Can You Imagine a Repeal?
Can you imagine a repeal of the nearly countless number of laws, policies and other counterproductive actions taken by the current Republicon congress and executive branch?
Any effort to reverse the negatives put into place in the last 4 and half years would have to be enormous. Indeed, and that doesn't even take into account the next 3 and half years of damage.
Many of the issues emplaced by the Republicons are but the capstones of work they began as far back as the Reagan administration (or even before). It boggles the mind how far into the irretrievable past the year 2000 has become. People will have become accustomed to the changes, which may make it all the more difficult to perform the radical, progressive agenda of merely returning to the balance of 2000--when, in fact, we should be aiming to reverse many policies even farther into the past. It's ironic that we would need to go backwards to actually be progressive and moving forward.
What would be necessary to roll back what's already been done by Repugs? Just a few thoughts--please add your own and correct these as needed.
- Massive "purges" (restoring those who have themselves been purged, if possible) in federal agencies; replacing Repugs by progressives (to restore basic parity/balance).
- A thousand(?) laws repealed and new ones in their places.
- Disbanding/Breaking up of all these Ultra-Mega-Media Corporate Conglomerates!
- Implace previous limits on media outlet ownership.
- Proper regulations by the FCC, at least to ensure fair and equal coverage of major candidates.
- System-wide Election Reform, including perhaps the rejection of the electoral college (I read a fine argument about how it prevents a third party from developing as well as weakening the middle class--alas I've forgotten the argument--so this is up for debate). Many believe an amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing the Right to Vote would help alleviate the massive voter fraud (at least in terms of systematically preventing people from voting) we've witnessed. Paper trails and required counting/reconciliation with electronic tallies.
- Massive support to re-develop independent media companies.
- Massive Government (re-)regulation of Big Business; the breakup of (effective) monopolies that have been created.
- Repeal the insane tax cuts and restore taxes to previous levels; perhaps even to make up for the shortfall bonuses given these 8 years!
- Massive support to stimulate growth of smaller businesses to replace giant corporations where monopolies have been broken up.
- Massive worldwide efforts to re-establish friendships and restore our reputations.
- Massive Efforts to restore balance to the Judiciary with Progressive/Liberal appointments!!!
- Massive Reprints of textbooks across the nation, along with remedial classes in the sciences and evolution to re-educate the poor college students who went to high school in the dark ages.
- Genuine, comprehensive efforts to restore environmental laws; require cleanup by industries given a free ride.
- Proper investment in education.
- Re-establish PBS with added funding for programs that explain the reasons for all the needed corrections.
- Re-establish and strengthen the separation of powers within the government.
- Move employment and anti-poverty programs back out of the churches and "faith-based" initiatives; cut them off in transition.
- Re-emphasize government/civics education in secondary school. Teach students and citizens at large, at least the Bill of Rights. Efforts to repair the language too--there is good reason for Estate Taxes and it's inappropriate to call them "death" taxes. That's just one example.
- Re-instatement of the Estate Tax.
- Ensure equal and fair treatment under the law (eliminate descrimination based on any number of things).
- Re-establish citizen's rights and security (major amendments to the so-called "Patriot" Act).
- Put an end to the use of torture by the military and intelligence services.
- Work to extricate ourselves from whatever foreign "wars" we've become entangled with.
PLUS, we will be operating under a badly DAMAGED economy and RUINED diplomatic and business relationships with the rest of the world! Indeed, we may have already suffered a collapse of the dollar and it's replacement as the world's reserve currency!
Plus, how do you manage to restore the integrity, self-esteem and ideals of tens of thousands of Journalists??? I would wonder if the fourth estate shouldn't even have some sort of formal protection from the government; if not (dare I even suggest)(okay, shoot me, then show how wrong-headed such a thought would be)(I won't mind) even a possible constitutional amendment...
In any case, to accomplish a reasonable semblance of parity, the Democratic party will have to act in a way that will "appear" to be just as autocratic, power-mad as the Republicons have done... Can "we" do that? It's rather sort of against our natures. Besides, some caution would be necessary to avoid alienating the electorate. It would seem that even with a major victory it's going to take alot longer to repair the system than it took to destroy it.
Oh, and one last thing occurs to me. The Executive Branch has abused tradition and taken advantage of the notion that if something is not explicity stated to be outside it's purview, it's fair game. This may well have set precedent that 'it' can do many things it was never intended to engage in--perhaps greater definition of the limits of the Executive needs to be codified?
Anyway... We certainly have an enormous task ahead even given the best of circumstances.
Thoughts?

One of the best posts.
blueink sums it up.
It is not just that the Chimp's smirk is irritating it is, more importantly, that he has caused one heck of a lot of pain and suffering.
By the way, WAS Newsweek's story factually inaccurate? Maybe not.
Dem leadership is part of the problem
Much of what needs to be repealed was passed
with the assistance of our Democratic leadership.
When Congress is turned over to the Democrats,
we still face a challenge in convincing our
big business controlled leadership that repeals
in these issues are important.
That is why we all must stay in continuous contact
with our Senators and Reps by email, telephone,
snail mail, whatever works. They must be made to
understand that this is important and that we
are watching.
