We need a new party, ?? Social Democrats

In 2006 and 2008 Democrats won. Yet corporate money going to anti-Democratic groups and to the pockets of our Congressional representatives has trumped the votes of the people. Getting health care reform, getting out of Iraq, not staying in Afghanistan to mention a few are failing or being watered down to the point where they are not significant. Private insurance kills thousands per year and the wars kill our citizens based on decisions of politicians who don't do the dying. Do you want to keep winning at the polls and losing when your selected representative fails to keep his/her promises.?? I don't . Listen to Bernie Sanders. He speaks truth to the system but he is in a small minority. It is possible to have a government that focuses first on the social needs of the people and second on the needs of the capitalists and have it work quite well -- for the people and the capitalists. Europe has seen the value in providing a real safety net for the citizens. We can do this but a radical change has to take place. We need to get angry and start non-violent resistance to a political system that ignores the wishesof the majority. Is there anybody out here in Internet land willing to really fight for dumping our current system.?? $1.00 more on gas will fund health care. Stopping the wars in the middle east will fund health care. A modest increase in taxes, as has been done in Europe, can fund the social programs. This can't be done if the focus is on fixing a Democratic Party. If you enjoy living in a delusion crafted by many that the present system is fixable if only we did this or that then you are wasting your energy on fantasy. It is broken. Let's start to replace it. The fact that a branch of our current government representing large pieces of land but the smallest number of people can kill all the efforts to create a moral healthy care system for all Americans is sick. The Senate Finance Committee is just that -- a non representative group that can kill health reform. In it's preset form this system is not fixable. Old men with 11 or more terms in Congress, income from lobbyists and a great health care system will not help you. all you will get are promises to be broken after elections. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.

I was thinking

That we should change our flag and take the stars off of it and replace them with dollar signs since that is the only thing that matters to most of our representatives in government.

Remind Your Rep/Senator You Know How Much They Bribed Him

Here's an idea for a grass-roots campaign: every time we sign one of these petitions, let's go to www.opensecrets.org and find out how much that person may have received from the corporation in question, i.e., insurance companies, and remind him of that in the part of the letter that we can personalize.

And remember it if you are lucky enough to have primary elections in your district where conservative Democrat incumbents are challenged.

SENATOR TOM CARPER MUST GO

spktruth200:

Tom Carper has received millions from insurance companies, big pharma, credit card and banksters. Delaware is a blue state, with majority supporting the Public Option. (Medicare for all). We have a single payer bill before our legislature SB 120. Carper has so much influence here he has managed to keep our bill from being scored.

Carper is one of the worst blue dogs. His Opt In/Opt Out scheme is just another scam. You can bet Delaware will be the First State to opt out. We have a petition online to demand the Democratic Party find a candidate to run against this repuke in dem clothing. He refuses to hold town meetings, goes on local talk radio and TAKES NO CALLS! Hiding from his constituents...an embarassment for Delaware and the nation.

A good first step: campaign finance reform

Our system is broken. A huge part of the problem is that it costs millions of dollars to run a campaign for Congress. Big campaign cash comes from corporations who expect the candidate, once elected, to protect the vested interests of the corporations who financed their campaign or else those funds will dry up when it comes time for them to stand for re-election.

This is why we see bailouts for Wall Street and hedge fund investors, but not for homeowners.

This is why bankruptcy laws were written by banks and credit card companies - who made lavish contributions to Congress while that bill was being negotiated.

This is why under Medicare Part-D, the federal government is prohibited by law from negotiating lower prices for prescription medicines - a back room deal, the payoff for pharmaceutical companies for their contributions to campaigns and lobbyists.

This will all continue to be true even if we introduce a third or fourth party. In fact, that new party will not have the ghost of a chance for success unless we first change how campaigns are financed. Those of us who would like to see a viable Progressive Party or Social Democrats, or whatever, should first work to achieve campaign finance reform.

The Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) would publicly fund all races for the U.S. Senate and House, paid for by a tax on the largest media conglomerates. It would allow candidates to run a viable campaign for elected office with a mixture of small donations and limited public financing. Candidates would qualify for limited public funds by raising a specific number of small donations from members of their communities. Once qualified, they would receive a four to one match on the small donations, and be prohibited from taking any large donations.

Modeled on successful programs that are law in seven states and two cities, the Fair Elections Now Act would free our elected officials from the fundraising treadmill and allow them to focus on the challenges we're up against and their constituents' needs.

If you want to change our system, and you want to be successful at it, start with campaign finance reform.
