Background

In response to President Bush's promise to veto supplemental appropriations for the ongoing occupation of Iraq, Senators Feingold and Reid have now drafted legislation that will effectively end the current military mission in Iraq and begin the redeployment of U.S. forces.

Their bill requires the President to begin safely redeploying U.S. troops from Iraq 120 days from enactment, as required by the emergency supplemental spending bill the Senate recently passed. The bill ends funding for the war, with three narrow exceptions, effective March 31, 2008.

It's clear that the vast majority of Americans disapprove of President Bush's handling of Iraq. Regrettably, the President refuses to change course, stubbornly thinking that throwing even more money and troops into a failed occupation will somehow produce different results. Our troops are now caught in the middle of a civil war.

If President Bush does, in fact, veto the recently passed supplemental appropriations bill - thus cutting off funds for the troops - then the Senate needs to take action to end the occupation quickly.

I'm writing to ask that you publicly announce your support for the legislation proposed by Senators Feingold and Reid that will require the President to begin safely redeploying our troops out of Iraq within 120 days.

President Bush says he will veto the supplemental appropriations bill, thus cutting off funding for the troops. Since he refuses to accept Congress' conditions for continuing the occupation, it's time for the occupation to end.

Its unfortunate that many in Congress just can't see that there simply is no strategy for victory, nor realistic way for our overburdened military to occupy and rebuild the entire nation of Iraq. The nation-building opportunity we had immediately after the invasion has now been squandered, and our troops are now caught in the middle of a civil war.

Therefore, I ask that you get behind the Feingold-Reid proposal to begin safely redeploying our brave troops out of Iraq as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing your response to my letter.
