Help Wanted 2012

Wanted: Presidential candidate for 2012 who will implement the promises made by Barack Obama in regard to civil rights for the GLBT community, who will actively support the prosecution of those in past or present administrations who have committed criminal acts, who will demonstrate a commitment to single payer health care, who will cease billion dollar bailouts for those who have cheated and robbed average Americans for years, who will cease supporting and expanding "faith based initiatives" with taxpayer monies.

Democrats need to start looking for a presidential candidate who truly reflects the ideals of progressive democrats.  Obama is not that person.  Day by day it becomes more clear that Obama's administration is merely a continuation of the George W. Bush administration.

Orofino2, Considering the evidence we have already seen...

you couldn't have said it better.

A mind once expanded can never return to its original dimensions.

Anne Hathaway: 1556-1623

The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.

Thanks

Good to hear from one who supports my expression. Among my democratic friends, there is growing disatisfaction with this president. He will soon start paying the price if he doesn't change his ways and attempt to live up to his campaign rhetoric especially in regard to civil rights issues.

Wanted: Presidential candidate for 2012

Pat I  totally agree with you.  He needs to know how much he's hurt the community that helped put him where he is.  AND he must turn himself around to work for us NO matter what the consequences are for him politically he needs to make our community, GLBT, whole.  He needs to show the world our Amercian dream includes every one of us AT THE SAME TIME!  Not next week after he fixes health care, or next month after he gets our financial sytem in order, or in three months when he saves all the banks, or even when he makes the GOP happy!!  WHICH will never happen!  He has to show his support now and BRING all the Democrats with him and those Republicans who believe in Civil Rights for everyone.  He needs to show his leadership for those who voted for him and his "CHANGE" campaing promise.

There is more Obama-bashing

There is more Obama-bashing and anti-Democratic rhetoric on Democrats.com and Democratic Underground than exists on even the most rabid neoconservative radio and TV shows, and Internet sites. Since he is facing accusations of Socialism from the Far-Right, and Fascism from the Far-Left, he must be doing something right for Middle Americans.

With less than five months into his presidency, the Far-Left is calling for President Obama’s replacement because he hasn’t gotten around to their pet peeves as yet. As for one of the “pet peeves” of this particular post, see this recent development:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/06/16/obama.same.sex.benefits/index.htm...

While this single gesture may not be ALL that you asking for, which Republican would have had the fortitude to take even this small step in the direction of total equality?

Just as O’Reilly and his ilk incite the Far-Right crazies to irresponsible behavior, these “anti-everything” Far-Left blogs and diatribes only add fuel to the extremists’ fire.

From the Rules of Democrats.com:

(1) President Obama is the first Democratic president to call himself a progressive. But we recognize he is not as progressive as many of us here at Democrats.com, and we disagree (sometimes strongly) with some of his policies, Senate votes, and appointments. It is within our rules to criticize President Obama for specific actions and to urge him to take more progressive actions. But it is against our rules to misrepresent his actions, smear him, or attack him. If you disagree with an action he takes, please offer specific constructive criticism with your preferred alternative and explain how it could realistically pass Congress - rather than simply attack without offering politically realistic alternatives. The best use of our forums is to intelligently discuss the merits of various alternatives. If you do not cannot support President Obama and accept occasional disappointments like a thoughtful adult, please find another online community to participate in.

Facts

Bill Harding: Your statement about Obama-bashing is not based on fact. My comments about Obama are based on fact. My post is not about a pet peeve; it is a message to the Obama administration/ supporters that the candidate for whom many of us worked very hard, is not living up to his stated commitments to civil rights, one of the easier of the problems facing him to correct. Either his statements were only campaign rhetoric to gain support of minority groups, or he is attempting to appease the right wing in order to succeed in other areas of reform. Either way, we cannot evaluate his action/inaction with pride.

Pat McCallister

Your call for replacing

Your call for replacing President Obama in 2012 is, in fact, bashing, AND is against the Rules of Democrats.com.

Over 60% of Middle Americans disagree with you (you know, those of us who also worked hard for his election) and support our Liberal Democratic President:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/06/17/politics/main5094528.shtml?tag...

I like your logic.

I just think you are missing pieces.
-------------------------------------------------

Those who change things are those who BOTH get elected (here rhetoric matters) and retain the political capital to implement change (here past rhetoric needs to have split hairs).

The splitting of hairs comes from the 50%/50% nature of our elections. Nobody got elected, but Obama. You didn't. I didn't. The question now is, what can Obama gain Gay folks?

His past rhetoric both gained him the election, primed Gay folks for gains, AND braced those who oppose gains for Gays!

Obama is presently enacting gains. Too damned small to please some folks. Too damned big to please others. If Obama struck the correct balance then those small gains will STICK. He will have forced a cultural change while retaining the support of those he carried the ball for. (If only for a few yards).

-------

As to whether Obama is appeasing the Right: He damned well better be appeasing the Right, as the Right are folks that you and I must die for, if need be. They are fellow Americans.

Now if we are going to argue about the degrees of appeasement, I might easily fall into full agreement with you. One does not try to appease scum bags for example!

-------

I have found that discussions about Bush and Obama, or any human being for that matter is fraught with difficulty.

I would suggest that democrats.com members put forth the alternative path they desire of their president, that both has a chance of passing the House/Senate AND of surviving the election of a new government in the next cycle.

Jim

Sheesh!

OBAMA HAS BEEN IN OFFICE FOR 5 MONTHS, so chill out. This issue falls somewhere behind getting everyone their job back, getting everyone health care, getting us out of a ridiculous war, and fixing a completely broken government. Take a number and chill out.

I think it is very premature to be looking for his "replacement"

President Obama inherited the biggest mess any POTUS has in recent history.

His job is not done, far from it.

orofino2, your words imply that you WANT Obama to be like Bush.

I don't want Obama to "implement the promises made by Barack Obama" because the breathlessness of the opening post implies a time scale which places instant gratification OVER the ability of our culture to adjust.

I did not want an emperor Bush, and I do not want an emperor Obama. A Presidential decree about Gay folks will not change the lay of the political landscape. Push too hard and the next President will simply yank us back.

Suppose however that Obama and I are incorrect. Then we are being careful (in order to make lasting gains), but have simply miscalculated that a decree will last. This makes us incorrect, but none the less progressive.

-----------

I agree that Obama is wrong if he does not prosecute "those in past or present administrations who have committed criminal acts".
-----------

On health care, I hear the chatter, but have yet to hear folks engage about the fundamentals when they post about health care. That is, unless the conversation has been reduced to "Single Payer".

My fundamental stance is that many folks in health care (including insurance companies, etc) would proceed in their labors for far LESS money and this in turn would make health care more affordable for the majority.

I do NOT demand that Obama achieve that end via any particular mechanism.

-----------

I agree that theives should not be paid. Can you be very specific because a bailout bails out quite a few folks - including the good guys.

-----------

I agree with your anti "faith based initiatives" stance. Post more so that I can become pissed off.

-----------
Obama is a thoughtful man. I too am a careful sort. This fully explains Obama's behavior.

An alternative theory is that Obama is to the Right. This may also explain his behavior.

Let's keep our eyes open.

I'm sure I'm also a disappointment because I'm NOT Anti War. (Specific Wars...YES)

It may just be that I'm Progressive but dancing to another drummer.

Jim
