Karl Rove: Traitor and Liar?
Evidence appears to be mounting for two criminal activities to have been committed by Karl Rove, the key White House advisor often referred to as "Bush's Brain."According to Webster's Dictionary atraitor is: "1 : one who betrays another's trust or is false to an obligation or duty; 2 : one who commits treason." According to a report this morning by Michael Isakoff in Newsweek, it was Karl Rove who "outed" Valarie Plame as a CIA operative to Time Inc. reporter Matt Cooper.
According to the Newsweek story today, at 11:07 on a Friday morning, July 11, 2003 Time magazine correspondent Matt Cooper sent the following e-mail to his bureau chief, Michael Duffy:
- "Subject: Rove/P&C," (for personal and confidential)
"Spoke to Rove on double super secret background for about two mins before he went on vacation..." "please don't source this to rove or even WH [White House]"
"it was, KR said, wilson's wife, who apparently works at the agency on wmd [weapons of mass destruction] issues who authorized the trip."
"The trip" that was being referred to was that of former ambassador Joseph Wilson February 2002 to investigate charges that Iraq was trying to buy uranium from the African country of Nigeria which Wilson said he had found no evidence to support the claim. Wilson's wife was the former covert CIA operative Valerie Plame.
The leak of Plame's identity was first reported by columnist Robert Novak on July 14, 2003. According to Murry Wass of The American Prospect "Rove also adamantly insisted to the FBI that he was not the administration official who leaked the information that Plame was a covert CIA operative to conservative columnist Robert Novak last July... Rove insisted, he had only circulated information about Plame after it had appeared in Novak's column."
But wait... Cooper's e-mail about Rove was dated July 11, 2003, three days before Novak's article was published! That means that Rove disclosed Plame's identity to Cooper before it appeared in Novak's column.
The evidence appears to be mounting for two criminal activities to have been committed by Karl Rove:
- First, the outing of the identity of a CIA operative. According to David Corn of The Nation: "This is not only a possible breach of national security; it is a potential violation of law. Under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982, it is a crime for anyone who has access to classified information to disclose intentionally information identifying a covert agent. The punishment for such an offense is a fine of up to $50,000 and/or up to ten years in prison.
- Second, possible lying to the FBI and to a Grand Jury. We do know from the Newsweek story today and other sources, that Rove had testified before the grand jury "two or three times" and signed a waiver authorizing reporters to testify about their conversations with him. As I have stated in this blog, before if Karl Rove testified before the Grand Jury under oath that he was NOT the source of the Plame outing to Cooper when in fact he WAS the source, this could result in a perjury rap for Mr. Rove.

The only thing I can figure is if Fitzgerald is also looking for the leaker to Rove. I'm sure everyone knows that Karl will do anything for the President. Should be interesting to see who else goes down.
If Karl doesn't want to go to prison, I say send him to Iraq for 10 years! He is partially responsible for the mess there - making up lies and selling them to the public.

White House Won't Comment on Rove, Leak
WASHINGTON - For two years, the White House has insisted that presidential adviser Karl Rove had nothing to do with the leak of a CIA officer's identity. And President Bush said the leaker would be fired.
But Bush's spokesman wouldn't repeat any of those assertions Monday in the face of Rove's own lawyer saying his client spoke with at least one reporter about Valerie Plame's role at the CIA before she was identified in a newspaper column.
Rove described the woman to a reporter as someone who "apparently works" at the CIA, according to an e-mail obtained by Newsweek magazine.
White House press secretary Scott McClellan refused to discuss the matter at two news briefings Monday. He said he would not comment because the leak is the focus of a federal criminal investigation.
"The prosecutors overseeing the investigation had expressed a preference to us that one way to help the investigation is not to be commenting on it from this podium," McClellan said in response to a barrage of questions about Rove and the previous White House denials.
"I'm well aware, like you, of what was previously said," McClellan said. "And I will be glad to talk about it at the appropriate time." He said the appropriate time would be when the investigation is completed.

ThinkProgress and Reuters have outlined the method used by Rove to attempt to conceal his involvement in outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame.
It was the same method that DID NOT work for Bill Clinton in trying to conceal his sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky. The method could be called "wordsmithing and the careful-parsing of statements" or it could be called "LYING". Bill Clinton was impeached and lost his law license for a similar offense. What will happen to Karl Rove?
Reuters states:
"Rove has carefully chosen his words when questioned about the leak. “I didn't know her name. I didn't leak her name,” he told CNN last year when asked if he had had anything to do with it."
OK. And Bill Clinton said: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky."
Bill Clinton chose his words carefully. To Clinton at the time the words "sexual relations" did not include the act of oral sex, which he had had with Lewinsky. Therefore in Clinton's mind he was telling the truth. To the rest of us, it was a big fat lie.
Rove's alibi was: "I didn't know her name and didn't leak her name." [CNN, 8/31/04]
In fact from reporter Matt Cooper's now released private e-mails we see that Karl Rove may not have actually leaked Valarie Plame's name but the information that the wife of Joe Wilson worked at the CIA.
OK. He may not have leaked her name but he leaked that fact that Joe Wilson's wife was a CIA operative.
Therefore in Rove's mind he was telling the truth. To the rest of us, it IS a big fat lie.
But ThinkProgress concludes that Rove did not choose his words carefully enough. Rove was asked by ABC "Did you have any knowledge or did you leak the name of the CIA agent to the press?" Rove's protestations to the press (and perhaps to the Grand Jury?) that he "didn't leak her name" may have been technically correct but when he answered "No" to ABC News producer Andrea Owen's question as to whether he had "any knowledge", Rove was clearly lying.
Bush Complicity
This is big! Press Secretary Scott McClellan blows it for Bush when he asserts that, "The president knows that Karl Rove wasn't involved." Oh, ya? How does the president know that? Because Rove talked with Bush about it?! So, as Political Wire points out, "So the question becomes: What does the president know and when did he know it?" When it gets hot enough, and the president has to have a sacrificial lamb, and Rove's is the only head to fill the bill, he's gone, at least from the White House. Will he be tried for treason, or at a minimum, some lesser felony? Rove pleads guilty to a lesser charge. Bush quietly pardons Rove. And then, Rove can go on with the business of running Republican strategy and logistics, but from an institution that is at least one-step removed from the White House and without security clearance.

Democrats urge Bush to fire Rove in leak scandal
Rep. Henry Waxman (news, bio, voting record), a California Democrat and the ranking minority member of the House Government Reform Committee, called for a congressional hearing to hear testimony from Rove, who is widely seen as the architect of Bush's election victories.
"The recent disclosures about Mr. Rove's actions have such serious implications that we can no longer responsibly ignore them. The intentional disclosure of a covert CIA agent's identity would be an act of treason," Waxman said.
A lobotomy for Bush's brain
George Bush's brain needs a lobotomy! Removal of Rove may have the same effects on Bush as a lobotomy has on the brain. Maybe Bush will become calmer and less aggressive! By cutting the these ties maybe the American public will stop suffering from their repetitive thoughts - like things are going well in Iraq. It should be perfect treatment from depression to neurosis to criminality of the current administration.

Definitely, removing Rove from Bush is a lobotomy. The rest of
the week should prove interesting if journalists keep up their anger and direct it with the intellect of long ago.
Please start the incision. Hopefully the surgeons are well prepared.
It seems many journalists are pretty angry, and due to the nature of the issue, a journalists duty to inform his taxpaying public citizen they should be boiling white hot mad. Leaking a name for whatever reason, being knowing or unknowing of undercover status of an agent should result in an indictment by a prosecutor of (ROVE) as a traitor, no questions, comments should be made regarding the issue.

Rove is definitly the organ
Rove is definitly the organ grinder. Bush doesn't have the brains. I think that is the only reason Rove has not been dismissed thus far. It isn't only that Bush has an elastic sense of morality, but also that he doesn't know what the hell he'll do without Rover there to tell him.

There is then of course the question of how many other covert operatives and assets in the field have also been compromised as a result of the traitors act.
