Rove Launches Smear Campaign Against John Conyers

The Detroit Free press says Rep. John Conyers "openly proclaims that his goal is nothing short of impeaching the president."

Naturally, that makes him a major threat to Karl Rove. And we know how Rove respond to threats - with vicious character assassination campaigns.

As always, Rove is using the "mainstream" media to launch this campaign. He got Conyers' home town paper, the Detroit Free Press to fire the first shot. (The paper was recently bought by Gannett, which installed a new editor David Hunke, who appears to be taking his orders from Rove.)

Conyers rises to take on Bush
Congressman seizes upon Iraq war memos

FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF

WASHINGTON -- At age 76, U.S. Rep. John Conyers -- long a hero to civil rights activists -- has grabbed a new torch: darling of the antiwar, anti-Bush far left.

The attack starts with red-baiting. As it happens, 53% of Americans now think the Iraq War was a mistake; 60% disapprove of the way Bush has handled the war. So the antiwar movement is the overwhelming majority.

Conyers, arguably President George W. Bush's harshest congressional critic on Iraq policy, openly proclaims that his goal is nothing short of impeaching the president.

Aha! Now we see why Rove is engineering an attack on Conyers. But is this even true? As Brad Friedman reminds me, Conyers has never called for impeaching Bush. Can Bailey provide a single quote to the contrary? Or is she just inventing "facts" like Jayson Blair, who got fired by the NY Times for it?

That kind of rhetoric is fueled by his embrace of the Downing Street memos -- the eight British intelligence reports that activists from Rochester Hills to London believe are the smoking gun that proves Bush misled Congress about the case for war against Iraq.

It's not just "activists" who think it's the smoking gun - there are now 70 co-sponsors of Barbara Lee's Resolution of Inquiry demanding U.S. documents relating to the Memos, including Republican Jim Leach.

Conyers, who is expected to speak outside the White House at a Sept. 24 antiwar rally, has had his staff feverishly working to complete a comprehensive report about the memos -- something he knows many of his colleagues won't read.

Many Members of Congress don't read anything - including life-and-death bills they actually vote on (remember Fahrenheit 9/11?). Heck, the squatter in the White House doesn't even read the friggin' newspaper, or urgent memos like "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US"). What is the point of that sentence, except to smear Conyers?

"It was only a few people who dared to first join Martin Luther King," he said in an interview last week of his small but growing support in Congress. "The mood is changing. I don't have any intention of stopping now."

In July, Conyers hosted a meeting about the memos at Wayne State University. Many of the 300 people, including Bruce Felt of Rochester Hills, said they came to see Conyers.

"He's my hero," said Felt, 50, who began following Conyers after the congressman investigated voting irregularities in Ohio during the 2004 presidential election. "He's the only one speaking truth."

Conyers is familiar with the political fringe: It's been his comfort zone over four decades in Congress.

Where the hell did this smear come from? Is Conyers on the "fringe" because he held a hearing that 300 people attended? Because a 50-year-old man calls him a truth-teller?

The second most senior member of the House, however, Conyers is a stark contrast to its most senior, Democrat John Dingell, whose district abuts Conyers' district. Dingell has forged bipartisan compromises and demands respect and gets it.

In reality, Conyers and Dingell have voting records that are nearly identical. For example, both voted against the Iraq War.

Republicans regard Conyers as more of a curiosity who has legendary problems with his staff and an awful attendance record, and is the sponsor of odd resolutions -- like National Tap Dance Day. (In 1989, it failed.)

"Some parts of his district don't see the world the way Congressman Conyers does," said Nate Bailey, spokesman for the Michigan Republican Party. "We have real issues to face and he's tracking down some British memo about a conflict that's been going on a couple of years."

Of course, one of the "real issues" the people of Detroit have to face is the fact that nearly 2,000 U.S. soldiers have already died in Iraq for a war based on lies - and the U.S. occupation could continue for 10 years or more. Yet no one has been held accountable for those lies, because Republicans like Nate Bailey control not just the White House, but also Congress and the corporate media.

The article goes on, but includes at least one more outrageous lie:

Last year, his Detroit office lost turkeys intended for holiday delivery to poor people. He said it was a staff error that was corrected.

On January 8, 2005, the Free Press reported the turkeys were never lost:

"It appears to me that they have in fact accounted for all 60 turkeys," said Agostinho Fernandes, executive director of the food bank in Detroit... the turkeys were distributed to the Greater Quinn AME Church, clients of the Family Independence Agency and other deserving recipients, according to information from Conyers.

Here is the letter I wrote to Ruby Bailey and the Public Editor. I hope you'll write a letter of your own.

Dear Ms. Bailey,

In your article:
Conyers rises to take on Bush
http://www.freep.com/news/nw/conyers10e_20050910.htm

You make the outrageous claim that Rep. John Conyers is on the political "fringe."

What evidence do you offer for that outrageous claim?

You acknowledge he was re-elected with 84% of the vote in 2004.

Does that make everyone who voted for him part of the "fringe"?

Or do you consider everyone who opposes Bush to be part of the "fringe"? In case you haven't been following the polls, Bush's approval rating is below 40%, while his disapproval is near 60%.
http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm

Perhaps you consider everyone who supports impeachment to be part of the "fringe." Again, polls show 42% of Americans think Bush should be impeached for lying about Iraq - which is the significance of the Downing Street Memos that you sneer at.
http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1007

You appear to be part of a Karl Rovian effort to smear a distinguished Democrat.

Clearly Conyers is a major threat to the Bush administration and they are resorting to their usual dirty tricks and smear campaigns to silence Conyers.

You owe your readers an explanation and an apology.

The loss of turkeys

Ruby reports that there was a loss of holiday turkeys in Conyers'office. This is really horrible. If you compare it with the devastation of Katrina and the inertia or just plain neglect and/or incompetence of Bush and company, I am sure that the turkey loss is more significant. Then there is the Downing Street Memo, a little oddity in history that Representative Conyers tried to press Mr. Bush into explaining. The fact that Mr.Bush considers the US Constitution a little nuisance as he rapes and pillages the middle class pales by comparison. How can this woman write this? I think that there should be detention camps in the United States for those whose ethics and morality have been either been stolen, purcahsed,or just forgotten as they serve the armies of the divine rulers Bush and Rove. Maybe we are reliving the last days of the Roman Empire. Personally, if the definition of fringe includes those who still believe that the good in this country is worth fighting for, I am on the fringe.

The only difference between Bush and all politicians before him is the lack of tact and diplomacy. He's just not smart enough to know when to talk and when to shut up. He also doesn't have the use of a 3rd graders vocabulary. I don't think his brains realized how hard it would be to keep him roped in.

The good news is that they can't dump him now. They're in too deep. the only hope they have is to try to try to spin him one more time. They 've done it several times before. If they make it sound like he is still on the top a lot of people who had their hopes up thinking he was done just lose hope again and believe that he's really back on top.

If anyone can finally stop the spin once and for all they'll all go down at once.

I can't think of a single

I can't think of a single politician before Dubya who bankrupted the national treasury, sent American citizens off to fight and die for a personal political goal, and bitterly divided this nation all in one fell swoop.

I believe that there are major differences between Dubya and "all politicians before him."

Okay, Bob, it's time to hit Frank Gallup again: WHEN WILL GALLUP POLL ON IMPEACHMENT? Gallup cannot now say it isn't in the "public" discourse. The Santa Cruz California City Council passed a resolution urging Congress to probe Impeachment of Bush.

Can Santa Cruz annex us all

I want Santa Cruz to annex all of the rest of the Blue states to liberate us from the reign of this madman. Now, he played sailor overnight on the Iwo Jima. He visited and bonded with the firemen and soldiers in New Orleans. We know for sure that he wouldn't go there when any of the abandoned people were there. How can we continue to tolerate him? FEMA has already rewarded contracts to Halliburton and others related to Bush cronies. The haste with which they suspended the Bacon-Davis Law that decreases the minimum wage for the people who rebuild the devastated areas shows how fast they can move when they want to. While Rove isn't sure enough yet that he can nail the governor and the mayor for the disaster and at least save Bush's face a little, the Republicans can at least reap the benefits of the disaster monetarily. The overly made up witches at CNN were on the attack over the weekend against the governor and Nancy Pelosi. Why didn't the governor know that she had to beg and flagellate before Bush to get the help that she needed? I thought that Homeland Security planned it all and knew all. No, it turns out that each governor needs to read the governor's manual on how to ask for help. This isn't red tape. This is dereliction of the Federal Government's role in handling disasters.I still think that there should be a class action lawsuit. If we can't get anyone to attack Bush in the Congress, we the people need to find a way to do it. He isn't like any other president. He is the worst president on record. If this country survives him ,it will be a miracle. ( Somebody should tell the Federal Government that direct depositi of checks won't work because many peopel don't have bank accounts and if you take a check to a check-cashing store, they charge you a fee. Nobody in this administration even knows how people live or maybe they just don't care.)

Rove with his phony christianity wouldn't hestitate to smear Jesus Christ if it personally suited him.

Sometimes I wish I could shrink all these evil botches of nature into beings only millimeters high so I could step on them all and be done with it. But, alas, I know my foot is not big enough to get them all....

It is nonsense to talk about impeachment. Even if that were a reasonable hope - which it is not - those who call for such an action need to read the Constitution. After Idiot Boy comes Uncle Dick. Then the sweet heart Dennis and then Dr. Bill, and then Condi....

Our party needs to stay calm, keep our powder dry. These far fetched ideas hurt us.

We are going to have enough problems on our hands when the truth of Katrina reaches across this country and the poor and disinfranchised are informed. It could get real dicey.

We need to be what we are, the party of and for the people.

I have to wonder if David Hunke, being from Rochester, NY, has any idea how much the people of Detroit love John Conyers? Siding with Rove in a battle with Conyers on his home turf is about as smart as wearing a Dean for president button at a Bush fundraiser. Somehow I have a feeling that at the very least circulation will suffer and at worst the Free Press offices could be visited by the ghosts of 1968.

Shame on you, Ms. Bailey! Writing and publishing a pack of demonstrateable lies against one of the most respected members of Congress ought to be enough to get your ass fired.

In fact, Mr.Editor, I demand you fire this despicable excuse for a yellow journalist.

Mr. Fertik of www.Democrats.com has done a most commendable job of parsing the lies that you published. http://www.democrats.com/conyers-smear

Rep. Conyers what is wrong with the word "impeachment" for President Bush? You may have not said it..but you should have if you love your country.

All of Congress should be yelling it at the top of their lungs.

Guess..we should have impeached him over the sex scandal..or 911 stand down and disappearance...or WMD lies...war profiteering... or huge debt...or pergury to the 911 Commission...or destroying government documents and interfering with an investigation of a crime like 911...or stealing the Presidency twice...or giving public money to religious organizations without Congressional (people's) approval...or ruining our national forests...or just being a lying, murdering, robber...a traitor.

"Impeachment" is something that should have been on the breath of every member of Congress years ago. He is the same as his father who should have been impeached or we would not have the mess we have now.

The word "impeachment" has been on my lips since stolen election 2000.
