Buy Your Gas at Citgo: Join the BUY-cott!
by Jeff Cohen
Looking for an easy way to protest Bush foreign policy week after week? And an easy way to help alleviate global poverty? Buy your gasoline at Citgo stations.
And tell your friends.
Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation's oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him "the Anti-Bush."
Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company. Money you pay to Citgo goes primarily to Venezuela -- not Saudi Arabia or the Middle East. There are 14,000 Citgo gas stations in the US. (Click here http://www.citgo.com/CITGOLocator/StoreLocator.jsp to find one near you.) By buying your gasoline at Citgo, you are contributing to the billions of dollars that Venezuela's democratic government is using to provide health care, literacy and education, and subsidized food for the majority of Venezuelans.
Instead of using government to help the rich and the corporate, as Bush does, Chavez is using the resources and oil revenue of his government to help the poor in Venezuela. A country with so much oil wealth shouldn't have 60 percent of its people living in poverty, earning less than $2 per day. With a mass movement behind him, Chavez is confronting poverty in Venezuela. That's why large majorities have consistently backed him in democratic elections. And why the Bush administration supported an attempted military coup in 2002 that sought to overthrow Chavez.
So this is the opposite of a boycott. Call it a BUYcott. Spread the word.
Of course, if you can take mass transit or bike or walk to your job, you should do so. And we should all work for political changes that move our country toward a cleaner environment based on renewable energy. The BUYcott is for those of us who don't have a practical alternative to filling up our cars.
So get your gas at Citgo. And help fuel a democratic revolution in Venezuela.

Well it appears that some members of the US Senate are more "concerned" about
the auto industry not losing jobs than in pushing for better fuel efficiency in autos.
Right! This is a smoke screen. Jobs may actually increase if stricter standards were implemented. More quality control jobs would be created.

No CITGO?
There are some stations under a subsidity name - but get their gas from CITGO. Put your cross streets address in the link and they'll come up! If everyone buys "CITGO" georgie and his cronies will be forced to lower the prices and maybe be honest, at least in the gas situation, to the hard working taxpayers - Maybe.
What a stupid idea!!!
As a democrat and someone concerned about Human Rights and the environment I can not belive what Jeff Cohen is suggesting. For those of you who do not know Chavez and his governement engage in gross human rights violations please pay a visit to Human Rights Watch, Amnesty international, Reporters without Borders, Inter-American Press Association, etc.. Chavez has also destroyed Citgo and the state run company PDVSA, which will hurt the poor in the long run. By the way poverty and unemplyment have increased under Chavez (according to Venezuelan govt. statistics). The Venezuelan government hasn't been very nice to the environment either (Hato Pinero). I think Jeff Cohen story should have been to encourage bike riding and public transportation and to conserve energy at home, not to support the oil industry and further our dependence on it. I encourage people to do their research before supporting such a quack!

Yes a couple of the links are to reporters without borders, as far as I know they are a reputable organization that are seen as unbiased. BTW they are French based not US and have been critical towards many governments including our own (visit their web site). Just for your knowledge Vheadline (your link) has extensive ties to the Venezuelan government and is extreamly biased in many cases they are opinions with few to no actual facts or references. I did post other links that substantiate the RWB claim.

Chavez has said that he will
Chavez has said that he will provide subsidized gas to poor Americans in an interview he did on Democracy Now.
OK, Lets get a sanity check
Hi all,
First, let me say I just now joined, so I can comment. Please no attacks on why I have only been a member for such a short time. Everyone has to start sometime :)
We need to refocus. Actually, we need to wake up. We cannot just blindly support anyone who happens to oppose President W. That doesn't make them right, that only makes them popular. Consider this, then make up your OWN mind.
1. Chavez is building up a huge weapons arsenal, threatening war thru out South America. This will bring death and pain and suffering to countless millions of innocent people. Sounds like "W" doesn't it?
2. Chavez is in bed with the oil industry. Venezuala is the #5 oil producer. Venezuela oil is state owned. 60% of the people in venezuela are poor, making less than $2 a day. Where's the money going? Into the oil companies and Chavez's pocket. Sounds like "W" doesn't it?
3. Chavez is responsible for deteriorating human rights, weakening social programs and violating civil rights in Venezuela, all so he can collect more power and be top honcho. Sounds like "W" doesn't it? PS: Don't believe the lies he's working for the poor. They're getting poorer. Go visit, see for yourself! PLEASE be careful, it's a dictatorship, you don't have freedom of speech like here in America! They throw people in jail there for not "seeing" things his way. Go to the human rights web sites, they have the facts on this guy, and you know you can trust them more than the state department :)
Chavez is a far-left version of "W". He is dangerous, bad for the world and the cause. Sounds like "W" doesn't it?
Like they said in Iran during the Shah's revolution: "Down with the dictator, and up with the dictator" There are many people who are sorry they didn't act more carefully back then. They replaced one evil, with another, and are now stuck. So many people have died needlessly as a result. We have a chance to think first, act smartly, then live better! First, we have to take back our right to make up our own mind, and stop letting others tell us what to think. Have faith in yourself, brothers and sisters, we're not as dumb as they think we are. Don't put blind faith in your leaders, even if you support them. Power corrupts, greed destroys... yes, even democrats can get sucked into the black hole :(
OK, bottom line (finally): Don't buy Citgo gas, you'll be funding death and destruction in Chavez's war. We don't support Bush's war, we shouldn't support his. We shouldn't support any war.
Peace to all, and we'll get thru this, if we stay true to ourselves and humanity.
"Where we find ourselves today, is directly related to what we did yesterday... What we do tomorrow will directly relate to where we'll be in the future"
Thanks for the independant thinking
Very appropriate on July 4th :o) Blind faith from any side is not critical thinking. Thanks for the wake-up call!
Personally , I buy my gas at the cheapest place in town. If I'm going to save any money, it's going to be mine!
Thanks for sharing.
The fact that you're an Independent newbie with a strong message
may get you flamed here, but you bring up many good points.
And it sounds like you've been there, recently.
Is that true?
This is the first I've heard of Chavez's weapons arsenal, threats of war and his disregard
for human rights in Venezuela.
I, too, was under the impression that he was helping the poor as demostrated
by his gift of heating oil to low income families in the US.
I will check it out.
PS. You're right, everyone is a newcomer at some point in time. ;-)
Welcome
I will say that I agree totally and completly with you that Chavez is no angel, and definately not the kind of person that you want to admire. That being said, I think he has been demonized some by the right for being a "Leftist Dictator". To me, a dictator is a dictator, they are all bad. Chavez did sell poor Americans heating oil at un-gouged prices and that deservedly won him praise in some circles. I don't buy Citgo gas either, because around here they are just as high. So how does this sound, I won't buy Exxon, Shell, or Citgo!!!!
We have an unwritten rule at
We have an unwritten rule at Democrats.com: You are entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts.
When you make wild accusations about topics such as those listed in your points 1, 2, and 3, you need to post links to facts to back them up. And please, do not reply with "facts" as reported by Reporters Without Boarders, as they are a biased right-wing group most likely funded by the CIA.
Actually, you sound more like a Libertarian, or a Republican, than an "Independent." What do "Independents" stand for as a Party? Do they have an agenda, or are "Independents" just wearing the label of free thinkers on their foreheads and spouting opinions rather than facts? Or could it be that you are hiding behind the "Independent" label as many trolls and freepers do?
And I agree with Karin, your tone sounds very familiar, and I think that you have been here before under a different name. Care to share that with us?
I am not defending Chavez, but neither am I willing to throw him under the bus based on the rantings of an "Independent" who has no facts to support his diatribe.
How about scooters and Public Transit?
I'm planning on a scooter, like China, I can save on the out put of carbon and save on the gas I use because you go further on a gallon.
Bycycles and scooters sounds like a plan and they are cheaper than that expensive prius I simply cannot afford.
It's the scooter life for me. Peace!

Bolivarian Revolution
Latin American is turning left. The latest convert may be Mexico, where the populist Obrador is fighting to win election as president in a contest that brings back memories of Gore's situation in 2000.
The people of Latin America seem to have had it with the Washington Consenus (which has continually made the people more impovershed and the tiny comprador elite more wealthy), right-wing military dictatorships, death squads and US multinationals raping their countries of resources and suppressing the wages of workers. Argentina was the poster boy of the Washington Consensus until they defaulted on their debt in 2001. Kirchner forced the US banks to get back only 30% on the dollar, an unheard of settlement that detrimental to the US banks.
Chavez said in an interview on Democracy Now! that he's arming to defend Venezuela from a Bush invasion, which he says he has documenary evidence of the plans for. He's providing subsidized oil to Carribean and other Latin American nations often for barter; Cuban doctors to treat the poor for oil, for example. Chavez subsidized heating oil this past winter for some of the poor in Chicago, Boston and New York and was ready to offer help to the Katrina victims before FEMA went active. Unlike Bush, Chavez is popular with a significant majority of the population who mobilized in the streets to bring-down the Bush-backed coup in 2002. As cited in one of the articles below, Venezuela topped the list of Latin American countries whose population thought they lived in a democratic country. Chavez has even been working out an agreemet with Bush's favorite, Uribe of Colombia, to build a pipeline through Colombia to better serve the Asian energy market. As Bush is pouring in military aide, equipment and Special Operation Forces 'advisers' into Colombia, beefing-up the military in Venezuela would only be prudent. Chavez is also using his petrodollars to try to diversify the economy of Venezuela.
Venezuela has just joined Mercursor, a Latin American trading group that includes Brazil and Argentina, among other countries. Lula from Brazil has led the charge to sink Bush's Nafta-like Free Trade Agreement of the Americas. Lula's also in the forefront to develop strong economic ties with China and India, the economic growth dynamos of the 21st century. He's also organized resistence in the WTO to Bush bullying.
Morales of Bolivia plans on effectively nationalizing Bolivia's natural gas industry and get a higher royalty from only those multinational energy companies that will meet his conditions. A number of the mutinationals have opted-out, but are being replaced by the Chinese and Indians, which have at least talked of joining forces to provide there countries with energy security.
The dream of the Bolivarian Revolution is to integrate the economies of Latin America into something resembling the European Union. There's even talk of setting-up a multi-country parliament, again fashioned after the EU.
Latin American unity and independence falls afoul of US policy since the Monroe Doctrine. The Bush propaganda machine, the echo chamber of the MSM and the right-wingnuts have organized a Rovian smear and fear campaign against Chavez because he is the most flamboyant spokesman of the Bolivarian Revolution and has the petrodollars to set it in motion.
For a brief expose on Bush's policies in Latin America, you might want to pick-up the short book by Brig. Gen. Smedley D. Butler entitled "War is a Racket."
It is truly ironic for Bush and his thugs to talk about human rights violations. Bush and his father before him have harbored in the US the Cuban terrorists, the Contra terrorists and members of the Central American death squads sponsered by Negraponte in the 1980's. The latest is the US refusal to extradite a terrorist who blew-up a plane full of civilians back to Venezula where he was being imprisoned for his crime before his escape from custody because Venezuela might torture him. It would be laughable if it wasn't so sick with Gitmo and the other gulags, the extraordinary renditions, the casual torture of detainees who have neither been charged or convicted of any crime under Rumsfeld's and the military brass' written direction, Gonzales' memos and Bush's executive order authorizing disappearing anyone anywhere at Bush's whim and the massacres of civilians by occupation forces, all as part of Bush's so-called 'war on terror'.

Your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your sermons, hypocrisy-a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.
Jeff Cohen of Truthout
helps to set the record straight.
I also have thought the attacks on Chavez from most quarters seem very Rovian. It seems like anytime someone supports the people instead of the 1% richest, they get smushed to smitherenes by the media and organizations funded by 1% rich.
Jeff Cohen in his column in 2005 encouraging people to buy at Citgo got lots of emails from "angry rightests." He decided to take their advice and went to Venezuela to check it out for himself. His findings that he wrote about at the link below verify why buying at Citgo is probably a very good thing to do.

SPEAK TRUTHINESS TO POWER!!
MSNBC,CNN & FOX LYING ABOUT HOW THIS BOYCOTT DOESN'T HAVE EFFECT
I heard this pack of lies that if you buy from one station only, that all the money gets shared by all the other gas companies, for instance, I buy from CITGO and Exxon, Chevron or BP will all share in the profits because they all get the petrol from the same source. It is, of course more of their spin doctors at work overtime because the BUYCOTT DOES really work. KEEP BUYING CITGO and tell ALL your friends. I have been doing this now for 3 years and have been waiting for people to catch on. THANK YOU JEFF COHEN FOR THIS SITE!
ALSO A WARNING ABOUT 7 ELEVEN............ THEY ARE NOT USING CITGO, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE KEEPING THE CITGO SIGNS UP. ASK THEM INSIDE IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME. THEY SAID THEY WOULD DROP CITGO AFTER CHAVEZ CALLED BUSH "SATAN". I THINK THEY ARE ACTUALLY PUMPING EXXON (THE REAL ENEMY OF THE U.S. CITIZEN)
