 3/8/2006

The British Court of Appeals today declined to hear an appeal by Miami-based Eller Company. The British seller, P&O issued a statement saying that the takeover by the United Arab Emirates monarchy's company, DP World, will occur this Wednesday, March 8th. British Justice Nicholas Warren reportedly wrote in his opinion that he didn't find Eller's concerns about US port security creditable. So now, forty million of our fellow Americans (85% of them blue state residents) have increased reason to wonder whether they will be safe from a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) attack each day. Americans affected today live in areas surrounding not only New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Miami, but also near Portland ME, Wilmington DE, Davisville RI, Boston MA, Norfolk VA, Gulfport MS, Baton Rouge LA, St. Charles LA, Beaumont TX, Port Arthur TX, Houston TX, Galveston TX, Freeport TX and Corpus Christi TX. Almost 40% of military equipment supporting Iraqi Operation Freedom flows through the Texas ports of Beaumont and Corpus Christi. Soon, a Middle Eastern monarchy used as “a key transfer point for illegal shipments of nuclear components to Iran, North Korea and Libya” will directly control substantial shipments of U.S. military equipment. There are many valid reasons to question our national security interests in this deal, none of them xenophobic. Dubai, recognized as the Middle East's financial capital, is the old wild west, Middle Eastern-style. It's renowned as a hub for smuggling, money laundering, and underground banking. "Iran," adds one U.S. official, "is building a bomb through Dubai." The Department of Homeland Security objected to the deal in the initial CFIUS review. The Coast Guard cautioned the Bush administration weeks ago that it could not determine DP World might support terrorist operations. "There are many intelligence gaps, concerning the potential for DPW or P&O assets to support terrorist operations, that precludes an overall threat assessment" of the potential merger, the unclassified Coast Guard intelligence assessment said. "The breadth of the intelligence gaps also infer potential unknown threats against a large number of potential vulnerabilities," the assessment said. Even the White House acknowledged the dangerous potential in its The National Strategy for Maritime Security. "The complexity of the process for handling containerized shipments makes it more difficult to embed security practices and reduce vulnerabilities than for other types of cargo. Container ships carry cargo for thousands of companies, and the containers are loaded individually away from the port. Each transfer of a container from one party to the next is a point of vulnerability in the supply chain. The security of each transfer facility and the trustworthiness of each company are therefore critical to the overall security of the shipment. Cargo must be loaded in containers at secure facilities and the integrity of the container maintained to its final destination. Supply chain personnel will employ various methods to prevent the misuse of containers and conveyances for transporting illegal commodities, as well as to detect tampering. They will report the occurrence of each incident to the Department of Homeland Security and, when appropriate, resolve such incidents prior to the arrival of the identified containers in the United States." The State Department ranks the United Arab Emirates as a third tier (lowest) nation in its 2005 Trafficking in Persons report. "The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) is a destination country for women trafficked primarily from South, Southeast, and East Asia, the former Soviet Union, Iran and other Middle Eastern countries, and East Africa, for the purpose of sexual exploitation. A far smaller number of men, women, and teenage children were trafficked to the U.A.E. to work as forced laborers. Some South Asian and East African boys" (some younger than 4, who ride velcroed in place) "were trafficked into the country and forced to work as camel jockeys...The Government of the U.A.E. does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so." Despite these and more legitimate concerns, "Bush's national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, said there was no going back on the deal."Why not?

Done Deals
These people do what they want; they think they make reality. And so far they are right. The national Democratic leadership is useless, and SCOTUS is complicit. Until enough of the general public pulls its collective head out of its posterior netherworld, nothing will change. Both parties are so corrupted by big money that there is virtually no difference. Anyone who thinks Democratic majorities in congress or the white house is going to make a difference is in denial. Mainstream dems will keep fighting the war, feeding the corporations, and shoveling manure over the voters. Let's remember that it was the Clintons who were in bed with Walmart, pushed NAFTA, and forged the DLC's control of the party in the corporate interest. Hillary doesn't care anymore about security and Dubai than bush; it's merely noise to suck up votes. It's a lot easier to play to people's fears and prejudices than to offer real leadership. What I wonder is why so many people on this site actually support her? That's the horror show.
Well, to look on the bright
Well, to look on the bright side, you got about half of that post half-right.
How about if we just focus on the solution, and not the problem? We already know what the problem is: self-appointed DLC DINOs who place their corporate pimps' interests above those of Middle Americans. If we work very hard at replacing them, we can get control of OUR Party back.
If we regain control of the Democratic Party, and help Gov. Dean with his efforts at rebuilding the grass roots, then neocons (including the ones in the DLC) will be just a bad memory -- until the next time we fall asleep at the switch.
Bill (or Bob)
Again with the copy and paste?
I think I see a positive pattern in all this. We are seeing more and more disgruntled, alleged moderates suddenly waking up, and they have discovered sites like ours. But they are still in a fog and under the mistaken belief that the DNC and DLC are one and the same.
Maybe we can suggest that Bob consider a page that more clearly describes the differences DNC and DLC and we could link these people to the page and educate them more efficiently.
It seems to me that asking them to search our sight and get to know us might be getting cumbersome because of the size of the sight and the large number of forums that have been posted just since last November.

Vince, in Republican-speak it's called staying "on message"...;-)
Al From and his Merry Band of "Centrists" do absolutely nothing to dissuade people from believing that they are a part of the official Democratic National Committee (DNC). It's how they cling to their false claim of legitimacy, and con people into thinking that they are honest-to-goodness Democrats. The only real distinction they openly claim, is that they are "New Democrats" -- whatever in the hell that means.
Almost all of the prominent Democratic activist organizations (PDA, DFA, Backbone, MoveOn, Democrats.com, Democratic Underground, etc.) expose the DLC for what they truly are: neocon enablers. I agree with you, that for someone who is under the false impression that the DLC is working for the Democratic Party and its principles, the truth is hard to come by.
I like your suggestion about clearly defining the differences between the elected Democratic Party organization (DNC), and the self-appointed, faux-Democratic, Republican-Lite DLC and its New Democrat members (Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, Evan Bayh, et al). Bob clearly states in the Rules of this blog (first bullet point) that the DNC Agenda defines the "principles" of Democrats.com: http://www.democrats.com/rules
I would like to see Gov. Dean and the DNC take a more agressive stance against the DLC, and counter their attacks on him and his job as Chairman. When the DLC calls Howard Dean, and the millions of us who believe as he does, "left-wing extremists," they are really exposing themselves for what they are: neocon right-wing apologists. I would also like to see more Democratic candidates stand up for their rights to a fair primary election process without interference by the so-called "leaders" of the DLC.
Again with the copy and paste?
Hi Vince,
No need to blame either Bill or Bob for what you see as too much copy and paste in the entry. It sounds like there's some history here, but it predates me.
Obviously, I'm not an experienced blogger, or even one showing any promise. I know that.
I met Bob years back at a march. We knew each other online and as luck had it, ran into each other. Bob offered me an opportunity to blog about the Dubai Ports deal after I wrote him about it, as I truly think it's a set-up for another American disaster. I've researched it extensively.
But Bush & Co. doesn't measure disaster in terms of human life (reflect on Katrina, as our fellow Americans pleaded for help, all the while Bush sat silently in his Crawford TX situation room, so reminiscent of sitting silently while children regaled him with goat stories) - but in dollars.
And the dollars are there. Never mind the curious trail of how a monarchy outbid a Singaporean company for P&O (though there's a story there). Nevermind that this is the first time that Mr. Bush threatened to veto (though there's a story there). And nevermind that the Constitution (Article 1, Sec. 8) designates to Congress the responsibility to "regulate commerce with foreign nations..."(requiring)...the consent of the legislature of that state in which the same shall be for...dockyards..." (though there's a story there).
Never mind the undisclosed connections between Carlyle and CSX, the deal that gave P & O the option (to buy and sell operating rights to) the American ports:
http://www.thecarlylegroup.com/eng/industry/l3-topnews-article2467.html
or that the Carlyle group had a majority stake in CSX:
http://www.thecarlylegroup.com/eng/industry/l3-topnews-article706.html
and nevermind that the Treasury Secretary was a CSX executive before Mr. Bush nominated him. Or, that the Maritime Adminstrator Sanborn is a former DP World executive (there's a story there) with the responsibility to:

and much more...
I'm interested to read about DNC/DLC...Best, ~Chip :)
Chip, Vince's remark about
Chip, Vince's remark about "copy and paste" was in reference to my repetitious posts about the DLC.
P.S. Welcome to Democrats.com, and keep up the good work.
Again with the copy and paste?
Thanks, Bill! I really appreciate your reply. :) Best, ~Chip :)
Just a thought, couldn't the
Just a thought, couldn't the port deal ultimately be good for America? Maybe Americans will wake up after someone ships a dirty bomb into the country and MAYBE, just maybe, we will stop importing so much and start making stuff right here in America again bringing jobs and money back into our pockets.
