a little reading before and after June 25 torture accountability rallies
A little reading before the rally in Wash DC 11am John Marshall Park 501 PA ave, NW (next to Canada Embassy). Tabling beginning at 9am continuing after 12pm. March to Justice Dept 12 noon.
I first heard Repub talking points against transferring GuantanamoJTF camp x-ray terror suspects to USA prisons in a May 9, 2009 weekly radio response to one of Pres Obama's weekly radio addresses. c-span.org does archive weekly Pres addresses and opposing party responses. Can also watch at youtube.com/watch?v=pqtDIEH_Jpo .
The real fear of Repubs, in my view, is that transferring terror suspects to USA prisons is one of the final nails in the coffin, or last shovelfuls of Bush anti-terror (GWOT) policies onto the ash heap of history. The whole reason for detention off USA soil was to avoid USA domestic criminal legal system in favor of military tribunals/commissions that allow torture-based evidence from interrogations. In 2004 a supreme court decision granted detainees habeas corpus rights (Hamdan case?) that the lame-duck (December after election session) 2006 congress overturned with the Military Commissions Act. That USA domestic criminal legal system has achieved convictions of terror suspects before like Omar Rahman (blind sheik 1993 WTC bombing), Ramzi Yousef (same 1993 bombing), Richard Reid (shoe bomber), and Zacarias Moussaoui when used by Clinton and W Bush (raisin brain) administrations. Lynne Stewart was Omar Rahman's lawyer and went to jail for contempt rather than reveal her conversations with Rahman to prosecutors. She is a hero for the attorney-client privilege. Other very dangerous convicts are held in USA supermax or max prisons.
Fear of releasing any more torture pictures by Obama administration is rooted in a sense that the pictures, some already released (http://georgewashington2.blogspot.com/2009/05/here-are-few-of-torture-photos-obama.html), in combination with closing Guantanamo JTF camp x-ray and Obama's release of torture memos in April after other memo releases March 2, will be tipping points to shift public opinion from simply historical accountability for Bush administration war crime suspects to legal accountability (prosecution). See mcjoan "The OLC Memos and State Secrets"www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/3/3/162038/0212

Obama administration fears that public opinion shift to legal accountability (prosecution) won't also carry over into electoral support for 2010 midterm and 2012 reelection given conservative Repub media ownership and resulting influence on public opinion. That conservative Repub-owned media push-back was started by Limberger "I want him to fail" comment, 'socialism' red-baiting of policy proposals and bill introductions and 'teabagging' Fox Opinion Channel-organized April 15 rallies. I call Limbaugh Limberger because his politics stink like limberger cheese.
Obama's CHANGE policy framework is actually a RETURN to older (traditional) American national security and foreign policy, as well as domestic policy values before the W Bush admin corrupted them for big profits for the few at the expense of the many.
