Edge of Sports Nation: I am proud to report that I will be speaking on Saturday June 21st in Chicago at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare on a panel called “1968: The Athletes Revolt.“

Speaking along side me will be Dr. John CARLOS from the 1968 Olympic Black Power Salute, and Dave MEGGYESY, former NFL Player who retired in 1969 in protest of the way the league was so intertwined with the Vietnam War and dehumanization of athletes. Meggyesy also wrote perhaps my all time favorite sports biography /Out of Their League. /

We are speaking as part of a weekend conference called Socialism 2008, sponsored by the non-profit Center for Economic Research and Social Change.

Other speakers that weekend include Jeremy SCAHILL, author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army, Camilo MEJIA ,the first U.S. military resister in the Iraq war and author of Road from ar-Ramadi; Dahr JAMAIL, independent journalist and author of Beyond the Green Zone, and many more.

ALSO I am speaking a second time that weekend on my upcoming book A People’s History of Sports in the United States, the DEBUT People’s History of Sports talk in what will be a monster tour this fall.

The conference is remarkable. I’ve attended every year since I was a teenager with over 100 talks, and over 1,000 activists from around the world.

IF YOU REGISTER for all or part of the conference and let me know via email at edgeofsports@gmail.com, you get free signed copies of What’s My Name Fool? and Welcome to the Terrordome, and you will be invited to a special Edge of Sports dinner Saturday night at a nearby steakhouse.

Steak? Sports? Radical Politics? What better way to spend a Saturday summer?

In struggle and sports,
Dave Z
