DeLay Threatens Judges in Schiavo Case

From the Center for American Progress:
On a day that should have been reserved for the Schiavo and Schindler families, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay again thrust himself into the limelight to issue a thinly veiled threat against judges. Following Terri Schiavo's death, DeLay released a statement warning that "The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior, but not today." This vague and provocative comment came in the midst of a broadside of attacks against those judges – several of them self-described conservatives appointed by conservative presidents – whom DeLay said typified "an arrogant, out of control, unaccountable judiciary." With attacks on judges increasing across the country, DeLay's rhetoric is the height of recklessness and poor judgment.

DeLay Calls For Judiciary Review
DeLay has asked the House Judiciary Committee to review these "errant" federal judges, and the Florida judiciary.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A19793-2005Apr1.html
What about an arrogant, out-of-control, unaccountable administration and its puppet Congress? These people are absolutely brazen when it comes to trashing the Constitution and its separation-of-powers provisions.
Threatening federal judges with a bogus review because the neocons don't agree with their verdicts is beneath contempt. DeLay is inciting the religious radicals who are just crazy enough to use his words as an excuse to undertake acts of extreme violence against these judges. That is seditious, irresponsible, and most likely illegal.
How long do you think that the FBI would wait before dragging an average citizen off for publicly threatening a judge?
Is it just me....
Is it just me, or were the judges that decided most of this fiasco Reagan and Bush I appointees? I think I read somewhere that the one vote for Terri Schiavo was made by a Clinton appointee. I am trying to peice together something to use in defense of checks and balances.
The last federal ruling, 10-2
The last federal ruling, 10-2 against hearing the case, of the two dissenting judges, one was a Clinton appointment and the other was a Bush recess apppointment.
The majority judges were from all of the above Presidents and Bush II.
Thank You
Thanks golfmonkey. That's the info. I needed. I work with a guy that handed me the "real" Schaivo story and almost started crying when he did it. Then I told him about Tom Delay's dad and the judges and he lost his fuckin' mind he was so angry.
Good Work
That's why
all cameras turned toward Rome.
I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. Dorothy Day

Every time they make a decision at least someone going to disagree! Should they be reviewed after every decision? Delay is needs to be shown the door!

Delay
Certainly, I do not agree with President Bush and the Republicans that back him in the very anti-freedom issues of today. From intruding into our privacy to blatantly ignoring the environment. And, last but not least the pending Bankrupcy act.
However, I do agree with Delay's feelings on the Judges we have today. And, I believe - they believe they are better than God. Truly if there was any question presented about Terri's husbands behavior in the past - he should not have anything to say about her living or dieing. Unless, of course, she had it in her will.
The Judges allowing her to die - were simply saying that "husbands know best". Kind of like the Scott Peterson syndrome. There is way too much of that today and to just believe everything Terri's husband said - plain ignorant or chauvinistic. If it wasn't written in her will - never should have been allowed. The fact that he did not let her family in when she was finishing her life here - the fact that he thought he was all she needed at the end - just plain insensitive and proved that he cared only about himself. The judges were wrong. And, as Terri's husband believes he is God - so do they.
Dear Independent:
1. Her husband was her legal guardian.
2. She's dead. Let it go.
Thank You
Thank you, now let's just pray they will shut up about this woman. I have a friend whose aunt is in the same shape,
This was total politics, nothing more nothing less crafted by Karl Rove and Delay was to carry out the plan. Delay did not hit his mark.
Now comes the blame game, Rove is secure, but Delay can be replaced.
Sounds like you have a little
Sounds like you have a little bit of the "god complex" yourself. Are you a part of the family? Did you speak with the doctors?
Who in the world are you to judge a very personal, on-going, and private family matter? How in the world do either you OR DeLay have the gall to question the judiciary?
No, Ms. Independent, you obviously consider yourself "better then God," because you have made a judgement without having ANY of the facts, much less an insight into what was in the "hearts" of those directly involved.
Geez, too bad she didn't leav
Geez, too bad she didn't leave her email address so that we could forward it to some more "independent" mailing lists. Not that I would advocate that or anything, because that would be wrong. Shucks...
Comparing Michael Schiavo to Scott Peterson. I got a good chuckle out of that. If we're allowed to make those kind of comparisons, what do you think of Dumbya vs. Vlad the Impaler?
Thanks a bunch for brightening my day, that was priceless.
I find it interesting when a
I find it interesting when a political topic is turned on its head.
Just so I don’t have to repeat this to everyone on the street (again): IF Terri’s husband tried to strangle her and IF all the judges over a decade and a half missed that, THEN it was wrong to listen to him. On the other hand, since I sit 1000 miles and 15 years away from this case I will have to assume our judges (appointed by various presidents) had the best shot at figuring out what Terri wanted. I’m funny that way.
Those damn activist judges.
Those damn activist judges. Where exactly do they get off acting like they can judge people like that? Doesn't the majority know that they are the minority?
Yeah stop judging people.
Yeah stop judging people.

Aw snap! Judge not lest ye be a judge, beyotch.

Cute! Seriously though, why are judges so judgemental? It's like they are playing god. If we want someone to make a judgement on a point of law can't we simply find someone.
Maybe we can get the MLB umpi
Maybe we can get the MLB umpires to judge. And I don't mean those wussies from the American League. I mean real judges like those in the National League, the ones who know what the real strike zone is. Knees to the letters, edge of the plate to other edge. How many times are those guys wrong, really?
I like. Come to think of it
I like. Come to think of it why do we need judges at all? Let's arm wrestle.
Mark this Entire Scenario up to Delay
My heart goes out to this family. But we just cannot lose our focus of what really happened.
Tom Delay is dodging the law. He is on the brink of being indicted in Texas and he just wants to shift the attention away from his situation. He lucked out, Terri and the Pope and Charles wedding. The man must be covered in teflon.
Tom Delay is the most dangerous man in America today. He is totally out of control. Trent Lott stepped down on an issue that is a non issue compared to what Delay is doing.
When George W. Bush realizes that his numbers are down and Delay is part of the problem, Delay will be history.
Tom Delay believes he is one of the untouchables. This is a man who owned or worked for a pest control company. How he got to Washington is a mystery to me, but he is causing alot of problems for Bush.
Wonder when we will see him fall.
Vlad the Impaler?
If I remember correctly, Vlad murdered hundreds of his own people and staked them around in the path of the invading turks. The Turks left Vlad's kingdom alone.
Do you think that Dubya is doing the same here with the Patriot Act.
Hey man, spin it any way you'
Hey man, spin it any way you'd like. I'm expressing my artistic freedom dude. Serious parallels can be drawn though. Whoa, it's freakin' me out.
Certainly I do not believe in
Certainly I do not believe in a god like you do.... but I do not understand why you think this person should be kept from her right to die is beyond my understanding... Personally I think she was already an Empty shell... but don't you believe in soul and afterlife? (I don't) Why would you want to stop her from reaching it? Is it morally right to prolong the suffering for the living cells, the emotions of ALL of the family, and the soul you believe in?
"I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies"
The Atheist Bible(My website)
Like you I am on the outs wit
Like you I am on the outs with a God. But I have found many who believe in an afterlife, including myself(call it a quantum soul) without using revealed word as a basis, as well as a multitude of varying opinions on that subject.
What I would like to know from these "believers", if Terri's brain was already dead, isn't it possible that her soul left a long time ago? Why, when the thinking part is gone, must we wait for the rest to stop working for the soul to move on.
Actually their is a chilling
Actually their is a chilling (for some) revelation in what you are dancing around: If one destroys a bit of the brain at a time the person you knew is reduced bit by bit. As you proceed more of the original person is gone. Why then when all of the brain is gone do we think SUDDENLY a new life appears, as in, the "after life." I believe a notion of a soul must come to grips with these simple facts. I do not want to start a wrestling match so I offer the above only to those who enjoy following the thread of logic wherever it may lead. And boy does it lead!
I this case
her Cerebral cortex was killed when the oxygen was cut off. The destruction of the physical brain is just, as the scientist might say, entropy in action, which progresses at a quicker or slower rate depending on the conditions. I prefer to believe that soul left at the quantum level when the ability to think and reason in this universe ended. Deep enough for ya!
Ah but you went to the end ga
Ah but you went to the end game. Try backing up a bit and thinking about what it implies about the soul. Here is what I think is critical: generally people consider the soul to be discrete. They track it mentally. This is "you", this is "you" sick, this is "you" going down hill, this is "you" dying, your dead and "your" soul is freed. Instead grapple with what the "you" is when the person is diminished for a long period. You see the soul is viewed as immutable if only implicitly yet we all watch as the person themselves can be diminished.
I don't play that game, quest
I don't play that game, questioning who "you" is. I had a bizarre experience 5 years ago during my meditations. I still can not verbalize the details, but suffice it to say, I now see my body as being very separate from "me". Yes, this "soul" interacts with my body because each supports the other. Or better yet, are chained to one another. Other people have to find their own connections, whether through religious belief or personnal insight.
When it comes down to it, we only have anecdotal evidence of a soul. Consider those that have life after death experiences. Many state that they experience hanging over their bodies and watching as the doctors attempt to revive them. Or those that wander around the hospital and remember various situations or physical items when they are revived. Maybe if enough blood is still available to the cerebral cortex during the revival process, than the full release of the quantum soul can not take place.
Consider this: Follow the an
Consider this: Follow the anecdotal evidence. A diminished person means a diminished soul. Now such a statement sounds horrible to most I am guessing but what it takes away it also yields back. Think about where that leads.
In experiments people have been put under intense magnetic fields capable of changing the electrical activity in the brain. The effects of out of body experiences, etc have been reproduced by changing the magnetic field.
Before all this sounds too cold on my part let me add that while I see no way in which the words natural and supernatural can be self consistently defined whilst also retaining their normal blurred connotations, EITHER one is equivalent. Shakespeare new this I think when he wrote: “For there was never yet a philosopher that could endure the toothache patiently.” Think again on these matters when you are burning up with fever or in gastrointestinal distress.
In following the “you” one dead simple example is the fact that you have effectively two brains which communicate via the corpus callosum. If you want to get really wierded out look into the studies that follow CUTTING that tie!
I reviewed the first study th
I reviewed the first study that was done using a cat's brain. And I will try to review more done on epileptics. But the gist of the studies seem to say that what is learned prior to cutting the corpus callosum is retained by both halves. If the studies are done on mature brains, I am not sure that your example supports your diminished body/soul theory.
I do not deny that illness can seem to weaken the brain. But people who have life after death experiences regularly report experiencing a great sense of relief. Perhaps illness only gives the impression of diminishing the "you" of the soul, when it only weakens the physical brain. A fully developed quantum soul may still be a separate entity locked inside the physical waiting for release.
We can't know when the quantum soul reaches it's maturity versus the physically mature brain. A mature quantum soul may not have the same meaning that we use to describe the physical body. It may not rely on knowledge or experience. I have often heard people describe themselves as having a young soul or an old soul.
Faith
By the way, I fully understand that what I propose has, at least at this time, no scientific backing (or any other for that matter). It also smacks of my starting my own religion. I am not. I only state that which I believe based on personal experiences. My own personal faith and nothing more.
Vince when I get a moment
Vince when I get a moment I will post more about this. I am wrestling with a new saw.
No need for disclamers. I think one can go further with what we already know. In addition I am tickled that once one lets go of some concepts various anomalies clear up. My main thrust here is to note that if you spoon out a part of the brain the person is changed. Why not assume the "soul" is changed other than shear stubbornness-not on your part but on all our parts. Spoon out some more and the person changes some more. Why should suddenly all be "restored". I put restored in quotes because it is not even as simple as saying the brain/soul is diminished as one spoons some of it out. People change their brains all the time. Some of what I am saying fits the idea of attempts to reach a higher consciousness or becoming more aware. Also suppose an accident changes a mean person and make them more humble. What would going back to a "restored" state mean? Maybe the person gets smarter but they return to being a jerk.

Just some interesting links on the topic, both pro and con.
Unfortunately, this is a big New Age topic right now. The first article is one I read 2 years ago, and I admit, it influenced some of my thinking on the topic. However, my experience was not near death and happened 3 years before that.
Saw is working but all adjust
Saw is working but all adjustments are off.
I'll check out the links when I get a chance. Thanks.
I should note that a lot of what I am saying has to do with firming up what we actually mean by the words we use. That helps with "supernatural" musings as well because when we speak of these things we are still using well worn concepts. I said it before: cartoons and heaven have a physics to them. The idea is that a lot of physics has to do with the way we order our thinking about ANY possible universe not just the one we find ourselves in.
Back to saw. Bleeding on keyboard as I managed to cut thumb. Not the dramatic way on the saw teeth but a burr.
(Oh I almost forgot: I know why I think this kind of discussion is relevant to www.democrats.com. I view it as a way to change the culture. To encourage thinking, etc. But when I walked away from this conversation somehow it also stimulated me to think of something from another thread. The Unintelligent design thread. Here goes: EVERYONE KNOWS THEY COME FROM A SINGLE CELL. WHY DOESN'T THAT BOTHER THOSE WHO ARE SO BOTHERED BY COMING FROM "LOWER ORGANSIMS.”)

Tom Delay is a dangerous man, don't forget that!
The Bible says to beware of false prophets. Do not think for one second that Tom Delay had any emotional ties to the Florida.
As goes the GOP,it is all smoke and mirros.
Tom Delay is a dangerous man and needs to go down like Trent Lott did. Karl Rove was the master mine on the Florida case, if it comes down to who will stay, Rove wil and they will throw Delay out with the baby' bathwater. The GOP has no ethics are loyalty when they realize that one of their own will cost them votes.
Glidden O'Connor stated:
We are all in a rush to do a living will, what if Tom Delay doesn't approve of it and overturns our decisions.
Delay is as crazy as Nixon. He is a dangerous man. All he wanted was to take our attention away from the truth that he may be indicted in Texas.
Sheep.....bahhhhhhh.....Don't trust any Republican. We must be vigilant.
While the Pope lies in state, check and see what Congress is trying to do us, you will be very surprised. But that is the GOP way. The old shell game and the voters fall for it. WAKE UP AMERICA! DON'T YOU SEE YOU HAVE BEEN LIED TO.....THINK ABOUT THIS. TO THINK THAT DELAY DID THE RIGHT THING I SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH. AGAIN, HE IS DANGEROUS.
Ya know your post got me thin
Ya know your post got me thinking. If Delay is a dangerous man and he costs the Republican's votes then let him. I think a way to accomplish the above while STILL throwing the bum out is for Democrats to use the name Delay at every turn in our bad mouthing, but always precede it with "Republican" Delay. Always finish with how symptomatic this is of the Republican Party. If we vilify Delay too much alone then yes we will get him ousted but the populace might consider him simply a bad apple.
Delay style Republican
Better yet. You hear about "Roosevelt" Dem's or "Truman" Dems.
Why not "Delay" Republicans?
If you cowtow to rich special interests, you're a Delay Republican.
If you take expensive trips on the interests money, you're a Delay Republican.
If you're DLC and you do the same as Delay, you're a Delay Democrat.

Good thoughts! I like the inclusion of the DLC.
Should that catch on let's morph it into Bush Republicans. With Bush down it's time to force all these yahoos to sink with the captain.
AAAAARRRRRGGGGG!!!!!!
No I don't think so. In some ways, labeling them Bush Republicans gives them a better rep in the south than they deserve. Highlight the ethics issues of Delay, and pin that label on all of them.
My Rep is Judy Biggert and she is a Delay Republican.

Ah, but you assume that Congressional Repugs are falling with him. Therein lies the rub. As much as I wish this were true, I will remain the pessimist. Since incumbent representatives usually win re-election whether they ride the coat tails or not, I believe they need a more potent poison to knock them off.
Dennis Hastert is a Delay Republican. Delay's ethics issues are Hastert's ethics issue.
Talk to me in a few hours.
Talk to me in a few hours. By the Bush et al should have done something that gets me pessamistic again.
Can someone please tell me what the Republicans do for the South?
Gays-both parties say vote for what you want.
Guns-both parties say keep your guns. Dems say you are responsible for your gun.
Religion: Dems say freedom. Reps say you must pray as Robertson prays!
On every other issue the South is screwing itself by going with these loser Republicans. Hopefully all of America is wising up to them in spite of a useless press.

As BG would say, you are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts. These come directly from Florida.
I, as well as everyone here, are tired of correcting the misinformation out there. But I will continue to do so because this case is very important. As I have said before, I hope my wife will do for me what Terri's husband did for her.
Thanks Vince
Maybe you should just keep that info where you can reach it in a moment and provide the information to those who need it, so that we won't have to talk about Schiavo again.
