Nonviolence Now

By David Swanson

Change is in the air. How about a change away from violence?

The state of Georgia is preparing to execute a man widely known to almost certainly be innocent. Here is an Amnesty International report on the case of Troy Davis. And here are things you can do to try to prevent this murder, this state killing, this official lynching in the twenty-first century.

And if you don't live in Georgia, don't get too self-satisfied. All of us are currently engaged in killing innocent men, women, and children every day in Iraq. Our representatives kill them with bombs and guns, and with the destruction of their economy, denial of electricity and clean water. We have killed over a million people and driven over four million from their homes. Most of those four million would like to return but are afraid to do so. The first step in ending this massive violence and in shifting our resources to saving lives at home and around the world is withdrawing American troops and mercenaries from Iraq. We know this, and we are about to vote for it in the third consecutive U.S. election. We must insist on it.

The less belligerent of our two war-making political parties appears poised to win the White House and additional seats in Congress. And I have already argued that the election fraud the Republicans are known to be engaging in renders any claim to victory for McCain-Palin illegitimate, even should the polls swing dramatically their way in the next week and a half. I proposed in the same article that we stage a nonviolent protest in Washington, D.C., in the event of a fraudulent outcome. Other possible locations for nonviolent action around the country are expected to be organized and posted online. And already police around the country are predicting violent riots in the event of a McCain "victory."

The only way we will successfully resist stolen elections, wars, Wall Street rip-offs, or the execution of innocents, the only way we will achieve nonviolence, is through nonviolence. If this election is stolen, that fact will be more obvious to more people than last time. Many will want to object, and some will be tempted to do so violently. People will need to be organized and focused by activists who understand the power and the techniques of nonviolence. That same discipline and courage may be needed just to resist police and Republican intimidation when attempting to vote.

The idea that our only options are acquiescence or violence ignores the Indian victory over British rule, the Polish victory over Soviet rule, the resistance to Nazism of the Danes, Dutch, and Norwegians, the popular overthrow of dictatorships in El Salvador and Guatemala, the restoration of rights in Argentina and Chile, the return of democracy to the Philippines, the reversal of a French coup in Algeria, the Czech and Slovak end to occupation, the workers' victories in Namibia or on U.S. farms, the end of Apartheid and Jim Crow, the people's struggles in Latvia, Russia, Thailand, and Serbia, the eight-hour day, the weekend, women's suffrage, and on and on.

I don't care what new weapons the U.S. military and "homeland security" possess. They are no more powerful to stop a people's uprising than were fire hoses to stop the civil rights movement. But we must be so consistently nonviolent that provocateurs stand out and are disciplined by us. If we are nonviolent and fearless, and if we are strategic -- applying our force where needed, and if we persevere in the face of repression, we cannot lose.

The title of this book has it right: "A Force More Powerful: A Century of Nonviolent Conflict," by Peter Ackerman and Jack Duvall (also available as a video), and this book is invaluable: "Waging Nonviolent Struggle: 20th Century Practice and 21st Century Potential" by Gene Sharp. And you can never read this one too often: "A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr." Let's hope none of the lessons found in these books are needed on November 5th. Let's realize that they will all be needed during the coming months regardless of election outcomes.

are you serious?

let him die...and get a life for yourself...do you think people are going to see you as the savior of this man?

I happen to be pro death penilty in theory.

I do worry when I actually look at what passes for some trials however.

It might scare the shit out of you as well if you looked closely.

I can't comment on this case as I know nothing about it.

Food for thought:When the

Food for thought:

When the State is proven to have executed an innocent individual, is that not by definition, second-degree murder, or at the very least manslaughter? If so, who should be charged with the crime, and what should the penalty be?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrongful_execution

lol!

Interesting thought.

Oddly enough, it is a similar thought that supports a pro death penalty stance in theory. (Yeah, yeah, I'm being a weasel by using that phrase;)

I thank you for that idea Bill. I must absorb that into my thinking. Minimally it properly puts all of us in the seat of RESPONSIBILITY.

Jim

P.S. If I am going to tell the gun nuts to be responsible for their guns (they get it stolen, THEY should pay) then I had better absorb what you note.

"It is a similar thought..."

"It is a similar thought..." is exactly my point. You know: goose and gander, tit for tat, etc.

It seems to me that, just like being "a little bit pregnant," we shouldn't expect to be a little bit pro-death penalty.

Too exhausted to provide treatise on "in theory"

So I'll just poke a stick in the eye of gun nuts by simply printing the news:

Boy, 8, Killed in Gun Show Accident
By SUSAN HAIGH

AP

WESTFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 27) - With an instructor watching, an 8-year-old boy at a gun fair aimed an Uzi at a pumpkin and pulled the trigger as his dad reached for a camera.

It was his first time shooting a fully automatic machine gun, and the recoil of the weapon was too much for him. He lost control and fatally shot himself in the head.
Now gun safety experts — and some gun enthusiasts at the club where the shooting happened — are wondering why such a young child was allowed to fire a weapon used in war. Local, state and federal authorities are also investigating whether everyone involved had proper licenses or if anyone committed a criminal act.

Plot to Kill Obama Uncovered, Feds Say

By LARA JAKES JORDAN

AP
WASHINGTON (Oct. 27) - Two white supremacists allegedly plotted to go on a national killing spree, shooting and decapitating black people and ultimately targeting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal authorities said Monday.

In all, the two men whom officials described as neo-Nazi skinheads planned to kill 88 people — 14 by beheading, according to documents unsealed in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

Sad.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR GUN EVEN IF THE NRA CRIES FOR YOU WHEN YOU ARE CALLED TO PAY UP.

...but in short, my "in theory" requires, in part, that the resources saved (and I know there are counter arguments here as well) on serial killers, be directed where the rabid pro death penalty folks would never send them.

It remains a part of my thinking however because I equate cash with sweat and blood, laboring and soldiering.

In terms of the dirty little world we live in, I hasten to repeat that I am terrified whenever I view a trial. TERRIFIED.

Jim

But Jim, guns don't kill

But Jim, guns don't kill people -- people kill people. In actuality, both of those statements are misleading, as it is bullets travelling at high velocity that kill people (unless the gun is used as a club).

Along with the curse of having to sit in judgement of fellow citizens who commit crimes against society, comes the "cure" of setting examples and, ostensibly, deterring others from making the same "mistakes."

When it comes to the ultimate penalty, however, there are no mulligans, or do-overs. It seems to me that, unless there is irrefutable, undeniable, absolute, proof that justifies the death penalty, "circumstantial" evidence should not be enough to take a life. If there is even one minute shred of doubt, the possibility of a miscarriage of justice is too great.

;)

It's back to converting folks that THINK they are political conservatives but are really only simple conservatives.

You and I both know what we would do if we came in on someone killing our family members. Conservative folks need to hear that, as well as the longer arguments. That is also a bit of my "in theory".

Signed,

Weasel

There is always the

LOL!

Awesome.

Didn't some one say

An eye for an eye and the whole world is blind. we need to stop the cycle of violence. The U.S. is the only western nation that has the death penalty time for it to go the way of slavery. Besides it only seems to be used on african americans and the poor.

Gun Nuts: Whatever happened to punching someone?

Police Say Teen Shot Over McCain Sign

AP

LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio (Oct. 28) - A teenager was wounded in the arm by a man who said he wanted to stop the boy and another from taking his John McCain yard sign, according to police.

Warren Township police Lt. Don Bishop said 50-year-old Kenneth Rowles told officers he got out a .22-caliber rifle Saturday afternoon to fire warning shots, not hurt anyone. The two shots hit the van the teens were in.

Rowles pleaded not guilty Monday to felonious assault. A preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 4, Election Day.
Kyree Flowers, the 17-year-old passenger in the van, was wounded in the arm and was treated at a hospital, Bishop said.
The victim and his cousin admitted stealing signs at the Rowles home and elsewhere, Bishop said Tuesday. Rowles had the only McCain sign on a street with numerous Barack Obama signs, according to Bishop.

He said there was no evidence the thefts were anything more than teen vandalism. No charges were filed against the boys.

Ok, so you're a McCain backer. It's a free country so fine.

Now some little punk starts screwing with your yard sign. Can you please be a man and simply throw a punch? Please.

Yeah there are better ways.

Yeah you'll probably get in trouble.

Yeah sometimes that would be too dangerous.

BUT FOR @@@@@@@ sake YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR GUN and brandishing it, let alone firing it, is nuts. AND FIRING IT AT THE KIDS!

---

I know I know, I'm not allowed to bitch one damned bit because the NRA will not allow that.

But still...
