Cronkite calls for 2006 Midterm Convention
Walter Cronkite had a letter to the editor in today's NYT, in which he called for Dems to hold a midterm convention, articulate an agenda for the Congressional elections, and finally get rid of the old repug lie that we have no ideas and just criticize theirs.
I think that's briliant. A convention would show we're serious, and possibly transform the entire political scene. We would finally be in a position to crush repugs, retake the Congress, and take back the country.

I only drink Heineken......
That is a great Idea, from a great Statesman.
So, once upon a time, there
So, once upon a time, there was a liberal media.
Walter's a god. But then...
the folks at Media Matters have put together an interesting argument for not getting too whipped into a frenzy about articulating specifics yet.

In short, the 1994 landslide repub congressional victory featured candidates running on simply "we hate Clinton and democrats suck" up until the 11th hour, and didn't come out with the Contract With America until Sept. 27, 1994, less than 2 months before the election, and just in time for the final push when the majority of the non political junkies start really paying attention. Not saying this is what we should do, necessarily, but it certainly worked for them not so long ago.

With all due respect to the wise folks at Media Matters, keeping quiet will help our candidates in 2006 how exactly? I believe that, if you'll look around, we ARE at the 11th hour, and have been for months.
Whipped into a frenzy? I'd settle for a mild case of anxiety about now. Newt and the Republicans didn't have to contend with an illegal war, the "religious left," unfair taxation, a monumental national debt, or anything except the Monica-inspired "morals issue."
Wait? For what? Until we attack Iran? Until Patriot Act IV is imposed on the Constitution? I think not. We've already waited too long.
Campaigns
are run like ad campaigns these days, and part of the right's opposition research strategy is to scoop and adopt the left's platform. It's not that the left doesn't have a platform, it's that we give it away. Sadly, we just keep handing it to them.
Mourn not the dead that in the cool earth lie, but rather mourn the apathetic throng, the coward, and the meek, who see the world's great anguish and its wrong, and dare not speak.

Quiet
I am not just upset about them being quiet, I want to know if they are still alive. Waiting back and not saying anything about the truly terrible things that are taking place now is not being cautious or careful, it is letting all of America down. We deserve to know that someone who we elected is aware of the disastrous events that are occurring and will act on issues that cannot be allowed to continue. We didn't elect them to be observers. They are the only ones who have the ability to act. I think that being attacked by the likes of Tom DeLay and Pat Robertson should be considered a badge of courage and honor. If the Democrats try to do something morally right and fail, this doesn't diminish the value of what they attempted. My parents always taught me that it is better to have tried and lost, than never to have tried at all. Besides, it also makes the Republicans show their true colors and fill the airways with their lies and stupidity. The fact that a 2006 Convention would require the political MIA's to report for duty is a great idea. I think that it should be held in New Orleans, the city that George Bush tried to drown.
Re: holding it in New
Re: holding it in New Orleans. Great idea! Would be good for the city, as well. Bunch of tourism dollars. A double win, if it can be physically pulled off. And you get everyone who participates to engage in some rebuilding project. Real hammers and nails as apposed to George's photo op. Oooh, I'm gettin quivery...
N.O. ? Where the mercenaries are working???
Nahh....
I vote for a big city that is easy for bluestaters on both coasts to get to and easy to maneuver inside... like Memphis or Cleveland ....
I like Cleveland
for the convention that is. Not any other time. Too much snow. But those Slovinians can really polka der, and Ohio could use a boost.

I think this would be a great idea to get the agenda out.
But you know if we do it the Repugs will too and will try to make us look even worse which they are brilliant at doing.
Also heard about the contract for America proposed by the Dems; nothing much in there as far as ending the war. Their major focus I believe is healthcare. Which is great but don't believe it should be considered more important than ending this war.
The most important thing...
is winning the election. That's all that matters. Everything else flows from that.
Put the convention in St. Louis
Hold it in St. Louis, a blue city trapped in a red state. This is also the state where Blount's son is governor. It has something in common with New Orleans because it's on the same river and has French heritage. It also has the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States. King George would really like it. It will be even better if Pujols and the Cards rise from near extinction to beat the Astros, you know the team from the city that has been voted the one we would most like to be exiled to when our government has forgotten us. Just ask Barbara Bush. She has been at home knitting thousands of socks for the disadvantaged. What a peach! It's too bad that I didn't know about Walter's idea when the Democratic Party called to ask for money. I gave them money only after I told the poor guy from Pennsylvania my feelings about the DLC. All kidding aside, we do need to get our team together to strategize. Dennis Kucinich has now even shamed Gephardt into admitting that the war was WRONG from the beginning. Many of us knew that here a long time ago.
