Military Offers 15-Month Enlistments -- Meanwhile Appeals Court Upholds Extensions of Service
WASHINGTON (USA Today) - The Army, faced with a severe and growing shortage of recruits, began offering 15-month active-duty enlistments nationwide Thursday, the shortest tours ever. The typical enlistment lasts three or four years; the previous shortest enlistment was two years.
But wait a sec...can new recruits be so sure that it will be 15-months only?
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The U.S. military has the right to keep soldiers in service beyond their original contracted time by issuing so-called emergency stop-loss orders, a U.S. appeals court said on Friday.
The U.S. 9th Circuit of Appeals said the military acted within its rights when it ordered Emiliano Santiago, an Army National Guard sergeant, to remain in the service beyond the time of his eight-year contract after his unit was ordered to active duty.

Mad Dog sent me this...
Mad Dog sent me this... I wonder when the media will point out the hidden dangers in this new policy of enlisting for only 15 months active duty. Once they go into the active reserve for 2 years they are subject to a recall to active duty. The same thing happens if after 15 months plus 2 years they continue in the reserve or ng or the individual ready reserve. Based on the 9th circuit ruling they can also have their enlistments and active duty time extended by the military under stop loss. Under the rules set up, once your unit has been alerted for Iraq you can't get out. Its a sucker's bet.
It's a conservanazi trick.
It's a conservanazi trick. Don't do it. Once a person signs the paper, it's 15 months for sure, plus reserve duty, which can be another 2 years and a callup in the IRR, not even counting the "stop-loss" trick. It's just a trick to get them to join. Heck, I'll be the conservanazis will want these "15" month troopers to sign away their VA rights, also. Remember, bu$h supports the troops. My eye!
