How can churches preach politics and not pay taxes?
Many of American preachers used their pulpit as a word from God (who is going to denounce Gods word?). In the name of God they influenced millions of churchgoers that a vote for Bush was a vote for unborn children, sanctity of marriage, and a moral America. Millions of dollars were collected for the Bush Campaign through preacher influence. My question is how can churches preach politics, and not have to pay taxes? Isn't this against the rules of their nonprofit status? What would happen if videos were taken and a few churches, with the help of the media, lost their nonprofit status? Maybe then the churches would get back to preaching about the ten commandments and the bible and stay out of politics.

Joan, we've been asking that
Joan, we've been asking that very question
for some time, here.
How do they get away with it?
I know how, i was almost one of them
born and raised in Lynchburg, Va (Moral majority)in an evangelical church family, we were taught that everything we do as long as its in the name of GOD, to defeat Satan and be one of the ones not left behind in the "Rapture" its O.K. They are hard wired for the appocolypse, and armageddon. GW told us "I know God wants me to lead this nation".
"God created freedom and the U.S. constitution
and therefore America will rid the world of Evil Doers". They preach politics because of demagraphics to get votes so they can reclaim the U.S. and the world for Christ. And they have placed themselves at the right hand of GOD just as the Romans grabbed the Christian Ball, ran with it and became the Roman Catholic and now the Evangelical Church. I am sorry to drag on but they are dangerous! You would not believe what they have in store for us. Thanx BAXTER905@msn.com
This is one of the best
This is one of the best articles I've found on the basis of the tax exemption, how it is applied, and of course how it is abused by the Christian Taliban.

Bumper Sticker Logic
Recently I was in Portsmouth, Ohio and saw a very nice looking motherly lady driving a large SUV that had a bumper sticker on that read --
GOP - God's Official Party
That is really twisted thinking. May God have mercy on our country.
Hmmm...did you put sugar into her ...
gas tank to sweeten her trip?
Ya know, call me nuts, but
Ya know, call me nuts, but I'd like
to think that sticker was tongue-in-cheek.
I'm having a very hard time grasping that
anyone would actually believe that!
I dont know stuff is getting pretty weird here in the
old USofA, I wouldnt write anything off as a tounge in cheek anymore. LOL
scary to think people would actually believe that is right.
conversion
if they cannot convert you they will kill you!
remember to them if you are on Gods side you can do no wrong. anyone not on their side are posessed by Satan and "evil doers".
Religion and Taxes
Does anyone know the history of this issue and how or why did they get tax exempt status in the first place? I know a lot of religous organization do a lot of great charity work and I think that the costs associated with that charity work should be tax exempt. But I don't think they just get a blanket free-ride.
Nice bait, and I suspect
Nice bait, and I suspect that you know the answer full well Lenny. Yes, they get a free-ride because they are supposedly non-profit. Just like Falwell, Baker, and Robertson don't keep any for themselves -- they give it all to neocon political "charities."
It is far worse than that.
It is far worse than that. The overall effect of these "churches" is to provide far less aid to those in need than if they did not exist at all.
How to get a tax exemption for a charitable organization
John Ormiston
1) It takes a form. Get it from the IRS (Yeah, them. Use the toll free number. Tell them you want to apply for tax exemption for a charitable corporation. If your organization is not incorporated in your state, see an attorney. Maybe the attorney will incorporate it for free. (It is called "pro-bono".
2) Before you do that though, get an Internal Revenue Code and go to Section 501 (c). It is tough reading as you will see from an excerpt below, but it gives you an idea what standards your charitable organization has to meet.
3) There is a lot of financial info wanted also, so try to get a public accountant who can help--hopefully, again, pro-bono. You want to keep as much of the organization's money you can so it can carry out the purposes of the charity.
4) Notice nothing is said to permit or prevent preaching the word of God. To prohibit preaching the word of God would be unconstitutional. That is why the US was formed in 1776, wasn't it?
Good luck. By the way, here is part of Section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code:
"(3) Corporations, and any community chest, fund, or foundation, organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, testing for public safety, literary, or educational purposes, or to foster national or international amateur sports competition (but only if no part of its activities involve the provision of athletic facilities or equipment), or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals, no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual, no substantial part of the activities of which is carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting, to influence legislation (except as otherwise provided in subsection (h)), and which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.
Actually, the US was formed
Actually, the US was formed in 1776 to get relief from both political and religious tyranny. The Framers were very careful to provide for the freedom OF religion, as well as the freedom FROM religion.
IOW, separation of Church and State. Don't pray in my voting booth, and I won't vote in your church.
Bill, The Constitution
Bill,
The Constitution explicitly states that: “The majority will choose the Religion and the rest shall burn in Hell.” Sheeeeesh.
Anyone in the minority, like Catholics, etc. need to get the hell out and find a land where this does not depend on a vote. This is a Southern Baptist Nation and ONLY their sensibilities with respect to coerced prayer by children, idols in courtrooms, etc. are the only ones that need be entertained.
If you disagree and can convince them fine. If, despite them saying that a one ton statue that will change our Nation’s courts is not Idolatry, you continue to disagree, you are both wrong and irrelevant.
Majority and boisterousness rules on Religious matters: Please, if you are not a Republican or Terrorists keep quit.

Darn! I always forget to
Darn! I always forget to read the fine print.
You may get a kick out of this. I recently decided to refinance my mortgage to take advantage of a lower interest rate. I'm dealing with the same bank that I have been with for over 40 years, and have lived in the house for almost 25 years. Due to the Patriot Act, I have to provide two forms of identification and fill out yet another form, so that the government can be assured that I am who the bank believes me to be.
How long will it be before we have to take off our shoes, be checked for "chemical traces," and show our deposit slips to a rent-a-cop, in order to enter a bank?
Banks question our ID
Like our government it is "we" who should be asking for their information...are they solvent, did they make bad loans, are their CEOs pilfering from the kitty, etc.?
Thanks to Republicans banks are now international so they can move money around without accountability. They are above the laws..it seems we are not. They are too big to fail.
I'd like to know how they get off taking our wealth and moving it off-shore, etc. to world banks. They finance things we would not approve. They finance both sides of a war and slave labor manufacuturing, etc.
I've been trying to find an American national or local bank who has credit card management. MBNA was bought up by Citi Bank and moved to London and China.
I moved my account from Bank One to a local bank. I told them why too.
We are being robbed while they talk about "terrorism" around the world...missing cute women, etc.
Great Question......Easy Answer
When the folks in power dont believe in separation of church and state, the churches can do whatever the hell they want to do and there is no one to stop them. Even the FPPC doesnt make a sound.
So, until such time as the Repubs are booted out, expect to see all sorts of strange and bizarre things.
Republican Hypocrites
Christian Democrat
I'm a Christian and I'm a Democrat. I resent the Republican party claiming that they are the party of God. Republicans are hypocrites. Of course they wanted to impeached Clinton for having an affair with an intern. However, when Newt Gingrich not only had an affair with an intern, but left his wife for the intern, not one single "religious conservative" got on TV and spoke of it.
I believe in the separation of Church and State. Only a country that recognizes all religious can remain free and independent. The fathers of our country realized this but unfortunately, Republicans use Christians for votes and many are dumb enough to go along.
they are not dumb
knowledge is power, and the enemy of the church. they are not dumb (im sure you meant in kind way) they are ignorant. "men never do evil more compleately or gleefully than in the name of religion". Some of the founders were just fine with the Anglican church, most preffered no religion at all. It was not until England started controlling their economy and taking money from their purses and liberties did they get upset. Otherwise they would have remained loyal survants of the crown. They all had no desire to be envolved in the blood bathes of the Roman Catholic and Anglican or Lutheran church battles.
Religious Battles
Christian Democrat
Absolutely. No country can remain if it is fractured by religious in fighting. If Catholics and Protestants fight it out like in Northern Ireland, then the country will lose. Many people feel passionately about their religious faith. However if they charish their religious faith and want to be able to worship they way they want to, then they have to let people have the freedom to worship they way they see fit.
A country that is tolerant of different religious views is a strong country. That's the purpose of separation of Church and State.
Wbammons,that was very well stated.
Thank you.
Re: Republican Hypocrites
Hopefully, you also believe in the separation of drugs and alcohol.
Jesus asked us keep the state out of the church and vice-versa (who's image is this?), but private interpretation of scripture is an old business indeed.
The folks that you are referring to are the same people who would kick Christ out of a homeless shelter for having wine on his breath. Don't forget that he told us that we wouldn't recognize him, and I don't think he was kidding.
Good luck, and be well,

GOP Hypocrites
Christian Democrat
I couldn't agree more. I am a proud Christian and a proud Democrat. I hate the republican party and everything they stand for.
Christian "Conservatives" forget that separation of Church and State is as important to the Church as it is to the State. Do we want state supported religion, like say Iran. No way. However separation of Church and State also allows the many different faiths that we have in this country. We can go to church when we want, where we want, and believe whatever we want. That is something we should all be proud of. Instead of trying to overthrow the government and put in radical extremist (Christian Conversatives) in a government.
Jesus said that the way you treat the lowest amoung you is how you treat him. Christian Conservatives support policies that destroy America (Free Trade) and attack the poor for being lazy, when they are just poor.
The favorite topic is abortion for Christian conservatives. However if Roe v. Wade is reversed and abortion is made illegal, what do you do with the people that have them anyway. Are they quilty of murder? If so, since Christian Conservatives support the death penalty, then we execute murderers. Right? So now you have a situation where Christian Conservatives are so angry with the abortion that they put the mother to death. That makes a lot of sense.
Religious payoff for votes
According to polls, most Americans don't trust religious leaders with their public money yet Congress allows the President to dip into the treasury any time he wants to give "Faith Based" money to is "favorite" religious organizations and leaders.
Bush secretly is sending troops to protect Rev. Moon assets in S. America.
It is not only against the Constitution it is discrimination. Only "select groups and leaders" get public money and to build huge buildings, buy up hosptials, and cathedals in areas that could not afford such luxury because there are very few members. I've seen this all over while traveling.
Bush bribes them with our tax dollars for support. Congress pretends they don't know about it.
In my community, we now have more wealth and new buildings/private schools with local churches than our public schools. My community almost 90% Catholic yet here's this Evengelical Protestant church built on expensive/tax free land in the center of town. One huge church with few members...DA. A local community built hospital (by tax payers) now a religious one with a huge cross out front.
This public money for religious groups is reason to impeach him and every member of Congress allowing it. They have failed to protect the Constitution and it's goals for a democracy regarding religion.
My "liberal" Senator even got pork for a favorite university of his. I told him this was wrong but they're all there with their hands in the kitty.
We are being robbed and every institution in this country is being destroyed. You name it...financial, religious, government agencies, health care, military, etc. The Bush Ponzi Plans go forward without comment. It is not government but robbery and destruction of our democracy.
Politicans are too chicken to protest the religious groups because they are afraid of losing votes or being put out of "their" church/temple. This is what we fled in Europe is it not?
No,Americans have not accepted a Catholic/Jew/Evengelical religious President since Kennedy because they keep their religion separate. Seems Kennedy did somewhat but they can't. Members of Congress like Senator Byrd, etc. get on CSPAN and read religious passages. How dare they!! I don't care which party or which religious group...this is a violation of the Constitution.
"When a politician voices their religious views in public, they exclude
those who do not share the same beliefs. They also violate their oath of
office to represent all citizens." Unknown.
Great Posts, everyone!

I can't believe I'm even reading this but it makes total sense being that you guys are coolaid Clinton drinkers. You talk how Republicans use churches to fundraise but you never say one word about how John Kerry and Bill Clinton campainged in churches all through the 2004 presidential race. THey campaigned in black churches so I guess they to should lose there tax exempt status? If your going to bring up a point please don't be so one sided in your comments.
Stick to the subject

1) Churches
and
2) Taxes
See if you can keep up.

The discussion was about churches and taxation, no one mentioned candidates, prior to your complaint about it!
What do you mean "please don't be so one sided"? We are proud to be liberal and progressive DEMOCRATS, of course we are "one sided". Your kind forced a brain dead, pretend-Christian on our country, by using scare tactics and colluding with church leaders. Do you really expect that we would be open minded about that?
Proud member of the reality based community.

Did Clinton say he was doing God's work in Bosnia? Did Clinton say that God told him to do that thing to Monica? Did Clinton try to give tax money to churches? Do you see a difference Right Wing Religious Fruitcake?

Re: Did Clinton say he was doing
If you thought having your girlfriend's cat watch you two in bed was scary, just think about God for a moment. He is all-seeing right? However, I doubt that He is a peeping tom, or would hold it against you anyway.
We really would like the republicans to get out of our private lives. First it was the drug-war, and when that excuse grew weak, they invented terrorism. If it wasn't invented, then the people were already so tired of the propaganda, that suspicion prevailed.
Remember that the police don't really protect you, they show up after the fact, take a report, and hopefully catch the person who hurt you. However, you are still hurt.
The framers were pretty smart people, forbidding a state religion (1st amendment), mandating that we have the right to be armed (2nd amendment), and giving us the right to privacy and not to be spied on (3rd amendment).
On top of that, they mandated that only gold and silver money would be legal tender in this country (Article I, Section 10, US Constitution). The way things are now, a non-elected official of a non-government agency (Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve Bank System) decides what your "dollar" is worth on any given day.
I dislike the fact that Mr. Clinton is mostly remembered for his sexual indiscretions, rather than his good deeds. If I had been him, I would have simply told the reporters to mind their business, and had my marines confiscate their press passes.
They claim that they do what they do is for "the children". Exactly what sort of country are our children going to inherit?
Michael Hearne

Clinton sexual indiscretions
Yes...Clinton should have done what Elder Bush did when he was President and having an "affair". He told the press to mind their own business. They did.
What was different about Clinton's "affair" is that he allowed them to abuse him and his wife...the country. It made us look bad to the world.
I think, it was a ploy of distraction on purpose. While the press talked about that, Congress and Clinton passed NAFTA and media consoladation. It was a step toward PNAC. I'm disappointed in Clinton for his allowing it and his covering for the Neo Cons. We have been betrayed by our leaders who are out to take away our democracy.
What happens when their butts hit DC? They go crazy with power and arrogance. They forget why they are there? Who pays for it? They are more "deserving" than anyone else?
I'm begining to think...power can be a sickness for many. That's why we need constant vigilance and the Freedom of Information Act.
The religious groups saw their opportunity and pushed their agenda at that time. They've been waiting in the wings for years now. Our democracy always under threat from them. Lincoln had to stop them at the time of the Civil War. Many want a Theocracy not a Democracy because it gives them power and wealth. Anyone see God in there?
We have more diversity of religious groups and wealth than anywhere in the world but it is not enough for them.
To keep our democracy we have to take away their tax free status. It is not in the Constitution. They have abused our generosity.
Democrats using chruches/temples/etc. to campaign
I agree. It was wrong and I told them so.
Religious leaders should not hold public office either. I've told Jessie Jackson, Jr. he has to pick one. He can't be both and hold public office.
As Berry Lynn of AU stated..it seems to be a race as to who is the most religious candidate. All four candidates in the 2000 election quoting the Bible, supporting Faith Based agenda, etc. Using religion to get elected says little for any democratic leader. Republicans and Democrats are wrong in this regard.
The FEC fell short of doing their job and telling candidates to stop it. Yes..every agency no longer functions properly. Well...Republicans can do as they please can't they. At this time, they are lawless.
Deity...
Atheism cures religous terrorism...
Somehow the 'division of church and state' hasn't reached the masses.'
Separation of Church and State
Christian Democrat
Where did Jesus ever say anything about overthrowing the Roman Empire? He never did. Why? It wasn't important. Government is man's creation and not God. God doesn't care about man's laws, God has his own laws. There is nothing more self-rituous than to see some man think that his laws are important. Man's laws are only important to us, not God. Once again, God has his own laws and he doesn't recognize man's laws.
Jesus didn't attack the Pagan Roman Empire and demand that they be overthrown. However Jesus did teach against the religious leaders of the day, the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus went so far as to call them "hypocrites" and "vipers". There is no difference between the right wing radical extremist religious republican conservatives than the Pharisees and Sadducees during the time of Christ. Matter of fact, the Pharisees and Sadducees were the religious leaders of the day and they would have truly been the "religious conservatives" of the day.
Again, Jesus' wrath was not directed at the Pagan Roman government. It was directed straight for the religious leaders of the day, Pharisees and Sadduccees. Jesus himself called them "hypocrites".
When asked if Jews should pay taxes to Caesar, Jesus replied, Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render unto God what is God's. Jesus never called for the take over of Jewish state from the Roman Empire. He never called for military action. He called for people to turn to God and called the religious leaders "hypocrites" because they practiced "religion" and not faith.
The Pharisees and Sadducees also loved stoning "sinners" and demanded that Jesus be put to death for having the nerve to call himself God's Son. How dare he!!!
The right wing, radical, religious, conversative republicans would love nothing more than to stone gays, women who have abortions, and all other sinners not discussed here.
Re: Separation of Church and State
The term "Separation of Church and State" does not exist anywhere in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. That term was invented as a propaganda tool, used by both sides.
The first amendment to the Constitution guarantees our right to choose the church of our choice, but forbids a state religion. In other words, there is no "Church of the United States" as there is a "Church of England".
There is a certain element of society that is attempting to use the first amendment to outlaw God, and this is nothing new. Our enemies have often used our own laws in an attempt to defeat us. The simple fact is that non-citizens should not have a voice in government, nor should they reap any benefits meant for citizens, and non-citizens should not be protected by the Constitution of the United States.
If we aren't careful, we may become an anarchy. This really wouldn't do at all, because most Americans are not trained to live on their own.
Another Right Wing Nut here.
Another Right Wing Nut here. What in the world do you mean that non-citizens should NOT be protected by the Constitution? Guess you like your President's plan of taking everyone rights away - even Americans. How would you like the President having the right to label you and having no recourse. Go ask Padilla how that is going for him. How would you like a little stay in Gitmo when you have been labeled an "enemy combantant" without any evidence?
Becoming anarchy? With your party in control, it is total anarchy for Democrats and the rest of the world! I would LOVE to see George Bush survive on his own - no money, no family name, no Karl Rove to cover his ass - he would survive for all of 2 seconds working a real job making minimum wage.

Thomas Jefferson was into propaganda?
Is that what you're saying?
Would you like a wee bit of education on the origination of the phrase 'wall of separation?'
Let's rumble.
My dog is smarter than your president.
Propaganda...?
You are a perfect example of what you accuse others of: a propagandist who makes up your own brand of reality. You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own "spin" on the facts.
The First Amendment of the US Constitution contains the "Establishment Clause," which has been interpreted by the SCOTUS to indeed erect a wall of separation between Church and State.
Discrimination
Maybe the IRS only concerns itself with the tax-exempt status of churches that don't support Bush.
