I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. Dorothy Day
Fine, let'em try
Doubtful they would get 3/4 of the states to ratify...
but if they did, I think former President Clinton would
clean their clocks if he were allowed to run again.... its that 8
years of peace and big surplus that is so appealing....
Yeah but besides peace and
Yeah but besides peace and prosperity what have the Democrats ever done for us?
(And for you Monty Python fans; the aqueduct goes without saying!)
Abuse of power
This is simply another example of the right's constant striving for more power.
If this were in fact to actually pass, this old soldier would be one of the first to take to the streets, armed and ready for a new revolution.
I think this is the funniest
I think this is the funniest thing I have read this morning. It is pretty obvious that it is directly designed to prevent Bill Clinton from ever running again, but it does leave the door open for GWB and or Dick Chaney, in the event that George should catch a cold just before the end of his term and leave Chaney the office. Very clever guys, but no cigar. They really think that we are stupid, don't they?
It takes years to get a change or an amendment to the Constitution ratified, thank heaven.

They are also trying to change the other amendments
on the eligibility of a non US citizen to be President, just for
Arnold
They are changing and making laws just to suit their evil needs

IMO, I would LOVE to see
IMO, I would LOVE to see this one appealed! Not for that over steriod thing in Cal-a-for-na either. I've heard talk that Fareed Zakaria might be interested IF this amendment was changed. I'd vote for him! Hell, I would WORK for him. A very intelligent man! Even Rice said that she can't believe that he hasn't been chosen to advise a President BUT maybe he will when we get the next one in there.

It's repeal means Bush would
It's repeal means Bush would run again. It presently limits one to two terms only.
I understant that Jim
I understand the 22nd amendment. Clinton would beat Bush all day long if that amendment was done away with. I would like to see the 14 amendment changed though.
EDIT - sorry just took my Constitution out and relook at 14 - NEVERMIND!

I agree about Clinton. I
I agree about Clinton. I have not had a chance to dig up what dinamic implies but I have her comment on my mind as well.
My reading
of what this says is that no person who has had two terms can run again.
It excludes anyone who has been elected to the office twice. Bill Clinton has already been elected twice, so he would not be able to be president again.

Thanks Di.
In the spirit in which they work Republicans need to add:
Should Republicans ever lose the majority, Republicans will automatically be declared the winners and every American will kiss our asses thrice daily.
Why be coy? Be direct my Republican friends.
Are we reading the same link?
I think repeal of the 22nd Amd. would permit Bill Clinton to run again....
That's true, but it would
That's true, but it would also allow GWB to run again or his father for that matter.
Pandora's Box
any repeal of the 22nd admendment is a bad idea. Do any of us really believe that Clinton would win against Bush in an election? I mean did he even win the first election vs Gore? Did he win this last election, or were the electronic voting machines rigged? I am not sure if I will trust any election in this country again, but this would just be a one way ticket to dictatorship by the Bush family(not that it isn't now).
Missing links
I see what happened and why there is confussion, the first post had no link to the proposal then several links were offered further down in the thread. Dinamic saw one of the links and read it as the resolution not realizing it was the actual amemdment. Yes, repeal of the 22nd ammendment would allow both Clinton and GW to run again....however, GWH can still run again since he was only elected once it does not matter if the 22nd is repealed or not.
How was he only elected only
How was he elected only once? I mean technically hasn't he been elected twice?
(Do you mean Daddy?)
Yeah, he means GHWB, or old
Yeah, he means GHWB, or old #41 in Dubya-speak.

GW Bush was "selected" by the Supreme Court, with the first election
and this election was rigged with the electronic voting machines,
so the truth is that he hasnt been "elected" at all.
The Pretender
Hear, hear.
I second that! The elections
I second that! The elections were stolen, plain and simple.
Hey why do you think I wrote
Hey why do you think I wrote "technically".
Umm, look closely at the sponsor
You'll see that Hoyer and three of the four co-sponsors are Democrats.
Rep. Howard Berman [D-CA]
Rep. Frank Pallone [D-NJ]
Rep. Martin Sabo [D-MN]
Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner [R-WI]
Also, this has been raised several times in the past, the first time that I am aware of was the 102 Congress in 1991- 1992. My question is what are these guys thinking?
Maybe Howie, Frank, and
Maybe Howie, Frank, and Marty want Clinton to run again.

"This is the "Schwarzenegger/Clinton exchange". If the R's were going to introduce legislation allowing naturalized citizens (Arnold) to serve as president, then the D's were going to go for allowing Bill Clinton to have a third term.
The primary sponsor, Steny Hoyer, is the Democratic Whip (and a great guy)"
I still think it sounds pretty nutso! Pallone is pretty progressive overall, seeing his name on
this along with that dreadful Sensenbrenner gave me the willies.
They need to get down to some real work!
Aren't they going to be taking a summer recess soon?
there is petition concerning this on care2 mostly liberal people who are very anti-bush, which doesn't look good for the dems involved, IMHO.
Well if it came to Schwarzenegger vs Clinton:
who would win? If it were, I'd wager Clinton
Personally, I think repealing the law that means that a US citizen, not of US birth but one that chose to make this place their home, should have a shot at running to run the White House. Yes, that would allow Schwarzenegger to run but it would allow other people to run too. Jerry Springer comes to mind, but Jerry for President? Hmmm....
Removing term limits entirely I think is a bad thing. A President should only serve a maxmimum consecutive term of eight years, but with no time limit maximum that could be served overall. This means that if the law was changed thusly, Clinton could run again, but GW couldn't run again this time. However four years later Clinton and GW could run against each other. The alternative is there needs to be some supplemental process in order to allow a president to run for more than eight straight years - maybe a referendum on the President a year before election? If a President is hugely popular and secures a 66% majority of votes in a referendum then sure, run again. Or, perhaps something else. I haven't thought it through but maybe, just maybe, there needs to be some checks on long-sitting Presidents.
If term limits were completely removed, and GW ran again in 2008, and won again, there would be no way he would even survive until 2012. In most world democracies elected leaders don't tend to survive for this long. That is of course if we are still in a democratic republic, and there are people who are questioning how much freedom we really do have here. I'm trying to be positive on this one; I love my adopted homeland but it's because of what's happening right now that is making me want to keep my EU citizenship.
And another point, totally unrelated. In the last one or two elections, didn't the colours on the political map switch around? Weren't Democrats the red states and Republicans the blue ones? Now if Republicans are red-staters then why they're happy to be red I don't know. Red is the colour of Socialists (you could even say that red is the colour of the Communists and the Nazis). Democrats are more "socialist" than the Republicans so why did the colours change?
Thanks for listening, Mark.
