CAFTA Passes By One Vote in ANOTHER Republican Midnight Massacre
Speaking of shite, that's all the American citizenry seems to get from Republicans anymore. Tom Delay pulled another midnight massacre and held the 15 minute CAFTA vote open for over an hour whilst all manner of dirty deeds were done, not so dirt cheap... Very reminiscent of the MediFraud vote in Nov. '03 when Delay held the vote open for three hrs while alleged bribery was taking place...
US House passes Central American trade pact
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly approved a free-trade agreement with Central America on Thursday, handing President Bush a hard-fought victory in difficult times for efforts to expand global trade. The Republican-controlled House voted 217-215 in favor of CAFTA, after a final push by Bush and top aides to win over many reluctant Republicans. Only 15 of the House's 202 Democrats backed CAFTA, and 27 Republicans opposed it.....House leaders held open the vote for more than an hour as they pressured fellow Republicans. Rep. Robin Hayes, a Republican from the textile state of North Carolina, switched his vote in the closing minutes to clinch the win...
Whoever the 15 Dem's are, they need to be publicly excoriated for this betrayal of the public trust! Anyone got the rollcall of the vote? I'll try and get back later with it if no one posts in comments.
BTW, if you hadn't heard, CAFTA stands for Cancel All Fu*king Trade Agreements...

The Sellout Democrats
You wanted to know the sellout Democrats, well here's a copy of the post on David Sirota's Blog. I agree totally with what he proposes that should be done.
"Targeting the 15 Democratic Sellouts"
"We now know who the 15 Democrats are that each undermined their party and America's middle class tonight by casting the deciding vote for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The bill passed by one vote, meaning each of the 15 Democrats cast the deciding vote. When 27 Republicans vote against their own party leadership as they did on CAFTA, Democrats have only these 15 sellouts within their ranks to blame for the fact that the Democratic Party has been relegated to permanent minority status.
They 15 Democratic sellouts were:
Melissa Bean (IL)
Jim Cooper (TN)
Henry Cuellar (TX)
Norm Dicks (WA)
Ruben Hinojosa (TX)
William Jefferson (LA)
Jim Matheson (UT)
Greg Meeks (NY)
Dennis Moore (KS)
Jim Moran (VA)
Solomon Ortiz (TX)
Ike Skelton (MO)
Vic Snyder (AR)
John Tanner (TN)
Ed Towns (NY)
Let's be clear - all of these people should never get a red cent from labor unions or the progressive community again, and that goes even for the ones who represent marginal districts. The idea that this was a "tough vote" for a Democrat who represents a swing district doesn't hold water - no one is getting voted out of office over voting against CAFTA, and voting for American workers. Remember, polls show that Americans are sick and tired of Congress passing these corporate-written "free" trade deals that sell out ordinary workers.
But, let's further break this down. Which of these 15 Members has CONSISTENTLY been selling out the Democratic Party and America's middle class? The way we find that out is by looking at other recent votes on key economic issues, such as the Bankruptcy Bill, and the bill to limit citizens' legal rights and protect corporations that abuse Americans.
Starting with bankruptcy, we get the list whittled down to 12: Bean, Cooper, Cuellar, Hinojosa, Jefferson, Matheson, Meeks, Moore, Moran, Ortiz, Skelton and Tanner.
Moving to the bill that limits citizens' legal rights and protects corporations that abuse ordinary Americans, the list gets whittled down to 9: Bean, Cooper, Cuellar, Hinojosa, Matheson, Meeks, Moore, Moran and Tanner.
These are the 9 Democrats who are the difference between House Democrats being in the majority and the minority - they are the people who undermine the vast majority of honest/courageous Democrats who fight for ordinary people in Congress everyday. They are the ones who make it consistently impossible for Democrats to deliver a message that they are the party that stands up for ordinary working people in this country. The fact is, if Democrats are going to be in the minority for the foreseeable future, it would be better if these folks were defeated, because they do more harm than good to a party that desperately needs unity to let America knows what it stands for.
Again, while I have described why it is ridiculous to give a pass to any of these 9 because they represent marginal districts, even if you sort out for that factor the number barely changes. Winning with 55% or more of the vote is considered crushing an opponent - and only Melissa Bean falls under that threshold. The 8 others win by 55% or better, meaning they don't even have the pathetic/dishonest "I'm a marginal Member so I have to sell out American workers" excuse: Cooper (69%) , Cuellar (59%), Hinojosa (58%), Matheson (55%), Meeks (100% - unopposed), Moore (55%), Moran (60%), and Tanner (74%).
In an earlier post today, I mentioned that Rep. Greg Meeks (D-NY) ought to be frightened of a primary challenge from the Working Families Party and the progressive community in New York City. But he's not the only one on this list that better be nervous about their job as an insulated career politician. Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), for instance, has been dogged by controversy throughout his career, including actually personally profiting from his previous sellouts to the credit card industry. Maybe this will be the vote that draws him the strong primary challenger needed to defeat him in his solidly progressive district.
To sum up - each of these 15 Democrats ought to pay a price at the polls for their brazen sell out tonight on CAFTA. They undermined their party and America's workers. And the 9 Democrats of these 15 that have been consistently stabbing the Democratic Party in the back - well, they have shown an unfathomable willingness to disregard anything other than corporate campaign cash. They are the reason why Americans are so cynical about the political process, why Democrats can't win key states like Ohio, and, in general, why Democrats are currently in permanent minority status."
The Sellout Democrats are Whining and Crying!
From David Sirota's Blog
Why Democrats Should Value - Not Shun – Accountability
There is nothing so pathetic as someone who undermines a team crying when they get called onto the carpet for disloyalty. But, as expected, that's what's happening with Democrats and CAFTA. I was met this morning with a few emails from Capitol Hill Democrats who don't like that I had the nerve to tell it like it is about last night's tragic vote. The whining and crying is the perfect image of pathetic thumb-sucking weakness that has hurt Democrats throughout the heartland.

Hang on to that list...we need to work these people
hard in about 6 months...and support their challengers.

I am steaming over the passage of the anti-worker/anti-middle class CAFTA Bill, HR 3045, 217 to 215. There was a lot of political shenanighans going on, no doubt. A few Republicans voted against it but I am especially upset with the 15 Dems who voted FOR CAFTA. Remember that NAFTA has lost us jobs and not helped raise the salaries of those in other countries GETTING our jobs. It has been a big failure and we don't need more of the same. This was my message to those of the 15 (names and contact info below):
Mind you, congressional representatives don't make it easy for you to contact them. You will likely be asked the state, which I have provided. For many, you have to enter an area zip+4 code. UPDATE: one of those "not voting" said they voted NO. Also, when time expired, they illegally kept the vote open. I have updated the above info and emailed everyone. I urge you to do likewise. Or call them tollfree at the old Senate Office Building number which goes to the Congressional Switchboard: 877-SOB-USOB, often quoted by progressive talk show host Thom Hartman -- but it works.
Peace,

Thank you for this, Kate

No more vitamins and supplements
without a doctor's prescription, now. I guess we will also have to wait for them to go back to school and learn something about vitamins and minerals, also. Search CAFTA vitamins. Shocking.
I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. Dorothy Day
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi Fights Back on the CAFTA vote!
This is a clip from her "House Call" email to me"
"July 28, 2005
CAFTA - Another Abuse of Power
Late last night, Republicans forced the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) through the House, holding the vote open for over an hour as they intimidated enough of their Members to vote for a flawed trade agreement. Before the vote, Republican Congressman Jim Kolbe admitted that the Republican leadership would have to "twist arms until they break into a thousand pieces" to get their own Members to vote for CAFTA. That prediction proved to be accurate. The Republican leadership was successful in getting their Members to vote against the interests of their constituents, and CAFTA ultimately passed 217 to 215.
The CAFTA passed by the Republican majority is a step backward for workers in Central America and a job killer here at home. The agreement turns the clock back on basic labor standards, lacks environmental protections, and hurts U.S. workers by exporting their jobs. Democrats are committed to increasing free and fair trade in order to create new markets and opportunities for America's working families, farmers, and small business owners, but we cannot support trade agreements, like CAFTA, that create a race to the bottom."
This is my email to her on the same subject:
"Leader Pelosi;
I saw you on CNN's Inside Politics today and I was impressed with your call to investigate the wheeling and dealing that went on before and during the CAFTA vote last night. Keep up the good work. It was a sad day for the Democratic Party when 15 Democrats went against the recommendation of the Democratic Leadership and voted for CAFTA! This was a total sellout of the American worker and the American Middle Class.
The following clip from David Sirota's Blog says that you are going to hold these Democratic Members accountable and I hope you do. This is the very reason that the Democrats are losing elections. Because turncoats like these vote against the wishes and the best interests of their constituents!
Give 'em hell Congresswoman!

From David Sirota's BlodG:
"Pelosi Courageously Steps Up & Demands Accountability"
"Roll Call has a new report up (attached at bottom) about House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D) holding an emergency meeting of the House Democratic Steering Committee tonight to discuss formal sanctions against the 15 Democrats who sold out their party and voted for the corporate-written Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Pelosi raised "the likelihood that defectors' committee assignments would be reviewed at tonight’s meeting of the Steering Committee." That's absolutely necessary - why should Democrats who undermine their party be given plum committee assignments over other, far more loyal and principled Democrats? Pelosi should be commended for her courage - and now she needs to back up her words with action."
Finally we have a Democratic Leader with guts to stand up for the little guy and for the good of the American people!

Pelosi and Boxer cannot carry this party by ...
themselves. These 15 'renegades' need to be reminded that financial support in the next election where they seek re-election will be going to challengers.
We need to clean house now. Forget fair vote counts, forget the war, forget Rove, forget fascism...go for the juglar so that we can start with a clean slate of fighters.
Until these Quislings are replaced...we havent a chance of a snowball in hell of reclaiming our country.
Isn't it more than just fifteen Democrats who voted yes?

Doesn't just speak of fifteen Democrats who voted yes. What's up with this one? (June) I'm upset with Feinstein. (and she's up for re-election) I wrote her about bankrupcy changes & something else that I'm spacing out on right now, and she wrote me back some lame excuse which sounded more like a repug response than a democrat one.
