What a Hell of a Year! Good Riddance to It!

By Dave Lindorff

You know, the year 2009 started out kind of nicely. We watched Barack Obama take the oath of office, serenaded by the awesome Aretha Franklin (wearing her awesome hat), after first hearing Pete Seeger sing the real Woody Guthrie verses to "This Land Is Your Land" on the steps of the Lincoln Monument.

And we saw Congress pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, to correct a scum-sucking decision by the US Supreme Court's conservative woman-hating, corporation-loving majority that said women (and minorities and the elderly) couldn't sue for pay discrimination unless they acted within six months of the initiation of the violation, even if they didn't learn about it until years later.

Great stuff.

But basically, that was it. The promise of an Obama Presidency, and of the huge new Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, came and went like the puff of dust from a dessiccated puffball, leaving behind nothing but a leathery dry little husk of fungus--an apt description of Democrats in Washington today.

Since then we had the pathetic stimulus package that hasn't stimulated, and the continuation of the Bush/Paulson bank bailout--the gift that keeps on giving to Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, B of A, Wells Fargo and the other greedhead banks that created the current financial disaster that has thrown a fifth of the American workforce out of their jobs and that has put a quarter of all homeowners underwater, with mortgage balances larger than the value of their shrivelled homes. We've got a whole new war--actually the old mini-war in Afghanistan now ramped up by Obama and his Democratic backers into a major war--and the old war in Iraq sill chugging along, and maybe even a new one in Yemen or a bigger one in Iran. And of course we've got no health care reform, though they're calling the crappy legislation working its way through Senate and House "health care reform."

What a sorry joke.

You can't wish anyone a Happy New Year tonight with a straight face. How can it be happy if we're blowing up innocent people, our own young soldiers, and a couple hundred billion dollars of taxpayer money in the coming year for nothing except to allow Obama to prove how tough he is? How can it be happy if the criminal banking syndicates are having their best year ever, and if their executives are raking in obscene bonuses, while homeowners cannot even refinance their crooked mortgages while rates are being kept low? How can it be happy if what Congress and the President are calling a health reform bill is going to leave tens of millions of Americans uninsured, while it extorts hundreds of billions from the rest of us in order to subsidize crummy insurance for poor people--insurance that they too will have to pay for with money they don't have, or face heavy fines from the IRS? This is health reform? Please.

No. Let's face it: 2010 is going to be a terrible year. Count on it.

The only hope is that maybe we somnolent Americans will fianlly be shaken from our television-induced torpor by a further economic crash, by the complete takeover of our government by corporate interests, and by the increasing death toll of American military personnel in Afghanistan, and will finally rise up and reject it all.

Imagine millions marching on Washington to demand a public jobs program, and Medicare for All! Imagine millions of people sitting down and blocking the main entrance to the Pentagon. Imagine President Obama being shouted down when he tries to give a public address--not by one lone House representative shouting out "liar!" but by the assembled masses. Imagine the needy public and young idealistic physicians taking over hospitals and dispensing free care. Imagine voters simply turning out of office every member of Congress who voted for war funding, the health care bill or the bank bailout. That would virtually mean a clean sweep of Congress, which is what we need right now.

And that's what we need in 2010. Not a Happy New Year, but a radical and explosive one.

So that's my wish to one and all. Get pissed. Take action. Let's make 2010 a year we can cheer about!

Clean Sweep, Then What

After you remove all of congress and replace them with God knows what you want in place, what do you do then?

Really Lindorff, If you tried, you could come up with quite a number of good things that this congress and Obama has accomplished this year, or at least started in process of improvement. If not I will be happy to point them out once again for you.

Sure we did not get everything we tried for, but come on, no one gets everything they want.

Complete replacement of congress seems like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There are a good number of congressional people that just need a lot more support from us.

Quit worrying that the corporations are taking over our country. Corporations have always been a thorn in the side of government as has the richest percentage.

Americans are far from allowing our country to be ruled by corporations.

All you will accomplish by asking people to vote everyone out of congress is to replace them with republicans because the republicans have no interest in voting out their people in congress.

Slow down on all the ( we are doomed speeches).

Whenever i have had a thorn stuck in me i try to remove it. Otherwise the wound tends to get infected.

Action without alot of biased coverage is the medicine for this

Action without a lot of "advertising" using people power and flexing the legal muscle. When you go in an old corrupt haunted HOUSE, you have to watch out for all the pitfalls and loopholes. They've been putting this crap in since the before the sixties, and just having us go to jail. But as I said, walking softly, legally where no escape from the law is available. Did you see Arianna's call to move the savings to credit unions, and out of the big four on Wall St?

Have any of you put your money where your mouth is yet? I'm a action person, and while I love you guys cause some of the top minds come here to discuss issues, but if the MEDIA stations don't cover the movement, it won't be televised. Remember they are part of those same corporatations all interwoven in the web of deceipt.

Get out of the web and get rid of the spiders that weave the lies to the people.

2010 elections are about that. You can't just rip the steering wheel, when turning out the ditch, you have to slowly straighten the wheels.

Also, everytime OUR President manages to wrestle the bulls on Wall ST, he is met with the most vile vipers of the conservative reicht, that have carefully brainwashed or as Batsh8 Bachmann does, "let me explain it to ya"

Poking the cancer doesn't cure or excise it. LIKE in the campaign, the people must practicly stumble upon those truths in their site. Now I don't know them, but I have stumbled on the far reicht sites,(they own personal info via corporations gathering) You have to sign up and post credible information and links. This is what WE call Seal ing their own doom, when they hypocriticly make statements. as in: "Straight out the HORSES or Ar$3s Mouth" Very effective. You have to grab the insane by whatever common sense there is and show or educate them to the truth.
This is what the rest of the nation is now doing by boycotting the banks, to break the tentacle, that leeches every month from our budget.

Don't get pissed, that was sooo....2006. Get Even Legally, with laws on the "above the law breakers" and equal justice in sentencing. FAct is the tougher laws will charge them millions per client they "swindle" but with the reicht wing news and talking points, and people like Michele Malkin on C-span, where the right that wanted truth have been guidee by "me and others" to get that "straight out the horses mouth, lesson.
We are fignting back by keeping the truth out there just as you are david, but like WE did when WE got Nixon, we walked softly, and followed the laws. What's good for US geese, are also good for the Status Quo Ganders. Like I said on my New Years Internet Radio Show yesterday. "Progress Takes Time" We cannot foist as the reicht does, WE must let their voters know they are being hoodwinked by using their reps own words.

Sleezyman is history in "any" voters party, as he has disgusted Americans in how one man who voted for Israel to have universal healthcare, to deny US OURS.

I play them against them selves when the tro//s come along, and leave lots of truth links. Don't just hang out with US papers, owned by Murdock INC. Global News, and Democracy NOW are excellent sources as well as the Progressive/liberal/pissed off Republicans turned independent bloggers making the call for solutions that WE can do legally and might I add, quite easily, transfer our funds to community supporting banks and credit unions that have a 3-5% staff pay and is owned by the depositors.

Another view with tunnel vision. I guess it makes people happy when they can JUST cherry pick the kind of government they would personally aprove of. They appear to have nothing in common with the realities that the rest of us have forced upon us by this model government they have chosen to beleive actually exists.

I see today's government as a "Government, by the Government, for the Government". Nothing more, but, owned and controlled by Corporate America. When the appointed leadership, takes big $$$$ from Big business, they are tied in to support whatever their contributors decide. Thidincludes our new president also.If anyone beleives otherwise, look at what these elected officials are trying to force upon us with their healthcare SHAM. Look at their donations from the healthcare industry.

Our Constitution states it very plain, a Government, of the PEOPLE, for the PEOPLE. I challange anyone to point out ANY input whats-so-ever to the healthcare debate. In reality, the public was thrown out, arrested, and prohibited to partcipate in any discussions about the so-called healthcare debate. Does this sound like our elected officials stood up for us, or did their promise to repay the $$$ to Corporate America, with their votes, win out for Corp Amr.

I totally agreewith David's comment. If your elected official excepted any contributions from Corp Amr, they HAVE already sold out the American People, and will do it again. Kick their A_SSES out on the street. They do not represent the public anymore.

There are a few, count them on one hand, that try to do their jobs, and represent their constituents. They nare so far out numbered, only not re-electing them will we take our government back from the hands and $$$ of Corp Amr.

They turned OUR people's gov into a corporation

So if they did that, the only solution is to "vote their chairman and women out"  You can't have a chairman, if they don't have a seat to sit in.

But just throwing them out without carefully vetted new candidates to replace them is not for the good of the country. So if you see the replacement isn't drawing the people, they must withdraw, to keep the current majority in.  I think the older codgers like Dodd and Frank, are scared sh8less and they're seats are up for grabs as they were what are called the paid watchers.  They watched and when they had the chance to speak up, remained silent for donations.  This is the type that must go as OUR children will not have as much history on these candidates and they ARE our messy officials to kick out. They failed us with our trust and even if they weren't aware, shouldn't there be new people that will be wide awake and trying to keep their jobs.  These fat cats have gotten lazy. The fight isn't in them for justice.

Progress in the Equal Justice of this country is OUR goal also, so why copy or mimic the right by whinning without any cheese.

WE are Dems, grow a set and keep push for the people.  They are as strong as OUR support allows and when WE don't, the right's misleading chips away points.  So stop helping them sink our country.

Stop whinning and keep on truckin!  A foot in the door, beats a slammed in the face door any day.  Progress takes time, it's ONLY been one year and the jobs are now on line to start before the end of february 2010.  But if you make them think they have to really campaign hard to beat the other side, they will think they need more money to hold onto their seat.

Just a little observing from all sides, as I am Progressive/Moderate.

Believe in taxes for services for the people, but not the the taxes that do nothing for the communities.

LOL!

I was just thinking about the portion of your blog concerning the wars and the possible future wars that the Obama administration is involved in.  I'm wondering why anybody even believes in killing for a purpose?  Sometimes I just wonder if everybody has forgotten the lessons learned in sunday school about treating others with respect, etc.  Let's hope this healthcare reform, whichever version passes, does good and doesn't cause a tax increase.  Let's find a way to get out of these wars without giving up on our goals.  Then maybe we can have the good year you are calling for.
