Conyers Hearings: Amazing, Unforgettable, and Powerful
Thanks to your efforts, the hearing will re-air on CSPAN-2 Thursday at 8 pm ET, late-night on CSPAN-1 at 1:56 am Friday "morning," and again on Friday at 8 pm ET.
On Thursday, we made history.
All of our determination and hard work paid off as John Conyers and thirty-five House Democrats heard unbelievably powerful testimony about the Downing Street Minutes from Joseph Wilson, Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern, and John Bonifaz. (You can read full coverage at our coalition site, AfterDowningStreet.org)
Throughout the riveting three-hour hearing, one question hung over the room: Could it be true, as the Minutes state so plainly, that "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy"?
The evidence led to one inescapable conclusion: Yes.
Cindy Sheehan lost her son Casey in combat in Iraq on April 4, 2004. "I believed before our leaders invaded Iraq in March, 2003, and I am even more convinced now that this aggression on Iraq was based on a lie of historic proportions," she said.
As Rep. Charles Rangel put it, "Quite frankly, evidence that appears to be building up points to whether or not the president has deliberately misled Congress to make the most important decision a president has to make, going to war."
Rangel, who served during the attempted impeachments of Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, said with regret that Bush's deception might rise to the level of an impeachable offense. And he was not alone.
John Bonifaz offered powerful testimony on the need to adopt a Resolution of Inquiry to force Congress to investigate whether Bush committed impeachable crimes. Judging by the statements by several passionate Members at today's hearing, such a Resolution is certain to be introduced.
We need as many members as possible to support this Resolution. So if you have not yet urged your Representative to support the Bonifaz Resolution of Inquiry, please do so now.

After the hearings, Rep. Conyers and six other Representatives went to the White House to deliver a letter demanding answers to questions raised by the Minutes. The letter was signed by 122 Representatives and 560,000 Americans - including tens of thousands of Democrats.com members. The White House tried to ignore Conyers, but he would not relent. It was an inspiring sight to see!
At the end of the day we were exhausted, but also exhilarated by how much we have accomplished in just a few short weeks, amidst a near-complete media blackout on this historic story.
Now the hard work begins - because there will be no investigation unless a majority of Representatives vote for the Resolution of Inquiry. So we must persuade every Democrat and at least 16 Republicans to investigate the lies that led us to Iraq. We have new hope because 5 disillusioned Republicans broke ranks to support an Iraq withdrawal amendment sponsored by Rep. Lynn Woolsey.
As you know, Democrats.com does not shy away from hard work. We believe George Bush committed numerous impeachable crimes, and we are determined to build a grassroots movement that is powerful enough to force Congress to impeach him.
With your help and support, we will succeed.
Thank you for everything you do.

History in the making....
I felt heartened to watch real American patriots do their best to rescue our democratic republic upon which our freedoms and way of life depend...
I told older family members who don't surf the net and generally get their news from Nightline and Meet the Press to watch the hearings on C-SPAN... they were shocked at the information and hope that justice prevails... They also felt that it was unlikely that even this story would change our hardcore Republican and Christian conservative relatives' views...
I said to them that when the Army is in ruins and the draft is reinstated, even hardcore Republicans will vote more for their children's safety than they will for pure partisanship...
I feel more hopeful tonight than I have in quite a while....
There is another photo,
There is another photo, shown over on kos...apparently they would not let Rep. Conyers into the WH to deliver the petitions himself. That makes me incredibly angry, being that he is a member of Congress, and the branches are equal. Plus, it is OUR house, paid for with our tax dollars!

I believe that's Maxine
I believe that's Maxine Waters standing to the left of Conyers.
( She would be on Conyer's right side, facing the picture, she's on his left)
Did I just complicate the hell out of this?
PS- She's wearing a white suit.
Knock, knock
Hey George someone is at the door. It's the Downing Street Shark and he wants to bite you in the butt. That is of course the only part that he sees because you are on the run. I didn't expect him to answer the door. I guess that we now know what he thinks of representatives from Blue States. Mr. Conyers you are welcome in my home every and any day. I take my hat off to you and salute you as a true American hero. Bush can run but he can't hide forever. Maybe he was dining on some oven fried chicken with glazed peas and mushrooms and two fresh fruit a la Guantanamo.
AMAZING WORK EVERYONE. but.........QUE PASA.
I have been having trouble getting into "afterdowningstreet" all day.
Sounds like others also having problems. Be great if it was just because
site was swamped...but i'm old enough to remember Nixon's dirty tricks.
Are "they" trying totake site down. Inquiring minds would like to know.
Some Spine Folks!!
We're finally seeing some Spine!! Wow, that was great watching C-Span 2 last night!!! Hopefully, this is just the beginning!! Woohoo!!!
Disgusting
I am a registered Democrat in New York (but maybe not for long). This mock impeachment thing was pretty vile, and inane. It also appears to have included antisemitic slurs and myths. If this is all the Democratic Party has to offer, I will soon feel compelled to change my party affiliation. I am really profoundly disappointed with the choice and antics of Howard Dean, and these kinds of gimmicks too. This is not the way to stage a comeback.

We are not begging for votes. If you wish to have our Nation continue its rapid decline under the Right then I guess there is no stopping you.

Where did you get
racial slurs out of this and what exactly is your problem with Representative Conyers demanding that we get the truth about the lead up to the Iraq war?
Proud member of the reality based community.
There is nothing " mock "
There is nothing " mock " about any of this.
We are very serious!
Yea, Right!
Talk about sheepdip! Another right wing eighth grader flexing it's so called intellect :)

You may be a "registered"
You may be a "registered" Democrat, but you sound very much like a DINO. Being a Democrat is not so much a matter of what you put on a voter registration form, but what you do, and how you think.
If you truly believe that Dubya and the whole BA gang have been honest about the reasons for attacking Iraq, and should bear no responsibility for the the horrific loss of life there, then by all means -- PLEASE fill out the "I want to be a fascist" form and join the neoconservatives.
The DLC "centrist" way of staging a comeback has given us over a decade of shameful pandering to the right-wing nut cases, and splintered our Party. The "antics" of Dr. Dean is EXACTLY what we, as Progressive Liberal Democrats, want to see from our national leaders: truth, honesty, and a return to having a spine.
I am profoundly disappointed
I am profoundly disappointed in our president, vice president, the full cabinet, and the Republicans in Congress, who are systematically dismantling the Constitution. I'm sorry, but what was YOUR beef? A few comments made by Dean (that are true, by the way) and a hearing held to question the actions of our dear leader that led us into an illegal and immoral war that has killed 1700+ of our service people, cost billions of dollars, and made us despised around the world? Hmmm, funny, but I don't buy it.
You're no Dem!
Bsmith, you are no Dem. Do you think you are fooling anyone here with that fake "I'm going to change party affiliation" nonsense. If you don't like what Democrats stand for which is the truth, Getting to the bottom of wrong doing and having an open society not this secret skull and bones mess we have now then you are right to go and as you go, you have my blessings!
Who is your news source?
Do you get your news from Rush Limpballs? I read a lot and haven't seen any thing that was anti-Semitic. What is inane and vile is what is passing for democracy in Washington now. If you like them, you deserve them. So long, farewell, ta ta!
Ah, ha!
Some little neo-con war profiteer was offended by the "O-oil I-Israel..." what was L-for? statement made. Truth made him squirm, didn't it?
I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. Dorothy Day
media coverage of Conyers' hearing
Good evening, folks….
A little help, please. Do we have a clear indication of the media’s response to Rep. Conyer’s hearing on Thursday? I have seen and heard nothing, although I haven’t researched much. I do know that I heard nothing on NPR all of today, Friday, even though there was great noise made about the Iranian election, continuing Terry Shaivo affair, and Tom Cruise’s proposal on the Eiffel Tower . This afternoon, Juan Williams was interviewed on NPR and nothing was said. There was another prominent interview, earlier today, about Bush’s falling poll numbers, Senator Durban’s outrage about Guantonimo (sp), and, yes, Terry Sheivo, but still nothing was said. New York Times today, appeared to say nothing, at least on its front page.
Did I miss something, or did corporate media, including NPR, by the way, (National Corporate Radio), again, just blow off this monumental event?
MSM Coverage
I found these hits in about 2 minutes:
ABC

CBS

Thanks for that, The CBS
Thanks for that,
The CBS report was quite good. Ambassodor Wilson's statement was beautiful. Seems CSpan did
the good deed, but I am not sure about the rest of tv media...don't watch. I don't think NPR is scoring
very well, either.. seems apalling.
Ambassador Wilson: "It used to be said that democracies were difficult to mobilize for war
precisely because of the debate required," (going on to say the lack of debate in this case
allowed the war to happen)
The Invisible Blogger...

This is a link to a source that Bob has included above, and takes you to an invisible blogger. At least I couldn't find his name anywhere on the site. I guess that he thinks that he is so well known, that he doesn't need to identify himself.
Here is a portion of his rant against Democrats.com for censorship and fascism:
The post was deleted because (among other things) it cited quotes without attribution, or a link. The same rules that apply to our own members, also apply to Republican trolls.
Since our foul-mouthed right wing-nut blogger friend has re-posted the entire diatribe on his site, you can read it there. You can also reply to him there -- if you feel like it…;-)
What an ass!
What an ass! The Right Wing STILL trying to blame all this on CLINTON. Who started THIS war? I think it was BUSH! And speaking of Kosovo, wasn't that the UN that went in there? Can anybody clear up Kosovo for me because I thought that is what Wesley Clarke was sent in there - under UN orders.

If you take a look
If you take a look at his image gallery I think it will tell you a lot about who and what and how old this guy is. But it is a nice day in most of the country and sitting on the porch swatting flys is not too bad a way to spend Fathers Day, if you get my drift ;)

Lady Di, you are correct.
Lady Di, you are correct. The little boy can't put together a complete sentence without drawing attention to his limited vocabulary. His latest diatribe really displays his inability to counter with anything but profanity and immature ranting.
We've had our fun with him, now let's leave him and his blog to the obscurity he deserves, and get on with the business of putting the radical-right on the political back-burner.
I totally agree
He isn't worth our time. Not to say that others who want to play on his little blog site shouldn't.
Hope you are having a good Father's Day, Bill. The same for all our great dem dads.

Thanks Di, from all of us
Thanks Di, from all of us "dem dads"...;-)
While George blames his self
While George blames his self made catastrophe on "faulty intelligence" (yes, but not likely the
kind of intelligence failure with which he seems to have conned so many), the invisblogguy may
not remember, certainly doesn't care to know, that U.S. intelligence agencies are just as full
of lies, deciet and corruption as Bush, himself. And, it seems, the Bush clan have dominated
the national intelligence arena for decades. Who knows what kind of tripe Clinton was fed by a
bunch whose only goal was to overrthrow Saddam Hussein. We might well wonder just how long the
Bush family and their tentacles in internation conspiracies have been "fixing" intelligence.
Invisblogguy represents the majority of perfectly naieve (often quite ignorant)American voting
public who take their democracy for granted and call it "the power of pride".
Seems he is called
Seems he is called "vicegrip"..??
He's one angry character. Many should be so angry who supported a president who now has
the blood of thousands on his hands; certainly the blood of unknown thousands of innocent Iraqis.
Perhaps vicegrip shares that responsibility, perhaps all of us do. Nonetheless, we are
witnessing a major geopolitical catastrophe. It seems that the more is so, the greater there is
the presumed need to fight for it. There must be many angry folks, just like vicegrip, out there
among the reds, and they are spinning it to greater and greater heights of insane morality and
violence. However, while I share some of the responsibility for what has befallen the entire
world at the hands of GW, I do not share the anger of that group. My anger is my indignation,
I have little need to justify it in light of the current situation in our country. Vicegrip’s
ravings, while certainly not as pointless as they first seem, are worthy of attention if only because
of the anger revealed, (as well as an associated sense of loss), that must surely be coming over
his particular group of Americans. However, vicegrip's time would be well spent with some real
guilt and remorse for the collective responsibility of those who voted Bush into office and
continue to support him.
Lunatic fringe entering the halls of congress
The Congressional Black Caucus has always housed and fostered anti-Semites, but now they are truly joining the conspiracy groups that see Jews and Israel as the controllers of the universe and cause of all problems.
They may have well had in trekkies to testify to their belief that aliens were the cause of Sept. 11th.
Sad, pathetic, reaching and embarrassing.
Typical Libertarian
Typical Libertarian poppycock... You keep confusing criticism of the US neocon-backed Sharon political machine with being anti-Semitic. Your so-called political party and its members are the real bigots and hate-mongers.
Are you talking to a dead man?
This guy and his friend suffered a terrible accident this morning and fell off the earth ;)

Can't get enough attention ?
I'm sure you wrote this hoping for lots of posts so you could feel important for a moment in your small little life. I feel sorry for you so I thought I'd throw a Rabid dog (oh, sorry, your name is Joedog,) a bone. Now that you have had your few seconds of attention that you obviously can't get anywhere else. It is time to crawl back under your rock because from your post we can see you have been in the dark a long time.
Lame duck democrats grabbing attention
Once again the leaders of the democratic party are making asses out of themselves. All I hear from the democrats on the hill are complaints and finger-pointing, but never any solutions.
May I suggest that you...
May I suggest that you are doing the same, but please do it elsewhere...?
Hey Bluegill, The
Hey Bluegill,
The reason you don't HEAR solutions to the morally bankrupt, mentally retarded proposals of the Right, is that you do not listen. Get off your ass and gain some skill. Gain some knowledge. Only then, will your be able to hear.
Rush limbaugh drone
Bassfearmee, did your God, old dope fiend Rush tell you to come here and post? This is one Dem with some soulutions. Tom Delay needs to go back to Texas where he can serve his jail sentance and Rush needs to be indited for doctor shopping. Your president needs to be tried for war crimes and our brave young men and women need to be released from their indentured servitude to this mad neo-con extremist who took this country by coop. HOWS THAT FOR SOLUTIONS!
WHAT DID DWIGHT KNOW....AND HOW DID HE KNOW IT ?
Carefully selected and biased excerpts from letter written by President Eisenhower
to his brother Edgar 11/8/54.
"Now it is true that i believe this country is following a dangerous trend when it permits
to great a degree of centralisation of governmental functions....The political processes of our
country are such that if a rule of reason is not applied in this effort, we will loose
everything--even to a possible and drastic change in the Constitution. This is what i mean by my
constant insistence upon "moderation" in government. Should any political party attempt to abolish
Social Security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not
hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group,of course, that
believes you can do these things. Among them are H.L.Hunt (you possibly know his background). a few
other Texas millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number
is negligible and they are stupid.....You also talk about "bad political advice" i am getting. I always
assumed that lawyers attempted accuracy in their statements. How do you know that i am getting any
political advice? Next, if i do get political advice, how do you know that it is not weighted in the
direction that you seem to think it should be...So how can you say i am getting "bad" advice; why
don't you just assume i am stupid, trying to wreck the nation, and leave our Constitution in tatters?

A Recollection of History
A Recollection of History
As the cameras were being packed,
we turned and said our goodbyes,
with congratulatory pats on the back,
and the feeling of hope in our eyes.
There was talk of a new day,
a first step, a rolling ball,
and the fading sound of chanting,
I could still hear from the Mall.
I turned back.
Women of great stature.
Men of moral design.
The new giants were born today,
in a small room, in the basement.
Is that blue I see thru the clouds?
Vivid blue stalked by gray.
And the fire red, not the usual huge.
Turbulent like blood,
running thick like thieves.
No one cared to listen before,
but warned of the horse and the rider,
they began to fall in line.
Nail...
And shoe...
And mind.
And as the cameras were packed,
we all came to realized,
the world has begun to listen,
finally they will see the lies.
This is dedicated to Congressman John Conyers, Congresswomen Sheila Jackson Lee, John C Bonifaz, David Swanson, Steve Cobble, Cindy Sheehan, and the 120 other Congressmen and women who signed the petition, the ever growing After Downing Street Coalition membership, our brave American troops caught in the crossfire, the witnesses at Thursdays hearing, and the more than a half a million Americans who signed the letter and refuse to take no for an answer.

To bad we don't have audio on this site, if we had i would suggest Roy Orbison's "Running Scared" as appropriate theme music for Arminius' arguments. While I'm in a musical mood..anyone else flash on "Johnny's in the basement..mixing up the medicine" during last week's basement taping. As for tonight on the floor of the House..what else...JOHNNY BE GOOD. Just trying to shed a little lightness in the midst of darkness.
You have to admit he does
You have to admit he does have a point. Actually I think Caesar, Babe Ruth, and my dog really screwed us on Iraq. In addition out of all the hundreds of branches of government the Republicans only have three so that hamstrings them.
My 2 cents for Arminius
Bush is angry because he went to the United Nation and tried to tell everybody there the meaning of Resolution 1441. Poor Bush, unable to convince everyone at the Security Council that “serious consequences” = war. You have to have a unanimous vote to go to war. And we all know that Bush doesn’t negotiate with anyone - it’s his way or you’re a terrorists.
In Kosovo, I do believe NATO went in there. It wasn’t Clinton waving the banner to war. TV showed mass exodus of the citizens leaving the area but yet the Iraqis didn’t do this. Why do you think that was? Maybe because the citizens of Kosovo didn’t like what their leaders were doing to them and the Iraqis didn’t leave because obviously they believed Saddam’s way was best. Why isn’t Bush doing something for the people of the Sudan? Is there not enough oil for Cheney and Bush to do something for those people?
The Right wants to blame Clinton for everything. Bush got us into this war – not Clinton. Maybe Clinton did get intelligence from our agencies about WMD in Iraq but I bet he didn’t completely blow off the U.N. inspectors reports like Bush did. Necco is right, all you Republicans want to keep every dime you have and not support this country including the military. Are the rich paying for this mess in Iraq? No! Bush is trying to make his tax cuts permanent so that the rich don’t have to be bothered with paying for anything. I think those who are paying for this war should be heard – I say send your ass over there!

In for a penny...
Geez, you really admire the 250 Swift Boat Liars? Nixon's old organization that was created solely for the purpose of discrediting Kerry's original protest against the Nam War. Funded by the friendly folks at the GOP. All major statements made by the Swifty's has been proved false. About what you would expect from the rabid right.
Republicans are only good for 4 things: lying, cheating, stealing, and mass-murdering.
Arminius is really a joke.
Google him. He plays only
Google him. He plays only one note: Clinton did it.
Arminius raises some
Arminius raises some interesting points for consideration. For example, just how pervasive (across party lines) are the lies and deceit that cloak our involvement in Middle East policy? President Clinton may have been a great president, but that is no reason to believe he is particularly innocent when it comes to our involvement over there. That being said, and perhaps we can turn a wary eye onto Mr. Clinton, I am not so convinced that there is good reason to have a debate about it, even though we would all parade our naiveté and arrogance if we did not recognize culpability within the Democratic party. However, all that about Clinton is past. The here and now is a fucked up mess delivered to us by forces of corruption and evil that make Saddam Hussein look benevolent. And nothing is going to make it better, certainly not comparing the offenses of the Clinton Administration with the evil doings of Bush and company. Yes, a diversion, plain and simple. Debate? Well…yeah, but what would be the real point? Would the discussion urge us closer to a clearer picture of the corruption that seems to come with the presidential territory? As if we should not know it already? If that were the point, perhaps it would be worth it. However, while such things are debated, the world situation grows more dangerous by the day and that scalawag in the white house, and the sheep who follow him in their arrogant stupidity, believe in their denial, and cling to it because the truth MUST be too much for them to bare. There are plenty of diversions to bottle feed the American voting public and placate the angst they would otherwise feel and, who knows, actually wake them up to the responsibility that, ultimately, they will have to own; like the people of Germany had to own it because they, too, followed like sheep. The shame that has been brought onto America by George Bush is going to be with us for a very long time, and diversions like that proposed by Arminius are little more than quick pain relief.
Let the truth sting.
