Can the 'Nuclear Option' be pre-empted by a governor recalling Senators from DC?
The ongoing sound and fury of the wingnutters attacking the filibuster has reminded me of the brinkmanship of the Cold War with Stalinist Russia. With the hardliners in near complete control, and having no real "enemy" to confront and play bad boy with, they have turned their attentions to internal policy.
Along this line I got to thinking how the Democrat threat of "shutting down" the Senate seems a little weak as far as rhetorical device goes. If the filibuster is destroyed, erasing two hundred plus years of checks and balances, we descend into one party dictatorship with no protection for the minority from the "tyranny of the majority" that out Founders so despised.
So I'm wondering if the Democrats have the fortitude to raise the rhetorical level a notch and have a Democratic governor or two threaten to withdrawal their State's Senators from Washington if the R's move forward and try to ditch the filibuster?
The thought being THAT might get the wingers attention as to the severity of threat perceived by their attacks on the last remaining check to unbridled dictatorial control....
Course it would be dependant on the Dem leadership's "fortitude". Have in mind perhaps AZ or NM, where we have to Dem gov's with two R Senators apiece...
Talk about "nuclear option"! The repugants haven't seen a nuclear option...
