Republican = Corruption

From USA Today:

Rep. Ney to temporarily cede panel chair WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Bob Ney, an Ohio Republican implicated in a lobbying corruption investigation, said Sunday he will step aside temporarily as chairman of the House Administration Committee. "Unfortunately it has become clear to me in recent days that the false allegations made against me have become a distraction to the important work of the House Republican Conference and the important work that remains ahead for the House Administration Committee," Ney said in a written statement.

Republican defenses:

IDDI – I didn’t do it. SEDI – Somebody else did it. IJPWH – It’s just a partisan witch hunt. TPHM – The prosecutor hates me. IDIBIA – I did it, but I’m addicted to [fill in the blank here], and I’ll put myself in rehab soon. I promise.

I still have no idea how a Republican on the take is any worse a legislator than a Republican not taking bribes.

Really, how can you tell the difference?

You might be on the take

How can you tell the difference, between a republican on the take and one who is not?

1. When there is no reason for specific legislation other than to make some fat cat fatter, you might be on the take.

2. When you make a speech on the floor of congress, about a business deal in another state, that has nothing to do with your constituents, you might be on the take.

3. When you spend more time with lobbyists than with constituents, you might be on the take.

4. When your DC residence is a yacht owned by a corporation or a lobbyist, you might be on the take.

5. When a you push a bill in congress that was written exclusively by a lobbyist, you might be on the take.

6. When you get millions of dollars in funding for a bridge to a small island that you or your friends and family own, you might be on the take.

7. When your wife gets a job asking your fellow congressmen what is their favorite charity and makes more money than you do for doing it, you might be on the take.

8. When you make law that protects corporations from citizens, you might be on the take.

9. When your reelection war chest has less than 100 contributors, you might be on the take.

10. When your travel agent has an office on K St. and your vacations are by invitation only, you might be on the take.

Di,

That is an awesome list but...

Isn’t that the Republican Platform even without bribes?

They run on giving everything to a select few of swindlers (…I mean “entrepreneurs” –and say that with a swish of the hips) while offering their constituents baseness: ego boosting gay bashing, black bashing, immigrant bashing, etc.

In return the Nation gets to pay 3 bucks a gallon for gas and our kids get to pay for historic debt, die for chickenhawks, etc.

Or am I being too negative? ;)

Yes that is what the republican party stands for and the platform that they run on and the principles that they believe in. I think that there is a simple reason for this. It is a wide difference in world view that really separates democrats and republicans.

The kind of people who run for public office as republicans want to hang out with the money and power. For the most part they are not people who feel powerful on their own. They are not natural born leaders. Most of them are want'a-bes with no real wealth or clout of their own. Running on the republican ticket puts them at the table with the power brokers. That can be very seductive for someone with few prospects, for personal success, on their own.

There are only a couple of reasons that a person would believe that corporations should have almost unlimited power over workers. One of those would be a belief that there isn't really enough sustenance to go around. They are always afraid at their core of not having enough, no matter how much they do have. Then there is the even greater fear of losing it all to some bigger dog.

How can a person who thinks and feels like that put his constituents first? He/she has himself in a position where he is more than willing to take table scraps from those that he admires and respects. To get those scraps he has to keep his mentors/bosses in ever increasing power.

It is really very much like a dog or wolf pack in structure. Mess up [cease to be of use] and as we are seeing now with DeLay the pack will turn on you and other lesser members will struggle to fill your place in the pecking order. Just as with the nicer breed of wolf the higher up you are in the pecking order the sooner and there for the more you get to eat.

Disclaimer...I love canines and do not mean to demean them or to slander them. They differ from republicans in many ways. One is that wolves and dogs have heart. They love and care for all the members of their pack no matter where in the pecking order that member falls. When they attack a pack member they rarely hurt them and they only banish a member if that member is doing extreme damage to the pack dynamic. They are much, much nicer than republicans. I should know I live in a small dog pack, where I struggle, daily, for my position as head bitch ;)

P.S. You too negative, never ;)

Very good analysis Di.

In some twisted sense the Republican world view is correct whenever they get elected! Meaning, the idea that it’s dog eat dog, every man for himself, etc. IS true when people vote for NOT coming together. All we have to do is overlook some things we don’t like about each other so that we may create a better life for the vast majority, yet often when people vote Republican they are literally saying bah humbug to it.

One thing is for sure. Many of us have strong views on many subjects, including: What’s the best computer, when you should get married, Gays, etc. Republicans understand that all they have to do is pick a subject and ask people to comment. As the heat naturally builds they then absorb the topic into the body politic. I look forward to the day when people realize that we will always passionately disagree about a host of subjects AND that has nothing to do with politics.

Say Ruff to the pack for me ;)

with my family.'
