Republicans Insult All Purple Heart Recipients

It's important to remember two points in the latest, disgustingly-familiar attacks on the military service of Democratic Congressman John Murtha...

First, when these cowardly Republicans raise questions about the legitimacy of any Veteran's Purple Heart based on the relative severity of the wound suffered, they insult and demean every Vet who has ever been unfortunate enough to receive that decoration.

The second thing is that this is nothing new for these people. Lest you think that the attacks on John Kerry in 2004 came solely from the Swift Boat Liars, don't forget how many Republicans wore Purple Heart bandages on the floor of the GOP national convention that year in an effort to ridicule and minimize Kerry's service.

Here's the proof:

You want a look at true Republican patriotism? There it is.

To all Democrats and Republicans who earned a Purple Heart:

The PURPLE HEART is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. It is specifically a combat decoration.

The American People understand, if not those modern Republicans in the opening post, that:

The reason the Purple Heart is bestowed regardless of the severity of the wound is that any injury at the hands of the enemy speak to where you placed yourself for our Nation –right in harms way, come what may, injury or death!

This nonsense within the Republican Party must end.

Well said Jim! Disgraceful. My father's Purple Heart devalued

More Republican defaming of the Purple Hearts of so many veterans!!

My late father was awarded a Purple Heart after being struck with shrapnel in the hip during a shelling of his boat in World War II. Like one of Murtha's and Kerry's, his wound was considered minor and he was treated aboard his ship. The doctor made quick work of his wound and he returned to duty the very next day. The only difference between his wound and Kerry's is that the shrapnel was completely removed that day from my father's hip. John Kerry's remains embedded in his leg. We know that much. I don't know if Jack Murtha has shrapnel remaining--and it doesn't matter anyway.

Though my father's wound was never life threatening, my family was always proud of his Purple Heart and it never, ever crossed our minds that somehow his wound did not "make the grade." If the wound was a few inches to the right, it could have meant serious damage to his spinal cord. But my dad would never mention that.

I have fond memories of the rare times he'd go to his desk drawer and retrieve that leather case which held the purple ribbon and medal. He would also bring in the old globe and treat us kids to a geography lesson about where his crew served in the South Pacific. He never bragged about his medal, and he seldom pulled it out, but you could tell when he did that he was very proud of it.

How dare these Republicans once again defame the medals of so many thousands of vets like my dad, John Kerry and Jack Murtha, whose wounds were not serious. Those wounded in harms way while risking their lives for their country deserve honor, with no exceptions.

Exactly. The Purple Heart

Exactly. The Purple Heart denotes WHERE a soldier put themselves.

Bush is probably just upset

Bush is probably just upset because he never got a Purple Heart from falling off the bar stool and hitting his head while "serving" in the National Guard.

"They want the federal government controlling Social Security

like it's some kind of federal program."

Other than perhaps McCain...are there any other...

repugnants who actually served? Much less, injured in the line of duty.

The only purple hearts repugs ever saw were on the band aids they all wore at their convention...to diss Kerry who did win such medal awards...for cause.

People should start waving rubber chickens at them.

Or yellow scarves. That would be easier to come by, and easier to carry around.

These people are scum. Go read Truthout about how our soldiers are being told that if they wear armor, our government isn't going to pay their benefits if they're hurt.

Look Morgaine, you should

Look Morgaine, you should put warning on posts like that. I spit my coffee across my computer and onto the screen. I love it - rubber chickens!

sorry !

Can you imagine, though, a bunch of protesters waving rubber chickens?

Or all the Dems in Congress wearing yellow scarves, armbands or handkerchiefs?

If they wear the armor that they have bought...

or that their parents have bought for them. That particular kind of armor is called 'DRAGONSKIN.'

It took our troops 167 days to get armor.

NYT article. Gen'l Kerns said "that the 167 days to get armor was really pretty good."

Commanding officers of troops about to enter battle...have told them if killed while wearing dragonskin, their death benefits would be denied. They were ordered not to wear it.

What is the reasoning, a PR

What is the reasoning, a PR problem?

Whenever someone stirs the pot

they are going to catch some heat. Murtha's been stirring vigorously and seems to be the only dem in congress with the minimals to take the administration on to this degree. As far as the discrediting of the purple heart goes, I'm waiting to hear what these guys are going to do about it. www.bandofbrother2006.org
A guy on the washington journal said they were going to watchdog this kind of thing.
